Foulke hit 88 on the gun.

Every one says Foulke needs to hit 90, but when I was watching some of the Reliving the rivalry games on Nesn, for some 04 games Foulke opperated around 87-89 the whole time, so what I saw tonight was encouriging, especially the Change-ups i saw

It is encouraging, and he is still building arm strength.

I say the next step is to move Foulke into some important situations in the 6th or 7th inning and if he succeds their give him a shot at closing games agian. With Seanez sucking, I would like to see Papelbon pitch multiple, say 6th and 7th innings

That change he threw to Gomez was terrible though. Hopefully, he'll find more consistancy.

True, but the 3 or 4 after that looked good, plus his fastball was pinpoint with some nice upward movement

The rising FB is a myth.

ORS is right. Rising fastballs defy the rules of physics. Only submariners can actually throw rising fastballs, but not the ones you're thinking about.
Some physicists have also claimed that the curveball is an optical illusion, because that too was against the laws of physics. Anyone who has tried to hit them know that it is not an optical illusion. Similarly, I think the guys that faced Bob Gibson might tell you that the rising fastball is not a myth.

Curveballs are real. Rising FBs are not. What makes a moving object change it's trajectory as it spins through a fluid (air), is called the magnus force. It is dependent on velocity and angular frequency (rpm). They did a study where the measured the rpm of several fire balling young pitchers. The spin rates produced would require a velocity in excess of 200 mph to produce a magnus force large enough to overcome the force of gravity.

The reason it appears to rise is because it just falls less. A typical 90 mph FB takes enough time to reach home that the acceleration of gravity would make it fall ~3 ft. With the magnus force, the typical FB only falls ~1.25 ft, but those thrown harder with more spin fall less, thus creating the illusion of rise.

Good outing by Clement, fantastic control, and that sinker did some damage. The 7th I don't really care about, the first 6 he was rollin. Seanez needs some help, maybe he's just abd in a Sox uni. Foulke looked promising, good change, good command, hopefully he'll build on this.

Very interesting ORS. I knew the part about the illusion of rising because the harder thrown balls fall less than the eye would expect, but I did not know about the 200 mph study.

Of course the calls are coming in now to have Trot start full-time against lefties after his big 2 hits in tonight's game off of a lefty reliever. Well ok to those callers, with no consistent AB's & time on the bench for Wily Mo... we might as well give him a label that reads "Jay Paton in Waiting." After awhile even the calm collected Wily would get agitated. How else can you groom him into being a slugger that Theo imagined when he made the deal?

The Sox aren't in the business of grooming players, they are in the business of winning games. Grooming is what the minors are for. If Trot gives us a better chance of winning than Pena, then play him.

Edit: Grammatical errors

I think Wily Mo has been told that there is a very good chance that he will have the RF or 1B job next year, especially with Nixon in the last year of his contract. I don't think that he'll be a problem.

Explain how he'll get the AB's then that Theo wants to get him at, 300 or so. For this year they made the trade so the Vs lefty lineup could be powerful, not just because of what is expected for him in 2007.

Ok but its not helping him that much if he's collecting dust on the bench. This is moot so far as he will get the start later on today against Bruce Chen.

The ABs will come for Wily Mo. He'll play against most lefties. There will be injuries etc. If Jay Payton had stayed with the Red Sox last year, he would have gotten plenty of ABs in the second half.

About Seanez, how short of a leash does Theo have until he just jerks Seanez out of here? This guy cant even be trusted in a 10-run lead.

It will be short.....anymore appearances like this and he could find himself DFA'd. Francona most definitely has probably lost all trust in him. To me I don't even know why they brought this stiff back and I think he was signed when Theo was technically not with the team. Theo do yourself a favor and get rid of him soon.

Boston Globe

Francona didn't seem too concerned about Rudy Seanez's shaky inning of relief. The righthander allowed six hits and four runs, including a home run. Francona felt pitching in the rain and the wet ball affected Seanez

Considering his past AL performances, Spring training, and control issues even in Texas.. I'm just not buying that. It's a shame that Lenny DiNardo has to be sent down on April 12. He deserves that bullpen spot more, let alone it would make the bullpen stronger

I was a big fan of how Tito used Foulke last night. We're still gonna get the run support where we're gonna wind up with big run leads late into games and that's a good spot for Foulke to get his stuff back. And he didn't look that bad last night and overall, hell, he's got the same ERA as K-Rod right now

Erm, I definetly think they acquired Pena with 07 on their mind. I think they knew this would happen and that he would be stuck fighting for his AB's this year. Next year he will have an everyday job in Boston and this is what Theo was thinking when he made the move. I can't wait to see him play everyday.

I completely agree. He has sucked in the past and I believe last year in the NL was an abberation for him. He not as good as he was last year and the rain was not a factor. If it was Foulke would have struggled as well. Seanez just flat out sucks. He has no control and was really a waste of a signing.

I know that they acquired him for more of means for next season. His main role will be hitting against lefties for Trot this year. But Tito might give Trot more AB's against lefties if he continues to hit like does, thats just my main concern that Wily Mo gets out of rythm sitting more on the bench than he told he was going to get.
