I gave a little pre-1966 credit for some pitchers, but not when 1966 was his only year in the last 40 years.

Oh, I see. I rounded to include anyone's whole career if they had pitched in the last 40 years.

I think Drysdale was underrated throughout his career because he was overshadowed by Koufax. I agree with ORS's list, I'd put Drysdale from 15-11.

i agree with this almost exactly, but i have never even heard of Bert Blyleven

and id switch Pedro and Maddux

You never heard of Bert Blyleven? Burt was the man!

Come on. Roger Clemens with all those Cy Young awards and whatnot. And the 20-strikeout games? Only one other guy in the history of the game has ever done it even once. There is no comparison and nothing to debate

i will never be a roger guy as ive seen him fold under pressure too many times to put him on top

if i needed someone to hold a 6 run lead in the 1st inning in may i suppose he'd be the man...

whats his record against petey in the big games?

whats his record against dave stewart for that matter...

fergie jenkins won 20games 7out of 8 years for a sucky cubs team and threw well over 300 innings 5 out 6 years...

267 complete games he pitched

clem has pitched 118,4 in the last 6 years

its not really an indictment against clemens as it is a reminder that men can throw 300 innings and 25 complete games if you give them the chance

fergie pitched 18 years

some of the 60s pitchers have some gaudy ass #s

wow ryan only got 3 votes?
Ryan had the greatest arm of any pitcher. There is no disputing that, and he is the Strikeout king, but he is not and was not the greatest pitcher. He walked too many guys.

The greatest goes hands down to Pedro. I watched him and Clemens for many years, and that was my opinion backed up with no stats. The stats however bear it out. Take a look at every stat that is important for a pitcher. Look at Pedro's rank on the all-time list for the following stats:

1. Winning %

2. Lg. Adj. ERA

3. Hits/9 innings

4. Hits + walks/9 innings

5. k's/9inings

6. strikeout to walks ratio

After digesting his rank in those all-time categories, tell me who else compares. The answer is clearly that he is incomparable.

Posted
Clemens has done it for 20+ years. Also, last yrs stats by Clemens trumped Petey's and Clemens is 9 yr older than Petey...

And Clemens is a proven big game pitcher.

Oh, wait, I meant big game choker.

this is very similar to saying ARod is the best all-around bb player in history...Roger is a number hanger. WHen the chips are down, there are a bunch of pitchers I'd rather have:

Pedro

Bob Gibson

Steve Carlton

even Smoltz

Roger may have the best all-around resume in terms of numbers and longevity, but his performances in big games or versus top-notch pitchers of his era (i.e. Dave Stewart) will always fall short in my mind.

roger clemens?

as long as it dont matter raja is the man you want out there

the minute it matters??

warm up the bullpen becuase you can count on something like

the trick hammy

the trick groin

the inflammed shoulder or the fragile psyche to break down

in a perfect world nobody steps up and signs him this summer but

judging by nys current pitching woes if randy johnson gets 16,000,000.00 then raja is worth 50,000,000.00.....opening bids are at 5M per month

great point on smoltz too

that man was,is,can still be one...... of the best big game pitchers ever

better than maddox,thats for sure

the 4 hossman from atlanta

avery smoltz tommy glavine and maddox....and only 1 world series?

that astounds me...pitching and 'D' win titles, no?

how'd they only win one? funny game sometimes.

Crunch...its getting close to that time of year...American Legion BB will be starting after the high school season.

where kids play for the love of the game.

"Catfish" played for some very good teams, so his win total was probably helped a lot by good offenses and bullpens. Don't get me wrong, he was a very good pitcher, but he doesn't make the list. Drysdale probably gets cut from this list too. As well as Vida and Bret. I think my top-10 of the last 40-45 years would be like this (no-order):

Pedro, Roger, Sandy, Maddux, Seaver, Gooden, Johnson, Gibson, Carlton, & Marichal

Just missing the list: Tiant, Palmer, Blyleven, Hunter, Saberhagen, Ryan

One Red Seat was the only one who mentioned Jim Palmer in his career 19 years he won 20 games 9 times and ended with a 2.86 lifetime ERA.

Roger has played 22 years and has won 20 games 6 times and up to this point has a 3.12 ERA.

Pedro has played 14 years and won 20 games twice with a 2.72 ERA.

Why didn't Palmer make the cut..........just wondering?

