If he shows the same glovework and exceeds far past Gonzalez in offense for spring training, I could see it happening. Obviously Gonzo having a starting role is not yet a given. Why else would they sign him to a contract that only becomes guaranteed if he makes it to opening day?

Good thing that they signed him to a one year deal instead of multiyear deal at more money. He apparently gets a bonus if he isn't released before Spring Training. So it looks like he's here on a tryout bases or something.

It looks to me that Pedroia get a tryout while Gonzalez is playing in the WBC. If Pedroia impresses, Gonzalez might get cut before he plays a ST game.
