According to El Nuevo Dia, Juan Gonzalez will report to Red Sox camp on Monday to compete for a job as a reserve.

His agent reportedly confirmed the deal, saying Gonzalez would have the opportunity to make $1 million. Dustan Mohr has played very well this spring, so Gonzalez will have an uphill battle to win a spot as Trot Nixon's platoon player in right field. Mar. 19 - 1:46 pm

some quotes from his agent...

moments ago we reached a verbal agreement with the Red Sox and Juan will report to the spring training in Fort Myers Monday (tomorrow)

It is a minor league contract. Juan is only going to have 10 days before beginning of the season to try to make the team, which is why theres a good possibility that after the season begins he can go to Triple A (Pawtucket) a time in which the team understands that he is ready to play in the Major Leagues. But Juan has worked very hard this offseason and is in a great condition

Juan will have the opportunity to gain up to $1,000,000. Everything depends on how much time he spends in the Major League

This is a good opportunity for Juan. What he must prove is that he is healthy. Ten days can be a very short time to look for to gain a roster spot, but we do not want to him to put pressure. For that reason it is that the possibility exists that he can be in minor leagues also

Looks like I called this one....

Again it does no harm allowing him to come in and fight for a job. If he shows something from the previous Juan Gonzalez its a huge bonus. If he shows that he can no longer compete at the major league level then so be it. I still stick by my title to this thread in that he is worth a try.

Yeah, I have no idea why anyone is taking this negatively, like "oh, he wont amount to anything, he's got nothing left, etc." this is good that we're getting all the possible depth we can get at nothing prices, I mean Juan isn't a no-name and we got him to a MLC, I mean we could have a 20 HR threat in AAA, and if he does amount to nothing, no problem, we let him walk, nice try. Now we have 3 potential replacements for Nixon in Juan, Mohr, and late Kapler.

All I say is where do I sign up for that trade to get Wily?

He would be a HR threat at Fenway Park, though Papa Jack would need to work with him on his strikeouts and taking walks. But doing this trade could result with a trade of Trot.

id rather have nixon and pena split time this year, and have pena take over full time next year.

ALSO, in the foxsports article it says Pena averaged a HR every 16 AB's, i think playing in the AL and at Fenway Park could bring that down to 14-15 which if he had 550 AB's would be 35+ HR.

Very true, that is my thinking as well. Trot should play out his knowingly last season with Boston. Wily in Fenway would be a great addition I believe, he is just 24 so a lot of potential. His last 2 seasons in 200 games (600 ABs) he has clubbed 45 HRs. Now you place this right hander in Boston, we could have ourselves a young 40HR slugger on our hands.

Too bad, i was hoping Stern would be the 4th outfielder seeing as he his really doing well and did well in the WBC, but looks likes his chances have gotten slimmer

He'll still be in that role for the first 17 days of the season, then optioned back to Pawtucket. per Rule 5 draft rules

If he wasn't a lefty, then he prob would make it! However they don't need trot's partner to be a lefty!

not sure if people said this but They did give him a minor league contract. i will add something on the bad side for this too. he is old. he will probably be like a Ellis Burks who can't run or field.

Sox dealing for Wily Mo Pena of course now makes it harder for Juan Gone to even make the team at some point. I saw in Boston Herald that Juan will contend with Wily for Trot's platoon partner? Sorry "Gone" but you are just a name now, Wily is the present & future for this club.

Hmm...is it possible for Wily to play first? You know, it could be useful if Snow or Youkilis bombs.

Also, I have a question...when Stern serves his 17 days and is sent down, who will we probably bring up?

I think they are thinking about Pena playing 1st more if Lowell bombs out of the gate. Snow himself has been having a good spring. Even if does adequate offense, the Sox can still feel safe with his glove in a late innings lead or tie in a game.

As for who will be called up, Tony Masarotti is thinking it could be lefty Lenny diNardo or infielder/outfielder/pinch runner Willie Harris. Harris' contract becomes null if he doesnt make the big league roster by mid to late April.

I agree. The Sox will come out smelling like roses if Stern has a good AAA season. If he does and you combine that with his play in the WBC, they will have an attractive trading chip in the offseason (I don't see Stern getting playing time here with the likes of Crisp and Ellsbury on the way up).

According to El Nuevo Dia Juan Gonzalez is now on his way to Oakland. Seems like Juan & the Sox agreed to void the contract or something, I don't really know ...

Well isn't that a shame.

( It's in Spanish BTW )

According to the Boston Herald, Juan Gonzalez has backed out of his contract with the Red Sox to sign a minor league deal with the A's.

"I never saw him show up, so he’s probably gone," manager Terry Francona said. "From his point of view, I’m sure once we got Wily Mo [Pena], he probably thought this was not the place to be." Sadly for Gonzalez, the A's are just as stacked with right-handed bats.

Is it possible to apologize with your foot actually inserted into your mouth? How about typing? Can you type an apology with your foot in your mouth? Just curious.

You are barking up the wrong tree there, man. He won't fess up when he's caught in a lie or wrong, and attempts to call him out go ignored.
