I've been busy with computer maintenance and software for tax season, so I haven't been around. With the upcoming post season play-offs and eventual Super Bowl, the previous format for prizes and picks is not relevent. Picking just four games, then two wouldn't be very challenging, as there would be many ties. I was hoping that some of you bright guys and gals would offer some suggestions. I searched, but didn't see any. So I'm thinking of several of options :

First : Is this just going to be for fun and prizes or just for fun ? It would make a difference as to which format.

Second : The type of format.

Format Type 1 : This would be a format similar to the Skins ( golf ) . Whoever is going to enter must do so at the beginning, meaning this week, you can't join in a week or two latter. You'd have to have 10 posts or more and there must be at least 8 entrants. You would have to pick the four games this weekend against the spread. Asumming there are at least 8 or more entrants ( hopefully more ), then if there is a clear winner a prize is awarded, if there is no clear winner, the prize and the next week's prize are combined to form a larger prize ( example if the original prize for week 1 was for $ 50, it would be added to $ 50 for week 2, thus making the second week total $ 100 ), all of the original participants would be start again in week 2 with the a clean slate. This would continue until there is a clear winner. If there is a clear winner before the Super Bowl, the winner would be paid the amount in the pool, and the pool would start again and continue until there is another winner, etc. Eventually, we'll reach the Super Bowl with whatever pool has accumulated. At this time, a final winner will be determined. This will be accomplished by a combination of pick and total points scored. Clearly this format favors the use of prizes.

Format Type 2 : This format will also be picking against the spread and use a point system. The point system would be as follows : one point ( a +1 ) for a win and minus point for a loss ( -1 ) for each game. Once again you must be entered from the beginning and the other stipulations of 10 posts and at least 8 entrants would apply. The winner would be determined at the end of the Super Bowl. The winner would be total points accumulated. If there is a tie then the total points scored in the Super Bowl would be the tie breaker. This format could be for a prize or not.

In the case of both formats, as long as you enter this weekend, it allows you to miss a week's picks without being eliminated. This could help or hurt you, but it will allow for the "oops factor" ( I forgot , was too busy, etc. ). So clearly , I need to get some quick input to determine if it's worth doing, and if so what format. As always, my primary concern is to have as many participants as possible having fun. So please give me some feedback as soon as possible so that I can set it up. My appologies for the short notice.

I like the sound of format #2, but I have a question. Do we make the picks for the entire playoffs now or do we get to pick each week? The format sounds similar to NCAA B-Ball tourney pools, where you fill out the bracket for the entire tournament before the games begin. I prefer this method, although some may prefer to pick week-by-week since wrong picks in the first week can really hurt you in the method I suggested. Either way, count me in, I'll play whichever game the majority wants.

Both formats would be week by week. This is due to the fact that both are based on the spread and the spread will change every week ( for obvious reasons injuries, location, weather, etc ). I thought of the bracket method, but as you stated, people could and would be eliminated early. Prize or not ?

That's right, didn't think about the spreads. You know me, I like to pick for fun, so I'll leave the prize determination up to you and the others that provide input. If you have enough entrants, I'll be picking for fun, but if you need me to I'll play for a prize if there is one.

I'll get in on a football contest, I need a reason to watch the playoffs with my Jets just plain sucking. Playing for prizes or pride makes no difference for me, it'll be fun either way.

If you win, you could always donate it !

I like the sound of format 2 as well. If it's for prize money or no prize money does not matter to me at all, however, if there IS prize money, I'll be in for that. But yes, format 2 sounds good. Good idea Cape :D

so im assuming we would have to put money in for these said prizes? anyways, i would prefer format 2 should it happen

You assume wrong. There are no fees. If there are prizes, they will be provided by me.

I'm in, as usual...

Either formate is fine with me, when its for a prize, I usually do bad, and when its not for a prize, I usually do bad...so when I follow that pattern, I'm set in both forms:thumbsup: ...lol

But yea, I'm in, and either format'll work for me

But as a suggestion...and a way for there to be a sure winner, I saw once a pool...for MNF, and what they did is take a piece of paper, and write it into a grid..10boxes-by-10boxes, making 100 boxes. And then you randomly pick a number 0-9 outta a hat, and put those numbers along the 2 sides(u'd have to do it twice). and one sides one team, the other is the other team. And then the last number of the score is the number you go by. So if the Pats win 37-21...you'd want your number to be 7 under Pats, and 1 for whoever their playing, and each contestant get 1 box, if it lands on a blank, It rolls over. Then..if it keeps roling over every week, for the Superbowl, you'd have to put our names in up to 5 times each in the boxes, to fill em all up, and then sum1 would def. win.

IDK, I've seen people do it that way, just an idea.

We did a contest like that last year RSR made a chart and I believe assigned the numbers randomly.

I ran grid contests for years for the Super Bowl, they can be fun and profitable for the winners. But the down side is they'e for one game and it's a pain filling 100 squares even in person.

Here is a link to the thread we did last year. http://www.talksox.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2702

The square apparently isn't showing up but RSR computerized it so he may have had a way to find a faster way to do it. This could be done in addition to your contest(s).

Sounds good to me.

PS : You haven't indicated which format you prefer.

I don't think I really have a preference of which one to pick. I guess I would want the one that has the least chance of ending in a tie and not being decided by points in the Super Bowl.

I take that as #2.
