So if you goto a ballpark and boo the performance of a club that is rebuilding for the future, why can't you just choose to stay home instead? One might even suggest that the person who forks over 40 bux for a ticket to watch a team not even trying to contend is more of an idiot than someone who chooses to show his displeasure with the team by not bothering to waste his hard earned money. Put it this way, would you pay money to go watch a movie that promises its sequel will be much much better?

First of all, I consider money I spend on rent, food, medical needs, etc., as "hard earned". I consider money I spend on going to sox games, renting movies, drinking beer to be "well earned". Personally, I see a difference. I can't always earn money to go to a game, and I'm going to work harder to get food than to go to a game. When I have some extra, I see a ball game.

Second, I'm not sure you understand how booing works. People don't just show up to a park and boo, as you imply. Nobody buys their ticket and says "I can't wait to boo my team today." (Except, perhaps, Detroit Lions fans). Fans want to see players go out there and give it their all. When a dumbass play happens, or when Renteria boots his 30th ball at 10 million a year, that's when booing happens. Of course I want to see the sox win when they play, but if they don't I don't see it as a wasted opportunity. I love going to a ball game because you never know what you're going to see.

Teams that are rebuilding are not giving up. They are playing people who haven't yet proven themselves.

"Put it this way, would you pay money to go watch a movie that promises its sequel will be much much better?"

Put it this way, if you go see the sequel without having seen the first movie you are both a dumbass and a bandwagon jumper.

I guess that you believe it is only worth watching players who are at the top of their games; guys who won't improve any more but who have reached their peak: Jeter, A-Rod, Matsui, Posada, Giambi, Sheffield, Damon etc.,

I like watching guys grow and become better players before my eyes. I think that's what attaches a player to a fanbase; I imagine that's something you appreciated about Jeter, wasn't it? I also imagine that's one of the thing that I hear frustrated yankee fans venting about when they wish the Yankees would produce some homegrown talent of their own.

It will be fun watching Papelbon, Lester, Marte, Beckett, Pedroia, Hansen and Ellsbury get better over the next few years. Fun for me at least.

Well said, I had been to Papelbon's major league debut against the Twins on the day of the trading deadline. I didnt know what to expect but s how was put on me for sure. Papelbon quickly etching himself in Red Sox Nation's thoughts with his 7K performance in 6 innings allowing 3 runs; back to back HRs from Olerud and Ortiz; followed by the much replayed moment of Manny coming out to pinch hit to an uproarious standing ovation before and after he had drove in the game winning run. Schilling complimented that with his 1-2-3 save in the 9th.

So you probalby advocate for tearing down Fenway to add 20,000 more seats to get more money right? It's easy for you to say when its not your extra 12 million that would be offered to Damon.

The yankees are the ONLY team that does that. Can't you see that? There is ONE team that constantly, year after year throws money at star players, often overpaying them by millions and millions of dollars. And what happens? They don't win. They don't win the WS at least. When they did win it they didn't have a 200 million payroll, they had homegrown players and cheap team-player types. But I digress...

there is only one team spending money and yet two teams raking it in, sounds a little supicious to me, and i wouldnt throw 12 mil more at damon or tear down fenway but still we are making tons of money and i dont see it getting spent, the fo had better hope a lot of guys overacheive next year if they arent planning on doing something big

Good seats (sounds like)

When the Yanks had their run, they had homegrown players like Bernie, Jeter, Posada, Rivera and Pettitte, but Tino, Knoblauch, Brosius, O'Neil, Wells, Cone, Clemens, Jeff Nelson, Stanton, Wetteland, Boggs, Fielder, Key, Gooden and many others that were not homegrown. The Yankees kept the core of the team together, realizing that it was special, by spending $ to keep them in the fold. The ones that they let go, were basically finished or washed up.

Exactly, yourself. I was talking about people with familes to support. When you get to that age, you start to realize different things. I dont blame you though, I once was like you too. It's just another phase that one has to pass during the maturation process.

You spent money to go see a rebuilding club. If you pay money to go see the Royals, and then come back and complain about how bad the game was and how the team just isn't very good, do you really expect anyone to sympathize with you? You buy a ticket to go see a rebuilding club, you should know what to expect. Therefore, you should not be allowed to boo. You boo a club that should be playing better, you do not boo a club that everyone knows is rebuilding.

Not every discussion with a Yankee fan has to turn into a pissing match over who's more "loyal". You can stick to a baseball discussion without launching into a "you're not a good fan spiel". BTW I pay money to go watch and root for the UNIFORM. I have my favorite players, but I dont have enough of a man-crush to pay to watch a so called favorite athele. I dont wanna be the one to tell you that Santa Claus isn't real, but in this day and age, you probably shouldn't get too attached to individual players.

Hey champ, there is a PM system, don't clutter up threads with garbage. I'm sure he would love to hang out with you on new years, and best of luck on your interview, perhaps john henry could steer you in the direction of the nearest super market.

