I like Bard at 28, if he can get his breaking ball more consistent he should make another great addition to our young pitching core in the minors an already projects as a #1 or #2

I heard he isn't that far off from Andrew Miller. The two of them were supposed to fight each other for the top spot. Clearly he has the stuff to be the top pitcher in the draft....if we can get his consistancy to come around and help him develop another couple pitches....he could be fantastic.

when i saw our 1st draft pick the first name that came to mind was Lasting Milledge ....any cahnce he may turn out to be like Miledge

im not sure that is the first name that would come to my mind. He is a corner outfield prospect. I'm thinking about Alex Rios, the kid making a splash with the Jays right now

have u ever heard of him?

no, i dont follow college baseball to much. But i like how we've taking a corner OF, 3B, 1b, and C, which were are main needs outside of P

Last 5 picks:

Bryson Cox--RHP--Rice

has a good breaking ball and hits mid-to high 80's with his fastball.

Jonathan Still--C/1B--NC ST.

not a great fielder and probably will be a 1b/DH in the pros, pretty good power hitter.

Dustin Richardson--LHP--TX Tech

Tall lefty, 14th in the country in K's this year, has been used as a reliever and starter

Zachary Daeges--3B--Creighton

Tall, big, bats LH, also has played LF, big swing, powerful, needs to control his swing a little bit but has good power potential

Kristopher Negron--SS--Jr at Cosumnes Community College

dont know much about him, 6'0 180 lbs

God I hate the Pirates. We have absolutely no bats in the bigs, or in our farm system, and McClatchy goes out and drafts a handfull of pitchers. NEWSFLASH: The Pirates have 7 guys who can start in the majors and they're all under 26 ... the last thing we need is more pitching.

I don't know why I expected anything great out of this draft for the Pirates. In 20 years the 2 best players we've drafted in the first round are Kendall and Benson ... the majority of the rest never even saw the bigs ... some never even saw AAA.

Sox select Matt Laporta in the 14th round.

I remember at the begining of the season he was a top draft pick. THIS IS A GREAT PICK UP as this kid can just lights out hit the ball. Ive seen him be compared to Mark Teixara,

He led all of college baseball in HR last year, and this year didn't play much due to an oblique strain.

A real good sleeper pick.

Ryan Kalish, the guy they got 283 overall has been compared to Trot Nixon.

Ive really liked what the Sox have done this year in the draft so far

Q: J.P. from IL asks:

So, what's the deal with LaPorta today? Give us a rundown, please.

A: John Manuel: The quick answer is, he's got a bad body, no true position and he hasn't hit, and that's a bad mix when you put a huge price tag out there. One scout I talked to comped LaPorta to . . . Matt LeCroy. Yikes. That's fine, but it's not several million dollars worth of ballplayer.

the sox really seem to be going after the power guys.

they just took Tyler Weeden, a HS catcher whos got great power potential.

More info on our 2 first rounders...

Jason Place of Wren HS, Piedmont, S.C. SC

Place is one of the best high school players to come out of South Carolina in several years. Scouts see him as a five-tool, blue-collar player with a great body who approaches the game in an aggressive and physical manner. Place has above-average speed that he uses well in the outfield and on the basepaths. His raw power rates as a 70 on the 20-80 scouting scale and is capable of producing both iron shots and high, majestic blasts over the fence. He also has plenty of arm strength to play right field, as evidenced by a 90-92 mph fastball he has shown on the mound. More than one scout compared Place to Braves outfielder Jeff Francoeur, particularly with his aggressiveness at the plate and his power potential. A dead pull hitter, Place could pile up high strikeout totals early in his career. He also has battled a series of nagging injuries, particularly with pulled hamstrings, though a recent emphasis on flexibility training has led to improvements.

Daniel Bard rhp North Carolina NC

Bard has not thrown with the same consistency of teammate Andrew Miller, but the righthander should give the Tar Heels two first-round picks. Bard limited opponents to a .220 average in his first 72 innings this spring while winning six of his first nine decisions. According to UNC head coach Mike Fox, Bard had his best start as a collegian on April 23 by tossing a four-hit shutout versus N.C. State. That performance followed a strong effort in the Cape Cod League, when he led the circuit in strikeouts and ranked as the second-best prospect, behind only Miller. Bard was deemed one of the premier high school pitchers in the 2003 draft before falling to the Yankees in the 20th round due to signability concerns. He proceeded to earn ACC freshman of the year honors in 2004 prior to an uneven season as a sophomore. Bard's fastball resides in the low 90s and touches 94 after hitting 98 earlier in his college career. His curveball is just as effective, featuring a sharp bite and a late break. Scouts also love his workhorse mentality and durable body. He can struggle with the command of his fastball, and has worked on becoming more pitch-efficient.

Great pick, if they get the kid signed. He's represented by Boras and only slipped for signability reasons.

Sox got Lars Anderson too in the 18th round. Getting Laporta and Anderson and some other solid HS picks along with the first 4-5 picks make this a very good draft.

This s*** is moving too quickly for me to wrap my mind around it. I will have to digest this whole draft while I watch the game, and overnight, and tomorrow, and for the rest of the year, and the offseason, and for the years and years that I will likely be speculating about all of these new names. It's like Christmas!

In any case, here is an article I found on Jason Place. Of course, he's like the best high school player ever from his school, and is the best player that anyone there has seen, yada yada. This is, of course, as it should be for someone being taken out of HS in the 1st round by the red sox. I hope this guy a good, scrappy, fleet footed outfielder. He hit over

.500 last year, with only 4 HR.

Anderson's another great pick. Plays good defense at first and despite his wierd stance has good power potential with good plate dicsipline

I know all of this should go on a Jason Place page, but I'm too engrosed in the topic here to leave. If someone wants to move it they can go ahead, otherwise, I'll post here.
