I havent really been keeping up with the games the last few days, but I did see that Timlin was placed on the DL with shoulder stiffness. I was just wondering what they are calling it in the boston media. Shoulder stiffness could be anything from dead arm which will get better in a few days, to tendonitis that is hiding a tear. Just wanted to know what they are calling it on the sox networks.

Also, his injury is going to really hurt. Paps is on pace for 88IP in his first yr as a closer since college. That is a lot of work to put on a young arm. Timlin was on pace for 68IP, which isnt bad for a reliever. BUT, when you factor in that every other boston reliever has been a liability, then you have some problems. Over the first 2 months of the season, when your pitchers have handed a lead to your pen after the 7th inning, you havent lost that lead. That is equal parts timlin as it is Paps. Now, you wont have the first half of that combination. That means more innings for Foulke, Tavares and RUDY!!!! in crunch time. That can never be good....

I think Jonathan Papelbon can easily withstand 88 IP. He never had fatigue issues in the minors or college and has pitched plenty of innings in the past. We wanted him to pitch 200 innings.

Keith Foulke will really need to step up the next couple weeks. I'm happy the Red Sox brought up Manny Delcarmen...get the kid some more innings in the show.

there is a MAJOR difference between putting in 200 innings as a starter and 90 innings as a reliever, MAJOR difference. Also, that is a huge burden to put on a guy who has just been converted to a full time, high use BP role. You are asking a lot out of that arm....

I think they are saying it's "dead arm"...although i have heard a few different things. He should be fine after his DL stint. Foulke can keep it together as long as he keeps his head in the game and there is no reason to believe that paps will have a problem---let's just not overuse him!

I echo that sentiment.

From today's Boston Globe"

"Timlin attempted to throw before yesterday's game, but when that did not go well he had an MRI and was placed on the DL. Timlin said the MRI showed `'no structural damage. Everything's very sound. The doctors are amazed that I'm actually 40 years old.'"

I’m guessing that part of his “dead arm” could possibly be attributed to playing in the WBC without having spring training to warm into the season. (Note: In part I also blame the WBC for Varitek’s offensive struggles this season.)

But in a weird way I think it’s good that the injury happened now and the Sox are proactive in resting him now and not letting him just play through it. I’d rather see him rested and not used now, late in May, so his arm will be fresh for the late summer/early fall months. He’s an extremely important part of the back end of the bullpen.

Yea thats what I guessed, some media people were saying timlin playing in the wbc didn't give him the proper time to train and he is now out of whack with the arm. he will be back in full force soon.

dead arm. Thanks guys. He'll be back either right after or very soon after the DL stint. His effectiveness will be a question that will wait for answering....

I agree that the WBC probably threw him off (as well as tek). I am sure he will take time to get it right and then be back and ready to go. I believe his effectivness will be fine, but may take a few "non-pressure" innings to get him feeling right again. Timlin has been on this schedule for a long time (he is 40) so the WBC threw his body off a little--fear not he'll be back!

excuses excuses. Jeter and ARod were in the WBC and they are doing well...

They are not pitchers. If you look around the major, many of the WBC pitchers have experienced arm troubles or unusual ineffectiveness.