Ok if we're talking about one game I take Pedro even with Roger's 20 K games. Let's take a look at Roger's two 20 K games and then look at Pedro's best game ever.

First one against the Mariners in 1986, If you look at that Mariners team they lived at the bottom of the standings all year and turned out to be one of the worst teams in the history of the game as far as strike outs go.

The second one against Detroit also a meaningless game against a bottom of the standings team.

Now lets look at Pedro's best single game performance, he went into Yankee Stadium: one of the most hostile environments to play in, in September during a pennant race: one of the biggest games of the year. He struck out 17 and gave up one hit. Probabaly one of the most dominant pitching performances in baseball history. He got a standing ovation in Yankee Stadium by Yankee fans, probabaly the only time that's ever happened to a Red Sox player.

If it's one game there's no question I take Pedro, anything beyond that I take Clemens.

palmer was a crafty prick in his own right, certainly a valid argument to make that top 10.

unreal over hand curve at 3 different speeds and played with one of the all time great dp combos in grich and belanger, all world brooks robinson at 3rd and the boog at 1st

elrod hendrix al bumbry paul fukin blair......

got i hated that team

mike cuellar was the 2 forever on that staff and in 1970 they had 4 20game winners.

steve mcnally and pat dobson rounded out that staff that went to 3 straight w/series

jimma

the milford legion coach also coaches my daughters softball team

we played all 4 sports together and now its our daughters

not sons, who will be doing the same.

he played at ga southern and with the Guardians farm thru like 90....

he went broke trying to be a pro and now hes a school teacher and he owns a baseball school and is doing great....

its good to see someone actually make money teaching the game to kids the way it should be played

he had the italian disease

5'6 250? and he was a catcher.....

benched 300 squatted 6 and cried screamed and went off like a raging lunatic if he whiffed or we lost a game...

and now we coach our 8 year old daughters...

it sucks getting old

Roger Clemens the guy is over 40 and he's still pitching amazing and winning another Cy Young. How many guys do that when they are 40 +.

our legion coach was mellow. hardly knew he was there, he let us play much more than our HS coach. It was nice to be able to swing at a first pitch in Legion, and you saw some kids who were "small-balling" it in HS actually get to show what they could do if the reigns were loosened.

HS? Different story. Winningest coach in CT HS history, and why? Extremely talented teams that bunted and stole and ran fake bunts and ran fake steals, and ran suicide squeezes and this and that and took the first pitch and took on 1-0 and 2-0 and 3-1.

Small ball at its best, but not always a fun way to play...when you know you can rip a kid and you're team is already up by 10 or so and you are bunting or taking? Frustrating.

Miss a sign? he'd scream bloody murder and ask if you took stupid pills and say get off the field. saw more than one kid quit DURING a game, one stripping off the team jersey, throwing it at him and walking slowly across the field back to the school.

Threw our starting 3B off the team the night before a quarterfinal game in the state tourney for missing Sunday 9:00 am practice the day after the prom...poor kid was told by a captain that a bunch of kids weren't going and he didn't need to either...then this kid was the only one not to show.

The result? His replacement(s) booted one under the stands for a run or two, threw one over the 1B's head into the parking lot for another run, and couldn't hit to save their collective lives.

Yes, I was very bitter after that game.

I really don't like to look at W/L when judging pitchers. There are so many things that contribute to a pitcher's record that the pitcher has nothing to do with. Run support, defense behind him, bullpen support. Palmer was on a very good O's team that was above average in all of those categories. Don't get me wrong, he's a great pitcher and it's a valid argument to try and include him on that list.

mhs's coach retired last year and now coaches the girls softball team

unreal records of achievement

his replacement?

26 yr assistant coach who went on the state semis last year without a .350 hitter

he's also the basketball coach who has the all italian team competing with the worcester schools and has now won 20 games,22 years in a row....

walks, patience, walk some more, get to 3rd from 1st at all costs with less than 2 out

no excuses outside the obvious

miss a sign?

sit down

i think the days of multi sport athletes are getting rarer and rarer due to the time now being spent by each coach on each sport

football coaches want their kids on the field for capts practice in july

god forbid youre playing legion ball??

mhs qb also developed into a great pitcher in the last 2 months

he beat leominster high twice in the last 2 weeks,he'll be expected to play legion ball once the season ends however.....the football coach is expecting him to run the captains practices come 7-15....

dilema??

it shouldnt be but it will....

the intown ******** is extreme with each coach pushing his own agenda
