I thought this deserved it's own thread, if i am wrong please move it! We have all suffered through the Taverez and Seanez games! However I just heard on WEEI (big show) that tito called the young pitchers into his office today and told them that they have the leverage jobs. It will be Hansen (6th), MDC (7th), Timlin (8th), and Paps (9th). He told them they don't need to look over their shoulders, that the job is there's now!

I like how Tito has given definite roles to the people in the pen. No more guessing games over who does what when. And even more it shows his confidence in the young players, something that Tito hasn’t always done in the past. (However I do wonder if Theo had any part in this decision.)

Tito gave his closer role to Jonathan Papelbon, and thrust Wily Mo Pena in CF. I'd say he's done a great job of using his young players.

Van Buren and Delcarmen aren't in the category of blue chip talent. If he wants to use Seanez over Delcarmen, I don't see anything wrong with that.

Thank goodness they have finally realized that Tavarez and Seanez are wastes. Look for one of them to get DFA'd when Foulke returns.

Tavarez is. Seanez isn't.

Seanez misses bats, and has been a product of bad luck. He currently owns a .330 BABIP against him. If that number were to slip down to a .300 area, his ERA would certaintly be less.

Paps would be the obvious exception.

I was referring mostly to his use of Tavarez, and to a lesser degree Seanez, who have been his main go-to guys in high leverage situations.

I would see them doing something with Tavarez when and if Foulke comes back healthy! Seanez has shown some potential---where Tavarez has been nothing but a disaster! It will be a pretty good bullpen if MDC and Hansen can pitch well and we get Foulke back healthy!

This has been verified now,,, I just heard the interview with Tito with him basically saying it's time for them to see what they can do --and they will get that chance!

Here's a link from the Globe's Extra Bases: http://www.boston.com/sports/baseball/redsox/extras/extra_bases/

"I think we're getting to the point where we'd like to keep them here and kind of have them carry some of that responsibility in that bullpen," said Francona. "I just want them to understand that I'm actually okay with it and a little bit excited and they just have to pay attention to detail and show the veterans that they care about winning and as long as they do that this has a chance to work out really well."

Im not sure I liked the defined innings. Its as if we are only expecting our starting pitchers to go 5 innings? Does this mean we will never see Hansen if the game goes past the sixth?

Instead of assigning innings, they should be assgined roles:

Mopup/Long Tavarez

Short Hansen

Rspecialist Seanez

Lspecialist Lopez

SetupB MDC

SetupA Timlin

Closer Papelbon

I like this move a lot, even if it does not pan out in the short term (this month), it will definitely help in the long term, giving these guys much needed big game and big spot experience. I would also still like to see Keith Foulke in a bigger role, maybe 7th inning setup when he comes back to close to 100%, because of the vast amount of money we are paying him to pitch in blowouts.

Before he got hurt, he was out 7th inning bridge to timlin and paps and excelled at that role (when healthy) i can see him doing that again if he comes back healthy!

If the kids succeed in this role I can see the sox moving foulke once he gets healthy

Ya, if someone takes on his contract he could be a good guy to move.

And I highly doubt Foulke is ever "healthy" again

The contract is the problem, and if he's healthy i would rather keep him than trade him while paying a good portion of his contract!

Both the guys on PTI today picked Papelbon over Rivera in a "Who'd you rather have as closer debate". Just FYI, no huge surprise there.

saw that as well....paps is 11 or 12 years younger and so far is having a better start to a season than rivera has ever had.

Kornheiser kept making the best points: .25 ERA, 1 run scored in 35 innings, ect... Although Wilbon then went on to say he would rather have jenks than either of them----nice chicago homer:rolleyes:

how the f*** can Jenks even be in the conversation? The only other guy that can be in the conversation is Ryan

michael wilbon is from chicago thats why

Jenks has outstanding periphial statistics. If his BABIP was flipped with Papelbon's, Jenks' ERA would probably be in the low to mid 1 range.

I understand he's from Chicago but its his job as a journalist to put his favoritism aside. I thought he was a Cubs homer anyway

Reports on Foulke don't sound good. It would be great if he could get healthy. He has ice in his veins when he is healthy.

I have to say, Hansen looked wonderful tonight. I know he gave up two in the ninth, and I think working two innings will be something he will do later on. Right now, I love Hansen for an inning. His fastball is electric. 98 with Papelbon movement.

nice, that's all we need from here to october. our bullpen being worked out and if the batting is doing this for the rest of the summer we will make the playoff.
