Theo on the trade...

Red Sox vice president and general manager Theo Epstein spoke about the trade this afternoon.

“We called the White Sox trying to acquire Lopez,” said Epstein. “We sent a scout out to see him and got an excellent scouting report. We had a bit of redundancy with right-handed relievers. [Riske] was behind other guys in similar role, so we felt he was expendable to get a lefty who we think could help us now.

“By clearing up the logjam [of righthanded relievers], it will help us get a look at some younger guys we think can pitch in the big leagues.”

On building a bullpen: “It’s not easy, and it’s not something we’ve been particularly good at lately,” Epstein said. “I couldn’t’ believe we were fourth in bullpen ERA, and had the best run differential from the seventh inning on heading into this [Twins] series. [That’s because] Papelbon has done an amazing job as well as Mike Timlin when healthy. Behind him, we’re looking for someone to step up. We really need someone to assert themselves to provide more depth. It’s been a challenge for Tito.”

Is Lopez another lefty specialist? “After we traded him during spring training [in ‘03], he had good start with Colorado,” said Epstein. “Then he struggled and moved to Arizona. He’s been in Triple-A since, but he put things together last year. Took a look at him to see if his stuff had changed and scouting report showed his stuff was better. His velocity is 85-90, 88 average with a plus sinker and above average slider, changeup, and cutter. [Lately] he’s been much more effective against righthanders. Tito will look to him to get lefties out [primarily], but he’s not a guy you always have to yank out of there after a third of an inning.”

“The way our pen has evolved, there was certainly a role for somebody like that right now, somebody with options,” said Epstein. “There’s some flexiblility there. In an ideal world, you’d have an 11-man staff that can get everybody out. With a lot of the attrition we’ve had, we’re just looking to get people out… He’s just below a sidearm, he’s not a submarine pitcher.”

Any news on Clement? “Clement is back in Boston to be examined later this afternoon,” Epstein said.

Are the Red Sox in the market for starting pitching? “Absolutely we need help for the starting staff,” said Epstein. “We’re looking both internal and external. The way things have evolved with Clement’s injury, Wells, DiNardo’s injury, moving Papelbon to the bullpen. We’re preparing internal options but we’re also exploring outside the organization.”

hopefully this means MDC and Hansen get more of an opportunity

i think the reason why his career ERA is 6.09 is because he was used against righties as well as lefties in Colorado/Arizona. He has good stats against Lefties in his career but has really struggled against righties. All we need him to do is get Lefties out.

Certainly I hope Delcarmen gets more of a chance to pitch full innings. As for Craig Hansen I would hope he stays in AAA until August and come up around the same time Jonathan Papelbon did last year. That will give him the most time to get himself situated and be ready to really help us down the stretch. This is the best way for him to be successful because teams will have a hard time getting used to his stuff.

Real interesting info on the starting pitching but thats obvious we need help. At the moment Jon Lester is taking David Wells spot and if he performs I think he could stay in the rotation. If David Wells comes back and Lester is hot.....goodbye Matt Clement.

Interesting that it was the Red Sox who asked the White Sox for Lopez. I thought it would have been the other way around, the White Sox asking for Riske

Tavarez and Seanez probably couldn't be dealt for a 29 year old A ball pitcher.

Gammo was just on WEEI and said that the WS actually wanted Seanez and not Riske, but settled for Riske!

I heard that too. The Red Sox didn’t want to trade Seanez because they feel he can turn it around and still be an important part of the pen this year.

:thumbdown Riske never got an oppurtunity here, Seanez has and he for the most part has sucked

completely agreed, Riske was starting to come on, from injury

Seanez just sucks

But we needed a lefty and if Riske was the price, i dont think it was a bad move, it could turn out to be brilliant. I think Theo knows more on this guy, formerly in our system, than the White Sox do

I still dont get it. Why is Seanez bashed so bad? This year he has been better than everyone else not named Papelbon or Timlin from the pen. We have no proof that MDC or Hansen are better at this point than Seanez because both have been shaky in their limited appearances, plus Hansen is having a hard time not walking the world in AAA. We are competing for a division title here, and while both have tremendous potential, Im not so sure now is the best time to see what they have. We are not the KC Royals, or the Detroit Tigers a few years back parading our young arms to the mound every night hoping they can learn on the fly. Hansen is not even a year removed from college. There are tremendous expectations on his shoulders and I would hate to see what it would do to his psyche if he were to fail. Let the kids grow up before we stick them in the middle of a division title race.....lets not forget...we were leading this thing a few days ago....and thats scary as bad has it has been for this team lately.

Things can only get better, and all along ive had faith in Seanez, and obviously someone else does high in the RedSox front Office if they want to keep him over Riske.

good point.

I ususally go on the theory that the F.O.knows more than I'll ever know and makes moves based on information that I am not privvy to (i.e. scouting reports, inside info regarding injuries or struggles, personal issues, overall organizational goals, salary and contract issues).

So if they're keeping Rudy instead of Riske then there must be a damn good reason and I'll refrain from second guessing.

Of course the Arroyo trade would be a case where I second-guessed immediately, just because a relatively young innings-eater at Arroyo's salary seem too damn valuable to trade for unproven talent...but that's an entirely different issue.

i went 6 days without mentioning arroyos name publically.

of course i still wake up screaming his name every other night but that will pass if i keep taking these little blue pills that make me sleepy
