Rudy Seanez (3 baserunners today) just can't pitch a clean inning. I'd lean towards cutting him and bringing Hansen north.

Agreed, so far he hasn't impressed at all and there isn't to much time left.

Mark Loretta & Coco Crisp just continue to get on base, I have no doubts they will both have a good season.

Loretta is now 15 for 34, parlay his performance into the regular season. He could very well be in the top 10 for AL runs scored, if not top 5

Hey guys, calm doown a little. Wouldn't you say the opposition this spring has been somewhat dilluted due to the WBC ?
Yes, but I don't expect him to keep hitting at a .450 clip.

exactly, Im not expecting him to have a Ted Williams like season or anything. I know that we will get more of a solid #2 hitter than Renteria, and he even had scored 100 runs.

projection

(.305 avg) (.360+ OBP) 30 Doubles, 13 Hrs, 70+ RBIs, 110+ Runs scored, 5 SBs

To me Hansen and Delcarmen have both impressed me greatly, i saw cut Riske and Seanez and bring the two young guns up to Boston with them.

This would be a pretty solid Bullpen

Hansen

Delcarmen

Papelbon-I think he should start, but probally wont to start the season

Taverez

Timlin

Foulke

Cutting Riske would not be smart. It would also leave our bullpen dangerously inexperienced outside of Foulke, Timlin and Tavarez. I'd give Hansen a little more time in AAA.

Good points. Cutting Riske and Seanez now means that Delcarmen and Hansen had better get the job done, or the Sox will quickly be dealing off players from the positions of depth in order to fill those holes. Let the season start and see how they do. If it's not good, you have replacements waiting in Pawtuckett.

I feel confident of the depth that we have in relief pitchers in Pawtucket. I agree that Sox should give leeway to Riske & Seanez for the beginning of the season, but at least we know they have what they will need stashed away down South

Hansen, DelCarmen, Van Buren, Martinez, Meredith, Breslow

I'd cut one, but not both (most likely Seanez) and bring up Hansen.

I wouldn't cut them now. I would send the young guns back down to AAA and let them get a lot of work in the first half of the season. Then if need be we can bring them back up later in the season and they will prob have a lot for confidence. They will also be able to work on their stuff a little more without the scrutiny of the boston media looking at their every outing. I think we will see Manny and hansen up this year, but not till later in the season!

Foulke good in 1st outing

Gordon Edes

Keith Foulke was sharp - he struck out the side in the eighth, fanning all three Ottawa Lynx batters he faced on 13 pitches. It appears that he's done for the day, and he should pitch again tomorrow, against the Blue Jays ... Schilling's line in this Triple A game: 7 IP, 8 H, 5 R, 0 BB, 10 K, 1 HBP, 1 HR, 109 pitches, a whopping 82 for strikes.

--------------------------------------

Today's game saw a shutout for both teams until the 9th inning when SDox minor leaguer Hertzler gave up a 2 run walkoff shot. DiNardo was solid through 4 shutout innings, allowing 4 hits while striking out 1. Julian Tavarez followed that 2 scoreless innings of his own. Riske and Hansen had then combined for 2 scoreless innings. Hansen has not allowed a run in 8.2 innings

Mike Lowell drew 1 of the 2 hits Sox batters were able to muster, raising his average to .270

Adam Stern- 0 for 4 (.360 avg)

Alex Cora- 0 for 3 (.214 avg)

Chris Durbin- 0 for 1 (.200 avg)

David Ortiz- 0 for 2, Walk (.375 avg)

Ken Huckaby- 0 for 1 (.250 avg)

Mike Lowell- 1 for 2, Walk (.270 avg)

Trent Durrington- 0 for 1 (.143 avg)

Wily MoPena- 0 for 2, Walk (.300 avg)

Tony Graffanino- 0 for 3 (.182 avg)

Raul Nieves- 0 for 1

Willie Harris- 0 for 2, Walk (.156 avg)

Jeff Bailey- 1 for 2, Walk (.455 avg)

Josh Bard- 0 for 3 (.238 avg)

Lenny DiNardo- 4 innings, 4 Hits, 1 K, 1.86 ERA

Julian Tavarez- 2 innings, 1 Hit, 0.00 ERA

David Riske- 1 inning, 10.45 ERA

Craig Hansen- 1 inning, 1 Hit, 0.00 ERA

Hertzler (L, 0-1)- 0.2 inning, 2 Hits, 2 Runs, 27.00 ERA

Good news about Foulke----let's hope it keeps getting better for him! That would make all of our lives a lot less stressful!

