Due to the extensive rainouts of the Red Sox/Rangers series, the Rangers will be able to start Kevin Millwood against Mike Mussina. The Yankees will be looking to halt their losing streak at one, while the Rangers will look to run it to two. The Rangers pulled a Ned Betty against the Yankees in Texas, as they were easily swept by the Yankees.

MLB.com Game Preview

In his office at Fenway Park on Sunday, manager Buck Showalter found reason to celebrate.

"We swept the Red Sox and didn't give up a run," Showalter said.

Rangers pitchers only threw five innings. That was in Friday night's rained-shortened 6-0 victory over the Red Sox. The next two games were rained out, and so now the Rangers' big road trip heads to New York for four games against the Yankees in the Bronx.

Kevin Millwood, who has never beaten the Yankees, starts on Monday against Mike Mussina. But the weather remains a concern as showers are forecast for the New York area on Monday.

Between the regular season and the playoffs, the Rangers have lost 46 out of their last 66 games at Yankee Stadium going back to the start of the 1994 season.

Rangers knuckleballer Charlie Hough was 6-3 with a 2.88 ERA in his career at Yankee Stadium, but other former Texas pitchers weren't so fortunate.

While they were with the Rangers, Kenny Rogers was 2-5 with a 7.83 ERA in the Bronx, and Bobby Witt was 1-7 with an 8.63 ERA.

Pitching matchup

TEX: RHP Kevin Millwood (3-3, 5.13 ERA)

Millwood allowed nine runs in 1 1/3 innings in a 15-5 loss to the Twins on Monday. He is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three road starts this season. Millwood is 0-3 with a 5.92 ERA in four regular-season starts against the Yankees in his career. He also lost to them in Game 2 of the 1999 World Series while pitching for the Atlanta Braves

NYY: RHP Mike Mussina (6-1, 2.56 ERA)

Mussina beat the Rangers on May 5 in Arlington, holding them to two runs in seven innings. He is now 14-12 with a 3.85 ERA in 31 career starts against the Rangers in his career. He is 5-0 with a 2.18 ERA in his last five starts and entered play Sunday second in the American League in ERA. Opponents are batting .220 off him, the fifth-lowest mark in the league.

Player to watch

Yankees first baseman Jason Giambi is 4-for-6 with two home runs in his career off of Millwood. Giambi also enters this series with 31 career home runs in 111 games and 389 career at-bats against the Rangers.

That's the third most by an active player. Troy Glaus has 33 home runs against the Rangers and Tim Salmon has 32. The all-time leader remains Reggie Jackson with 43, followed by Jose Canseco (40), George Brett (34) and Harold Baines, who also has 33. Giambi is tied with Mark McGwire with 31 against the Rangers.

This is a pathetic thread. Yanks having some problems with run production with Matsui and Sheff out.
You aint kidding. Mussina's great game looks like it will be wasted...

frsutrating game, without sheff and matsui, this lineup is weak. Damon's shoulder is bugging him again and Giambi was pulled from the lineup in the 8th with a tie game. Our offense is dropping like flies....

I knew it would just be a matter of time that theyd start to miss the 30 HR/100 RBI bats from Sheffield & Matsui. The trio of Bernie/Bubba/Melky is not the answer to rotate and George knows it. A trade will come soon if they keep up like this. Bubba I do admit can flash the leather, but his hitting is best served as a 4th outfielder

millwood won the al era title last year

hes solid, not great but very solid,he dont hurt himself.

mussina pitched good again as well

2 runs wont beat texas

the yanks losing matsui and sheff at the same time makes the offense rather tame despite having the reigning mvp,the comeback player of the year, the 54M dollar cf who now resembles the 1 armed killer from THE FUGITIVE and the best offensive catcher in the game..isnt cano hitting over .300 too?

anyways

the last thing that the yankees need right now is gary sheffield discovering that johnny damon makes more money than he does....

is this a contract year for sheff??

boy this could get fun
