Nationals - Red Sox Preview:

The Boston Red Sox look to continue their dominance of the National League when their three-game set against the Washington Nationals continues at Fenway Park on Tuesday.

The Red Sox (40-28) have won four straight games over NL opponents including a weekend sweep at Atlanta, and are 6-1 in interleague games this season. They are outscoring the NL 25-14 during their current winning streak after defeating the Nationals 6-3 in Monday's series opener.

Boston is 8-2 in interleague games at Fenway Park since the start of last season, and is 15-2 in all interleague games since June 12, 2005.

Manny Ramirez hit his 18th homer of the season on Monday, and has hit a home run in each of his last three games at home.

Red Sox third baseman Mike Lowell is 7-for-18 (.389) in his last five games, and is 17-for-47 (.362) in his career against Tuesday's Washington starter Livan Hernandez.

The Nationals (32-40) have lost six of their last eight games, and manager Frank Robinson needs a strong outing from Hernandez (5-7, 5.18 ERA). Washington starters have pitched fewer than 4 1-3 innings in three of the last six games, with Nationals opponents averaging 7.7 runs in those contests.

''If our starting pitching doesn't go deep, we're in trouble,'' Robinson said.

Hernandez is 5-0 with a 2.45 ERA in six interleague starts since June 27, 2004, and is 16-11 with a 4.39 ERA in 33 career interleague games.

While he has been unbeatable in interleague games recently, Hernandez has struggled in his last two starts.

After winning four straight starts from May 21-June 5, the right-hander has lost his last two. He gave up six runs and eight hits while throwing a season-high 138 pitches in 6 2-3 innings in an 8-1 loss to Colorado on Thursday.

''Baseball is like that. You've got to understand you're not going to be perfect every day,'' Hernandez said.

Hernandez allowed six runs and eight hits in 6 1-3 innings in a 7-1 loss in his only career game against Boston, on July 20, 1999 when he played for Florida.

The Red Sox will counter with knuckleballer Tim Wakefield , who looks for his first win since throwing eight shutout innings against Tampa Bay on May 28.

Wakefield (4-8, 3.97) is 0-2 with a 3.60 ERA in his last three starts, and allowed four runs and eight hits in six innings of a 5-3 loss to Minnesota on Thursday.

''It just wasn't our night,'' said Wakefield, who suffered his first loss at the Metrodome since April 26, 1999 - a span of five starts.

The knuckleballer has never faced Washington in his 14-year career, and he is 5-12 with a 5.19 ERA in 23 interleague starts.

Wakefield is 2-6 with a 5.25 ERA in 12 home interleague starts, and the Red Sox are just 2-10 in those games.

Nationals left fielder Alfonso Soriano is batting just .158 (3-for-19) in his last five games, but is 10-for-33 (.303) with four homers and seven RBIs in his career against Wakefield.

Time to put up some runs for Wake. GO SOX!

i know that Cesar Crespo is a very much maligned player around here, and I agree, but my favorite bad player to make fun of is Robert Fick, absolutely useless

how come Gonzo gets another day off?

and by the way, after Guillen, that Nats lineup is awful

My thoughts exactly! Gonzo has been hitting the ball better lately than ever before in boston---why give him so many nights off in a row? Let's hope he's not hurt!
