decent with the glove not the bat. i knew there was never a market for him and that he would never get anything close to 5 million. he is actually taking a paycut as he made 3.4 million last year.

I'll take it!

The Red Sox might not be a lineup of All-Stars like the Yankees, but they have roleplayers who will each contribute in their own way.

This year, the Red Sox will prove that the whole is greater than the sum of its parts.

That is EXACTLY what I'm thinking too ACL. I mean, the defense on the infield should be very solid, especially when Snow is playing.

The sox have proven players at all 9 positions, and even though most of the 04 team is gone, every starter except for Loretta and Crisp has won a WS before. For a massive restructuring and a supposed "rebuilding" year, that's not bad. Especially at ONE YEAR.

I'd rather have a sure handed fielder at that position than a sure bat. How many of you cringed every time a ball was hit in that direction last year? The first half of 04, I was reasonably certain the ball would be caught or bobbled, but where it would land when it left Nomar's hand was anyone's guess. The only thing to count on was that he would look annoyed. Thanks beautiful.

I was among the maybe 7.5 people who was thrilled when OC was traded for and to this day don't understand the reasoning for letting him go. I'm sure they are myriad and complex and the peasants aren't allowed to know why. Whatever.

Burleson was the last good hit, great glove guy that I can remember. Then again, I'm old and the memory is starting to go.

in the end there was no other team bidding for alex gonzalez services thus the red sox had the upper hand in the negoiations with gonzalez and the result was a short commitment at lower money than gonzalez was looking for.

I, for one, am very glad to see that the holes have been plugged!

Defensively up the middle we're looking excellent IMO.

nice work FO

Breathe Red Sox Nation, our holes have been filled. All thats left is the potential Wells trade. I am shocked, just 1 year? Again I say, in Theo I trust :)

The Herald also noted this signing is in more accordance to set up Pedroia to later on be their starting shortstop. I wouldnt mind if I were to see Sox extend Loretta's contract by 1 or 2 more seasons to bridge the gap for Lowrie.

Wow, very happy with the deal, we get a GG shortstop who with some work can hit .270 with 20+ HRs. Also this offseason we have improved at every element over lats year. Starting is better, Bullpen is vastly improved, the Infield defense was pumped with 3 GGs (Snow at 1st), and the offense is quietly improved over last year. I am very happy to get a guy with experience and some pop in Gonzo, hopefully the dirt won't be as bouncy for him as Rentanerror

Look at the potential HRs we could get outta this lineup if ALL goes well

1) Coco Crisp - 15

2) Mark Loretta - 15

3) David Ortiz - 40

4) Manny Ramirez - 40

5) Trot Nixon - 20

6) Jason Varitek - 20

7) Mike Lowell - 30

8) Kevin Youkilis - 20

9) Alex Gonzalez - 20

That is pretty friggin potent

looks good.

Although I HIGHLY doubt Gonzalez gets 20. Lowell could get 30, but I wouldnt bank on it....but it is a definate possibility. Same with Youk.

But yes, very potent.

Yeah, probably not 20 out of youk, but I wouldn't bet against 20 from Gonzalez. He hit I think 22 or 23 in 04 in proplayer which is much less the hitters park that fenway is. I'd say 25-30 is a safe bet from Lowell being the disgusting pull hitter he is, fenway is his heaven. I don't think though that power has been the signature of the Boston offense the past couple years, its always been efficiency and run scoring.

The Jake is a notorious pitchers park and Coco batted .270 there last season. He hit .320 on the road put his home in fenway and I don't think you can deny his numbers will be comporable to what a certain long haired idiot did a year ago in his career year. Crisp is on the ascent too, something you can't say about that shaggy guy who just got purchased for New York. Loretta is a sure bat who hits for high average all the time with good OBP between those two, you've got a better 1-2 than last year and the same 3-4. Thats going to be efficient. The back end could well improve too. With our improved defense and pitching to go with this seemingly well stacked offense, can we really call this a transition? If schilling is in the shape he says he is, the Red Sox might have some fun this year. I want to know why the Yankees are world series favorites and the Sox are getting balked at just because they didn't sign the big names. Is that really what its about? Wasn't everyone ripping chicago a year ago for not dipping into free agency? Wasn't everyone saying that moving Carlos Lee was a mistake? Good call.

The Sox are poised to make a hard run this year, I'm not saying they'll win it because I think Chicago is so dominant, but I am saying they will absolutley be in the mix. The Yankees are going to be a dominant offensive team, but looking at their staff and pen their built on MORE question marks than the sox had last year. They remind me a lot of the sox of 03.

I'll take that we needed a good player like Gonzalez. Krisp and Gonzalez the youth of the Boston Red Sox. It sounds good.

Wow. We could really dominate with a line-up like. If all goes well considering no starters injured we could make a push for the World Series again   . Supposing Gonzalez hits 20 im thinking hes a 15-23 who knows it could happen and im praying on it.

It's a nice lineup but we're not going to be able to out slug the Yankees this year. We need to worry about pitching. If we win this division it'll be because of pitching ... not our lineup.

Yankees will choke! Quote me on it. You'll see.

You can't really choke unless you're set up to win ... and with the Yankees pitching staff ... I don't think they are set up to beat anyone.

this team is much improved defensively than last year especially on the left side of the infield.

I can understand saying at the SS position but Billy Ballgame stood on his head at 3B last year. He had 11 errors, but take into consideration that atleast 3 of them happened during the week he was having an arm problem.

If Lowell is an upgrade over Ballgame defensivly it is only a minimal upgrade.

The man did win a gold glove last year-- so while I admit not seeing much of his play last year, he can't be much of a downgrade. It's at least a wash defensively.

I also agree with your earlier remark about how the Red Sox will not outslug the Yankees. Nobody in baseball will. But how many times has the best offensive team in baseball won the World Series? Not unless that best offensive team also had great pitching, and I wouldn't classify the Yankee pitching as "great." Good enough to win the AL East? Perhaps, but not good enough to run away with it IMO.

Gonzalez should be better than Renteria defensively, and while 20 homers is a stretch, he should hit .270 with 10 homers, and with the on base machine Youkilis hitting in front of him he should have some chances for RBIs. There's a really good chance IMO that Gonzalez matches Renteria's offensive output for 2005 next season at a fraction of the price.

I think the Sox have a chance to be better than 2005 with the team currently put together. The pitching is better, the defense is better, and considering that they've got Lowell, Gonzalez, and Snow coming from pitchers' parks to Fenway, and Crisp on the rise, Nixon healthy (hopefully), and Manny+ Ortiz back for their assault on the AL, about the same offensively.

I would have signed Gonzalez at $5 million, so I'm thrilled with getting him for $3.

Once again we are going to see Torre spend a lot of time going to the mound during the game to make changes. there is no way they will catch lightening in a bottle like they did last year with chacon and smalls saving their bacon.

I also think we will have another chance to lead the ML in runs scored which is more important than slugging average IMO.

decent with the glove is an understatement compared to who he replaced. what did he have last year 16 errors total?? What we have here I believe is a win/win situation...A-gonz already can throw leather...now when papajack gets ahold of him I have no doubt that he can help him with his stick...remember, living and hitting at fenway can help alot of hitters improve...we are looking good....................(in my best freddy prinze voice)
