How many games will Bernie be suspended for the incident on 5/9/06?

Delmon young was suspended for throwing the bat at the ump, and that helmet was definately in the vicinity of the man in blue. Whats the Verdict?

After his third strikeout, he tossed his bat....and as the ump was ejecting him he tossed his helmet simutaneously in the umpires direction. It landed at his feet.

What happened, exactly? I'm forced to watch games through ESPN.com's gamecast.

He got called out on strikes looking....didn't like the call...said some stuff...started to walk back to the dugout....threw his helmet in the vicinity of the umpire and then got tossed. It came close to hitting him.

BTW...im not saying he should get suspended either, I just have a feeling he will. It was very uncharacteristic of him, he is generally a professional.

He should get suspended for a while. He dropped his bat after the strikeout (which may have got im tossed) then as he was walking away he tossed his helmet at the ump. Now the ump was walking when he did it and it skidded by the ump (right where he had just been). If the ump hadn't have been moving it would have hit him in the shins.

Very uncharacterisitc of bernie, but if they don't suspend him it sends an awful message!

Thanks for those that clarified what happened for me.

I just saw it on ESPN Motion and frankly, I don't think it's anything that's worth a suspension. I'm sure there's a precedent and that he'll get a suspenion, but I don't think what he did was all that bad.

Bernie is really embarassing himself as a ballplayer. If he had been smart he would have went into retirement last year. There is no reason for him to come back. He was a good ballplayer and shouldn't be hanging on like this.

... He was not tossed until after the helmet got thrown. I don't think he meant to hit the umpire, I rather think he meant to throw it towards home plate with his bat. Once the umpire saw that he actually tossed the helmet he got tossed. What I'm saying is he didn't "toss" his bat, or get thrown out for it. He dropped the bat at home plate.

Whatever, he'll probably get 1 game. Even though I don't think he should get anything.

He's really not doing that bad with the stick. He's hitting better than 2/3rds of the Pirates roster.

I'd vote between 1-5 games. Bernie was mad and had no intent on hitting the umpire. It deserves a suspension, but no more than 5 games in my mind. And yes, I believe that is right YanksHater213. I will refrain from making a comment about Melky, though, because he looked decent at the plate last night.

He shouldn't get anything in my opinion. His back was turned when he threw the helmet so Bernie had no idea where the ump was. I don't think he was trying to throw it at the ump he was just frustrated with his team and individual performance.

You're entirely correct. What was the intent ? There was none. I'll make an analogy, you can argue with an umpire, to a point, exceed that point swear, argue strikes, etc. tyou will get ejected. However, physically make contact and you will most certainly face a suspention. Bernie Williams has been a class act ( his skills may have eroded ) his entire career not some mental case with a long history He should not receive any suspention. Infact, if I bumped into him on the Cape, I'd buy him a beer, just for all the great baseball moments he's provided.

How awesome. Does this mean Melky will get to play for however long hes suspended?

probably not, RF was going to be Melkys anyways untill Sheffs back, an Bernie gets DH, if hes suspended, they'll just put Cairo at 1B and make Giambi DH(if their smart)...or they could DH Cairo or whatever, I expected Melky to be playing for a while anyways.

On the play, watching it, and based on the angle they gave, it looked like it was going to hit him as soon as he released it, but then you can notice it wasn't. I don't think it deserves one becasue, and in reference to Delmon Young, Young threw a metal baseball bat going like 50mph at the umps chest. Bernie tossed a plastic hemet at like 2 mph near the feet of the ump, and I doubt he had any intent, but was just more frustrated(like the above 2 posts state)

it appeared as though the helmet going towards the ump was unintentional, however it was still in his direction, and in light of the delmon young thing a very small suspension will probably be warranted

Come on now, Mr. Baseball History buff. They don't use metal bats at any level of professional ball. From the DSL, VSL, and different rookie leagues (GCL, AZL) here all the way up to MLB it's 100% wooden bats.

People argue all the time, why woud he be suspended for that? Throwing s*** is what you get suspended for.

EDIT: Well, after reading Optimist's post, I guess that was the case. How severe was his arguing that it made that worse than throwing his helmet?

I do remember him getting right in the Ump's face after he got tossed out. They were practically nose to nose. There might have been a slight bump which is why he got the 2 games.

Sheff was pretty mad at the ump during the incident in question; I remember, it was at a key point in the game that Giambi won versus the Mets.

He just didn't like the call, so he threw down his helmet...not near or at anyone...but then he got real close to the ump, thats why i think he got suspended