Foulke is looking good so far, just one game at a time Keith.

Coco continues to show off what he can do. He hit a leadoff single, drew a walk, but real story is back to back stolen bases. He now has 6 this spring.

----------------------------------------

EDIT: Stats

The Sox fell to the Blue Jays 5-3. This is their 5th straight loss, making the spring record at 6-16-1.

Tim Wakefield was tagged for the first time, going 5 innings while giving up 4 runs on 10 hits. He struck out 4 and didnt walk a batter. Before this, he had gone 9 scoreless innings so no need to be alarmed. Keith Foulke had another 1-2-3 inning, this time against major league batters. Keep it up Foulke. Manny Delcarmen pitched 2 solid shutout innings at the end.

For offense, Ortiz had went 2 for 4 with a RBI. Coco stole back to back bases. He now leads the team with 6. Alex Gonzalez broke out of his slump for a RBI double, Bard followed that with an RBI of his own to drive in Gonzo. Hee-Seop Choi made his unofficial red Sox debut in the late innings.

Coco Crisp- 1 for 3, Walk, 2 SBs (.462 avg)

Trent Durrington- 1 for 1, Double (.182 avg)

Mark Loretta- 0 for 4 (.395 avg)

Willie Harris- 0 for 1 (.152 avg)

David Ortiz- 2 for 4, RBI (.417 avg)

Manny Ramirez- 0 for 3, Walk (.344 avg)

Trot Nixon- 2 for 4 (.293 avg)

Kevin Youkilis- 1 for 2, Walk (.222 avg)

Enrique Wilson- 0 for 1 (.267 avg)

J.T. Snow- 1 for 3 (.286 avg)

Hee-Seop Choi- 0 for 1 (.111 avg)

Alex Gonzalez- 1 for 3, Double, RBI (.118 avg)

Adam Stern- 0 for 1 (.346 avg)

Josh Bard- 1 for 3, RBI (.250 avg)

Ken Huckaby- 0 for 1 (.222 avg)

Wakefield (L, 1-1)- 5 innings, 10 Hits, 4 Runs, 4 Ks, 2.57 ERA

Foulke- 1 inning, 0.00 ERA

Timlin- 1 inning, 2 Hits, 1 Run, K, 9.00 ERA

Delcarmen- 2 innings, 1 Hit, 2 Ks, 2.70 ERA

Foulke looked pretty good today. he got out of the inning on 13 pitches which is the same as yesterday (except he struck out the side yesterday). He looked comfortable out there, which seemed to be a big improvement!

Youk played 3rd today with Snow at first. (interesting) Choi came in later and went 0-1 with a groundout to 1st.

Wake had a good day, just made a couple bad pitches that ended up as homeruns. In the postgame, he said he feels real comfortable with Bard and that Bard has worked really hard getting ready to catch him.

Delcarmen pitched 2 scoreless innings and looked really sharp!

Getting closer to opening day!

Manny Delcarmen has really impressed me every time i have watched, even more so then Hasnen actually, I think between the two Delcarmen has a better shot of going north than Hansen.

I think that Hansen has a huge possbile upside; however i think people forget that he was in college last year at this time. I think that if we give him time to develop and not rush him then he will be great one day. Delcarmen was always in A ball and then last year made the jump to AAA--he may be ready for the bigs a little sooner than hansen. Of course it's nice to have this problem with quality guys in our system!

Josh Beckett is pitching today on Nesn right? I havent heard much about him this spring, does anybody know how he has been throwing, Velocity and Control wise
Posted

Yep first time Sox fans are going to be able to watch him pitch in the #19 Red Sox uni. Like Schilling, he's been used more in Triple A/intersquad matchups. His last spring training start was on March 16 against the Twins, going 5 innings allowing just 1 run.

Ive heard that the Sox camp is very optimistic of what they have seen thus far. His fastball is even clocking at 94-97, and breaking pitches are moving down & away from batters once they reach the plate.
