No problem. I saw that some of the threads were getting some draft discussion, so I thought I'd put an organized list together and start a thread. Mods, maybe this should be moved to the Sox MiLB Forum after the season starts so we can discuss who they should be looking at in the draft and who they get after the draft.

Any early rumors about who we're looking at?

There are some prep-stars and college players that are certainly on the radar. I don't know them, but BA publishes scouting reports for amatuers. The list is likely to change since high school and college seasons are looming.

I have a question that has always confused me, is this alson known as the "rule 5 draft" or is that something completly different?

The Rule-5 draft comes at the end of the season, in November I think. This is where teams can draft any player from another teams farm system that is 4 years removed from the draft and isn't on the 40-man roster. Rule-5 picks must be kept on the 25-man roster the next season or be returned to the team they were drafted from. Basically, it is a crap shoot on mid-level talent.

Why do teams get different draft picks if other teams sign their free agents? Like Johnny Damon. It looks like we have New York's draft pick because they signed our guy. Why is this?

any good stats on Vermilyea who the Sox picked up?

If you offer arbitration to a type A free agent and another team signs that player you get their first round pick. Exeptions being if they have a top 15 pick which is protected. Then you would get a 2nd round pick. Also if that team were to sign a higher ranked type a free agent the other team would get the higher pick and you would get the next pick. Losing a type a free agents also gets you a sandwich pick between the first and second round, type B between the 2nd and 3rd.

It's an attempt to balance out teams in a way that a salary cap might in other sports. It basically means that, while small-market teams may end up being like MLB farm teams for the most part (able to keep a player only as long as they can afford him before BOS or NYY or NYM come along), they should be ensured that they CAN keep being that farm team by getting draft picks in return and constantly having first shot at the best talent.

So, if the Yankees or Red Sox come along with their massive checkbooks and sweep Aubrey Huff away from TB, and if TB has offered Huff arbitration, then TB gets those first round and/or sandwich picks. If TB doesn't offer Huff arbitration it indicates that they don't want him and they do not get the picks when they lose him.

That's the basic theory of it. Comparing it to a salary cap might not be accurate, but it is a way of trying to create parity in the league.

Well put. Also, you can see why the red sox would give a little more thought to letting go of type A free agents, as they clearly view those draft picks as precious. (who wouldn't if you could land a Felix Hernandez, craig hansen or Mark Prior!!)

Hernandez was an international FA signing out of Venezuela. I think the system needs to be tweaked. Teams are learning to take advantage of the system. If you lose a type-A pitcher, but then sign a type-A pitcher, the actual draft spots are just exchanged, but you do pick up a sandwich pick. The Sox have been pretty good at this the last two years.

I think the only way we keep Vermilyea is we offer the team we got him from, sadly i have no idea who it is, something to let us keep him. Its not that uncommon for teams to work out trades to keep rule 5 guys without keeping them on the major league roster all year. It was rumored the Sox tried to do this with Adam Stern last year and the Braves wouldn't listen to any offers. Stern may actually turn into a pretty good player, but hes clearly not there yet.

That said I'm not even sure we value him that high.

Rule 5 takes place on the last day of the winter meetings in December.

I knew it was at the end of the winter meetings, just couldn't remember if those came in late-Nov or early-Dec.
