wow

this is weird

on espnnews bottom line

does this mean we move youk back to third?

wow this is a shocker

According to ESPNews, the Red Sox have claimed Hee-Seop Choi off waivers from the Dodgers. It was bound to happen one of these years. Rather than carry Choi initially, the Red Sox will probably option him to Triple-A and wait and see what kind of starts Kevin Youkilis and J.T. Snow get off to. It'll be the same deal as with Roberto Petagine last year, though we hope Terry Francona is a little more open-minded about letting Choi into the lineup. By June or July, maybe the 27-year-old will get a chance to take aim at the Pesky Pole. Since he's making just $750,000, it's a great roll of the dice for the Red Sox.

This is a good waiver pickup. Surprised LA let him go like that. If Youk or Snowflake get off to a bad start, then Choi will be a very good replacement.

Wow this is the first I have heard of this. Is he gonna be put down into the minors or will he be on the big league club.?

He isn't that bad. He is who the Marlins got in return for Lee. Good insurance. I would even play him in front of Snow as a starter.

The sox should cut Lowell and move Youk back to third

Lowell could hit better than Choi with 1 hand. I understand Choi is still young but thats a horrible idea.

That's assinine...Lowell could easily have a monster season this year. Everyone is capable of an off year...I really believe Lowell's was last year...and bringing him into a hitter's park like Fenway can only help push him in a positive direction.

The Dodgers released him so Nomar could play 1st. Nomar keeps helping the Sox unintentionally! It is absolutely mind-boggling that every other team didn't claim him before the Sox did.

He is only 27. He's like Bellhorn - great eye, holes in his swing - but he hits with power. He approximately hits around .260, but with an OBP over .360. If Papa Jack fixes the holes in his swing, PECOTA projects his potential to be David Ortiz in 2003. His fielding percentage last year was ridiculous - he only made 2 errors out of over 600 chances, something crazy like a .997 percentage. He could be a young Tino Martinez - solid D, 20 homers, and a tough out in the 6-8 spot.

He only costs 750k as well. I see Lowell or Snow being traded away by June.

but has an OBP over .360

or .349

Is that why he K's twice as much as he walks?

but he hits with power.

Yeah 40 HRs in almost 1000 ABs ... I'm pressed

I'm not totally down on this guy but lets be accurate.

Snow isnt the starter Youk is. Every time there has been the normal lineup out there Youk has been a part of it

Yeah Snow is a defensive replacement, and will occasionally spell Youk ... nothing more.

I'm sorry if it sounds somewhat bias, but can anyone tell me the last Asian player the Sox signed that actually didi anything ? Yes this SFOC. This signing is a joke in MHOP.

Hideo Nomo pitched a No-No for you guys.

Well didn't Hideo Nomo throw a perfect game?

It's not like the Sox have signed many Asian players, so the sample size is small.

Plus, Choi was the guy who carried Korea in the World Baseball Classic. Korea was killing everyone.

True , but he was a proven picture when they aquired him, his record was slightly above 500 and they released him the next year. Tell my someone we drafted or signed from the Orient that made any contribution ?

Wasnt a perfect game for Nomo. Just a No Hitter.

But everything else is dead on. Seems like after he was traded by the Cubs he didnt do as well. The potential and ability is still obviously there, and with a coach like Jackson, and a park like Fenway I am confident he can still become a VERY good player.

Very good pickup. I absolutely praise Theo on this one.

Hammer,

It's not fair to look at this guy's career average, and you know it. He's only played 4 seasons, been moved around a lot, and any young player's first season or two will scew the overall career average.

In 2004 with Florida before he was traded, here were his stats:

In only 281 at-bats, he hit 15HR, .270 BA, .388 OBP, made 721 plays at 1st with only 8 errors for a fielding percentage of 99%.

His last year and a half with the Dodgers have screwed up his numbers, because their hitting coach was messing with his plate discipline. Also, Dodger stadium isn't exactly the best park for a hitter.

I'm not saying Choi is a great player, but he has a lot of potential. PECOTA says Choi's top comparison is David Ortiz in 2003. Here are the numbers:

For comparison, David Ortiz in Minnesota over 6 seasons only hit 58 home runs in 1477 at-bats, or 1 HR / 25.4 at-bats. In 2003 with Boston, Ortiz hit 31 home runs, .288 BA, and .369 OBP (1HR / 14 at-bats).

Choi, in his entire career, has averaged 1 HR / 22.8 at-bats, but if you just look at his Florida numbers, he hit 1 HR / 18.7 at-bats. These pre-Boston numbers are pretty similar to Ortiz's.

What's not to like about this deal? This move has high-potential, is cheap, and is low-risk.

The Sox havent really picked up too many Asian players. Only ones that come to mind are Nomo, Denney Tomori, Kim, and now Choi.

They used to scout heavily in asia and signed a bunch of minor leaguers like sun woo kim, seung song, jin ho choo, sang lee, tomo ohka.......all guys that really turned out to be nothing.

I said I had no problem with the deal I just thought you were giving him too much credit. I took an average of his career ... you took his best numbers.
