Schilling, Red Sox encounter Wang in series opener vs. Yanks

NY Yankees (24-18) at Boston (25-16) 7:05 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) -- While Curt Schilling's turn in the rotation technically came up on Sunday, the Boston Red Sox opted to hold him one more day, which just happens to put him on the mound Monday in the opener of a three-game series against the New York Yankees.

The Red Sox certainly could have used Schilling on Sunday as they dropped a 10-5 decision to Philadelphia. Lenny DiNardo and Abe Alvarez were rocked for four runs apiece.

However, Schilling (6-2, 4.17 ERA) appears to be the right man to get the team back on track with a 3-0 record and 2.14 ERA in three home starts this season.

The hefty righthander's last start came in Baltimore on Tuesday, a contest in which he yielded five runs in 5 2/3 innings but still got the victory in a 6-5 triumph. His previous outing came against the Yankees on May 10, when he was reached for six runs in five frames of a 7-3 defeat.

Chien-Ming Wang (4-1, 3.79) takes the mound for New York as he looks to continue his best stretch of the season. The Taiwanese righthander has gone 3-0 with a 2.05 ERA in his last three outings after winning just once in his first six starts.

Wang faced Boston on May 1, yielding three runs and walking a season-high four in five innings.

The Yankees have lost three of their last four games following Sunday's 4-3 setback to the New York Mets in which they went 2-for-16 with runners in scoring position.

And also...some more mojo pictures or good luck pictures from ORS would be useful :D

Animal Mother got rained out the last time they came to Fenway.

Animal Mother hates the rain.

Animal Mother blames the Yankees for the rain.

The Yankees are weak, and Animal Mother smells blood in the water.

Some interesting tidbits heading into tonight’s Red Sox-Yankees contest, courtesy of the Red Sox daily pregame notes:

The Red Sox and Yankees have met 75 times (regular season and postseason combined) since 2003, with Boston owning a 39-36 edge. Here’s the breakdown, courtesy of the Red Sox:

RED SOX YANKEES
39-36 RECORD 36-39
.282 BATTING AVERAGE .254
433 RUNS SCORED 370
115 HOME RUNS 88
.468 SLUGGING PERCENTAGE .416
.354 ON-BASE PERCENTAGE .334
.4.56 TEAM ERA 5.32

The Red Sox have won 10 of their last 14 games and is 11-5 in May (a .688 winning percentage), the third-best mark in the majors for the month. Overall, the Sox (25-16) have their best record through 41 games since 2003.

The Red Sox have the fewest number of errors in the majors (14, four fewer than any other team) and lead all teams with a .990 fielding percentage. According to the Red Sox, this marks the fewest errors the team has made through 41 games played since research was first available back in 1960.

Curt Schilling is 2-1 with a 7.13 ERA in three starts in May after going 4-1 with a 2.88 ERA in six starts in April. Schilling allowed three home runs last Tuesday for the second start in a row, the first time in his career he has allowed three home runs in consecutive starts.

Schilling picked up his 198th career win last Tuesday in Baltimore and is just two shy of becoming the 104th pitcher in major league history to reach 200 career wins.

Jonathan Papelbon earned his major league leading 15th save on Friday and is the first Red Sox closer with at least 15 saves through May 21 since Tom Gordon had 17 in 1998.

Papelbon’s 0.40 ERA is best among all major league pitchers

(15 or more innings pitched). Mike Timlin ranks fourth in that category at 0.96.

Mike Lowell has homered in four of his last eight games and leads the majors with 20 doubles and is tied with Alex Rios and Matt Holliday for second with 27 extra base hits, one behind Albert Pujols, the MLB leader.

Tonight's Red Sox lineup as reported on Boston sports radio WEEI:

1. Kevin Youkilis, 1B

2. Mark Loretta, 2B

3. David Ortiz, DH

4. Manny Ramirez, LF

5. Trot Nixon, RF

6. Jason Varitek, C

7. Mike Lowell, 3B

8. Wily Mo Pena, CF

In the SoSH game thread, one poster said Mike and the Mad Dog said this lineup:

Damon - DH

Jeter - SS

Giambi - 1B

ARod - 3B

Posada - C

Cano - 2B

Williams - CF (yup - CF)

Long - LF (that would be Terence Long)

Cabrera - RF

So I guess Long has been activated, and Posada will start...

now all the sox hitters have to do is hit it to CF/RF and they should be fine

officially from boston.com

The Yankees took their time posting their lineup for tonight’s game, announcing it just past 4:30. The Globe's Amalie Bejamin suggested the theory that they were waiting as long as they could hold to see if recently signed Terrence Long could make it to Boston in time.

Long is in the lineup in left field and batting eight. Johnny Damon will bat leadoff, but as the designated hitter. Bernie Williams will instead play center.

1. Damon, DH (why is he DH'ing, so no one throws stuff at him in CF)

2. Derek Jeter, SS

3. Jason Giambi, 1B

4. Alex Rodriguez, 3B

5. Jorge Posada, C

6. Robinson Cano, 2B

7. Williams, CF

8. Long, LF (only good OF they have in the game tonight)

9. Melky Cabrera, RF

Already hyper up to watch this one just like I am with any Red Sox/Yankees game. Going to be a good one to watch. Schilling on the mound and he usually pitches well against the Yankees so let's hope he continues to do so tonight. Only 2 hours left until this one starts and I can't wait.

Wily Mo Pena is scratched after hurting his wrist in BP and Willie Harris will bat 8th and start in Centerfield
