I didn't know this was an issue actually.

What's the deal?

With Opening Day just a week away, David Ortiz said he didn't know when the club would sign him to an extension. Ortiz had expressed some confidence in January that a deal would be done by the start of the season, and John W. Henry had echoed Ortiz's comments that the club had signaled to him its willingness to negotiate an extension expeditiously. ''I told my agent when he got the word to let me know," Ortiz said. ''I don't want those thoughts in my head."

This is the first i have heard of it. I thought that the sox would wait until the end of the season to do so. I believe he still has a club option for next year! If this is truly weighing on him, then let's get it done. We all know we are going to do it, so let's get it done!

He deserves a new deal, he was the bigegst bargain in baseball the past 3 years.

That's the understatement of the day:D

I'm prepared to give the man whatever he wants out of my own pocket to ensure that he stays with the Red Sox for the rest of his natural life.

Yeah, '07 is a team option year.

no doubt the sox re-up that baby. This shouldnt even be an issue, Ortiz should expect to re-negotiate next spring. It is his fault for not having enough faith in himself to wait for a bigger contract. He took the low total when he was in the midst of his first real good yr. Theo got him, now he is upset about it. Whatever, you signed the deal, live with it....

Personally, I think they should rip it up this offseason and give him big bucks for the next 4 years. First, he deserves it. Second, it may help assuage some of the negative perception about the FO after the way they handled Damon and Arroyo. Whether the perception is deserved or not, it does exist. Lastly, it doesn't matter if he declines or not by the end of it because they have gotten value out of him in spades to this point. I'm not saying it will happen, but that would be the smart move, IMO.

They should do it now, I agree. But to play devil's advocate, they also may wait until the end of 06 to see his stats and those of Willie Mo. I hope that they don't, but I wouldn't be surprised.

i agree get it over it now! he deserves it ,the worst thing to do would be to waited out ,we have seen that hapened in the last few year

Or even what happened with Pedro, where they waited til he was FA to try. Knock it out now and keep him here

Not so fast sarasox, from ESPN Deportes.

Here's the article translated with an online translator.

MIAMI, Florida -- The toletero Dominican David Ortiz is near signing an extension of 50 million dollars with the Red Averages of Boston, ESPNDEPORTES.com told a family source tied al ballplayer.

"Big Daddy" would gain an average of 12.5 million annual in the seasons of the 2007 al 2010.

"David is going to receive more than 50 million dollars by the firm of that extension of contract, that raid to the 2010", the source said.

"David is very I please, although even they lack some details by defining", added.

Nevertheless, a representative of the agency SFX, that handles the career of Ortiz, abstained to give details of the negotiations with the Red Averages.

"We are negotiating, that is of public knowledge, but we are prepared to announce nothing. Still there is not agreement", said Fizgerald Astacio.

Ortiz, of 30 years, has become one of the most productive players of the Large Leagues since joined with the Red Averages before the season of the 2003, originating in Minnesota.

The inicialista and batter appointed has hit 119 home runs and has pushed 388 careers in three seasons with the Red Averages.

The quisqueyano remained in second place in the votings for the most Valuable prize of Player of the League American last year, when batted. 300 with 47 home runs and 148 careers towed.

The antesalista Alex Rodriguez, of the Yankees of new York, was the winner of the distinction.

Ortiz was the most Valuable Player of the Series of Championship of the 2004, when Boston returned from a disadvantage 0-3 to eliminate to the Yankees and to advance to the World Series.

In the Classic of Autumn, Boston swept to the Cardinals of San Luis in four parties to gain its first crown since 1918.

Ortiz will gain 6.5 million dollars in the 2006, when finalizes an agreement of two seasons and 12.5 million that signed in May of the 2004. The team possesses an option of 7.7 million for the 2007.

The player demands publically since the winter pause an extension of contract to the Red Averages.

Tuesday passed, Ortiz said that would leave his agents that took charge of the negotiations and that would not participate actively in the process.

EDIT: These translators kill me. 148 careers towed?

Good News indeed!

Spoke briefly with David Ortiz before the clubhouse closed about whether he was close to getting an extension done. He said he didn't know, but now that I'm aware of the report on ESPNDeportes that said Ortiz is about to sign a four-year extension for $50 million--my guess is that would include this season, but that's strictly a guess--I'll see if I can come up with more

Yeah, why not? who would want a over 30 year old guy?

He might be in his 30's but he does not play a demanding position. All he does is hit. And hit very very good. The difference between why Damon is not here and why the Red Sox want to keep Ortiz here is the positions they play. Damon takes a beating in centerfield and likely would have been useless towards the end of the deal while Ortiz justs goes to the plate and hits.....not very demanding. Plus he is the real face of the Red Sox.

Obviously Ortiz was wearing down last year. He carries too much weight on his bones, he will be the next Mo Vaughn.
