Wells may be headed to DL

David Wells is expected to miss his next start on Monday and could be headed back to the 15-day disabled list.

The 42-year-old left-hander, who was pounded for seven runs on 10 hits in only four innings in Wednesday’s 8-4 loss to the Toronto Blue Jays, is continuing to experience problems with his right knee and met with the Red Sox’ medical staff following last night’s 2-1 win over the Seattle Mariners. No final determination was made but indications point to him landing on the DL to undergo further treatment on the knee, which required arthroscopic surgery last October.cw-2

Like Keith Foulke, who also has very little cartilage remaining in his knees, Wells may undergo injections of the synthetic lubricant, Synvisc, to deal with mobility within the joint. Foulke, who had surgery on both knees last year, had Synvisc injections throughout spring training and has recently displayed leg drive and effectiveness that eluded him throughout a disastrous 2005.

Wells went 15-7 last year in his first season in Boston but requested a trade so he could pitch closer to his San Diego home in his 20th and final season. When the Sox couldn’t get equitable return value for him, Wells reported to spring training and eventually rescinded his trade request. He was brought along at a deliberate pace in Florida due to the knee and opened the season on the DL. Wells made one rehab start at Triple-A Pawtucket on April 7 and was hit hard by Indianapolis (5IP, 7R) in a 9-1 loss at McCoy Stadium.

Wells, who was scheduled to face Seattle’s Gil Meche in Monday’s 11 a.m. Patriots Day game, will most likely see his start go to reliever Lenny DiNardo.

Thank God. I actually woke up earlier this morning thinking "Crap. I'm taking Monday off to watch the game and Wells is pitching??... Maybe I'll just go to work instead."

Now I can look forward to the game. They keep touting DiNardo as the next Arroyo, so now's a good time see.

Time to get Clemens or Dontrelle. What really bothers me about Well right now is that he will not be honest with the medical staff and management about when he is ready to pitch. He's gonna try to get back on the mound ASAP to earn his incentives. If he does that, we could see a few more starts like his last one.

What incentives are you talking about ? He hit them last year.

Yeah, I myself have made that comparison, and I truley belive it is accurate. I mean both are crafty, except Lenny is a lefty. He's earned this start, and I'll be lookin foward to watchin it.

lenny D is the man, he tore it up a in AAA and didnt do too bad in a few starts here,

he struck a bunch of guys against baltimore in a row in one start

So if Wells goes on the DL, and Dinardo gets the start, who gets brought up to replace Dinardo in the bullpen. The three most obvious choices are Delcarmen, or Van Buren. Both have pitched well in AAA. Meredith has had a good year so far too but its early, and last time they brought him up it didn't turn out so good. I don't think they want to bring Hansen up yet. I think its Delcarmen but wouldn't be surprised to see Van Buren.

Doesn't he still have incentives for number of starts etc.? I thought he had a relatively low annual guaranty of 2 - 2.5 million.

Your right about that. His base is aroung 2.5-3 million and if he hits his incentives by taking the mound for a certain amount of starts he can make upwards of 9 million.

And that worries me. Hopefully, he will not be able to bully Francona and Theo into taking the mound before he is ready like he did last year.

He tried to bully his way to not making the first rehab start, and it didn't work. I think they've had enough of his opinion and will rely on medical reports and the doctors opinion more.

It's Official.

Red Sox place left-hander David Wells on disabled list

Recall right-hander Jermaine Van Buren

BOSTON -- The Boston Red Sox today placed lefthander David Wells on the 15-day disabled list (retroactive to April 13) with a right knee sprain and recalled righthander Jermaine Van Buren from Triple-A Pawtucket. Executive Vice President/General Manager Theo Epstein made the announcement.

Van Buren will wear number 46 and is available for this afternoon's game against the Seattle Mariners at Fenway Park. The 25-year-old made his major league debut with the Cubs last August 31 and went 0-2 with a 3.00 ERA (2 ER/6.0 IP) in six relief appearances, limiting opponents to a .118 batting average (2-for-17).

Wells began the season on the 15-day disabled list recovering from right knee surgery. Activated last Wednesday, he made the start that night against Toronto and allowed seven runs on 10 hits and one walk in 4.0 innings, striking out one in an 8-4 loss.

Claimed off waivers from the Cubs December 1, 2005, Van Buren has 47 saves and a 1.86 ERA (25 ER/121.0 IP) in 111 minor league relief appearances since making the move from starter to reliever in 2004. He was named the Cubs' 2005 Pitcher of the Year at Triple-A Iowa after posting a 1.98 ERA (12 ER/54.2 IP) and setting a franchise record with 25 saves.

In 2005, Van Buren ranked second in the Pacific Coast League in saves and limited opponents to a .181 batting average, including a .158 mark by righthanders. The 6-foot-1, 220-pounder posted a 2-3 record in 52 Triple-A relief appearances. Van Buren had 65 strikeouts in 54.2 innings, an average of 10.7 strikeouts per nine innings.

In two relief appearances with Pawtucket this season, Van Buren tossed 4.0 scoreless innings, walked none, struck out six and limited opponents to a .214 batting average (3-for-14).

I like Van Buren. With all the talk about Papelbon and Lester, this guy has been more or less forgotten, but he has plus stuff and a funky hard to time motion. He is major league ready. He may not be in the long term plans, but if he impresses he would be excellent trade bait.

Dinardo may get wells next 3 starts as it looks at least that long before he can come back. The had chris snow on before the game and he said that it takes 3 different injections before it can be finished. One yesteday, one next week, and one the week after. So it will be at least 2 weeks before he could come back providing everything is going perfectly.

I am going to the game Monday, and I was worried because i didnt want to see Wells get hammered, at least with Dinardo pitching there is a chance we wont be down 8-0 by the 3rd inning