But anyways, I don't think the sox have any chance at Sizemore, the Guardians are a young team, built around their young hitters, something the sox are trying to achieve. It wouldn't make sense to deal for him simply because he would cost a papelbon and a delcarmen or so. Reed won't be as expensive as advertised, I think that is who we will land provided the sox can some how bolster the bullpen with a Yhency Brazoban (through trade, David Wells would bring him back) or a Julian Taveras. We could give up Arroyo to get Reed but we're going to have to do some negotiating.

PS The idea of trot in center makes me want to puke. I want to see him healthy before I put him into one of the most rigorous positions on the field.

marte in right would be a disaster in fenway park. nixon at his age now can barely play it. nixon does not have the speed to play in center. he could never cover all that ground. he could only do it in a pinch if needed.

what do you mean "nixon at his age"? do you have any idea what you're tlaking about? manny is 33, damon was 30, and nixon is 31, i don't think age is a factor

When I get to what age? Do you know how many children I have, how old I am, how many graduate degrees I have or what my life is like? I don't think so. Thanks for the life-lesson though, I'll put it in my pocket and pull it out once I've matured enough to think at your level.

"You should not be allowed to boo." enough said.

Agreed. I'm pretty sure you were the one that said "Would you still be willing to pay the highest prices in the league to watch a team of the future?" as if that is a bad thing. Its not a bad thing and it goes very nicely with you rooting for the UNIFORM. I would pay to see the Red Sox, whether they are Johnny damon or Jacoby Ellsbury. You are implying that it is only worth taking money off your kids plate if you're paying to see the yankees, not a rebuilding team. I think baseball is worth seeing live in a place like fenway or yankee stadium because its baseball qua baseball. The essence of the game is what matters, not necessarily who is playing.

All that aside (I'm done arguing with you about whether or not it is worth it to root for/care about a team that is "rebuilding"):

Trot is only 31. He plays like he is 33 and is injured as often as someone who is 35. Still, I think he's a very good defensive RF, making tremendous plays on nearly any ball he can get to. . He might not get to as many balls as other players do, but the ones he gets to he plays very well. Decent arm too.

Marte should play LF if necessary.

nixon can barely stay heathy anymore for a full season. he doesn't have the best range anymore. injuries have hurt his ability to play right field at a high level. hes not as good in the field as he used to be. age does have a factor on how players play in the field. just ask bonds. hes a former gold glover who can barely play the field now because of injuries. nixon has been injury prone for most of his career. he best outfield position for the red sox now would be in left field if ramirez was not there because he would not have to cover as much ground because of the wall.

Nixons issue is health, but I think he might actually have a healthy season. He isn't that bad in the field.

O.K. I am really lazy, and have no intentions of reading this whole thread but it seems like maybe no one has come up with the idea of Marte playing left field. Left field at fenway is practically another DH spot. Its very small, of course, there are 81 road games, but I think Marte could hold it down. There have been reports that the deal buster in this manny deal is which outfielder will be coming to the sox. There is this pretty good 22 year old kid who the sox want and they don't want to take Matos. This is exactly the kind of thing that makes me happy. This could make the deal worth doing, especially if he has the range for center field. If he can play center, slot marte into left, nixon holds it down in right and voula, we have ourselves an outfield. If not, then we spin him, slotting marte in left nixon in right blah blah and again we find ourselves with, yes thats right, an outfield. Shocking.

We may even be able to come out of this with a pitching staff if we get another outfielder in this deal, we could keep arroyo while dealing away wells for a bullpen guy to take arroyos set up spot as he would move to the rotation in clements old spot.

MARTE IN LEFT! HES DONE IT BEFORE AND HE CAN DO IT AGAIN! (but it won't be pretty at first its better than preston wilson who some of you seem to be rooting for and all of you will be doing a 180 like good little sox fans and booing him into the ground come the second week of april.)

Yeah, I don't know why this thread wasn't just titled "Can Marte Play LF?" Because that would be the easiest place for him to play. Let's not get this wrong: Nixon is an excellent RF in boston. He knows the field very well, hits for good power, and covers pretty good ground for someone with as many injuries as he has had. He is also a dirtdog and would run through a wall for the sox. he's as hard nosed as Varitek, which is something that is not only good for the team but makes other teams envious.

In any case, Marte in LF, Matos in CF, Nixon in RF, with Lowell, Tejada, Loretta and Youkilis in the infield with Tek and Ortiz would be a decent lineup. Slower than death itself, but decent:

Youkilis

Loretta

Tejada

Ortiz

Tek

Lowell

Nixon

Marte

Matos??

That gives us 9 guys who all have potential pop. 9 guys who can't run and who are somewhat lumbering. good lineup though. I would prefer the prospect over matos of course, but that may be dreaming.

Posted
The sox are station to station anyways and we have speed where we need it. Should that be our lineup, Matos is rangy enough for CF and Tejada has good wheels as well. I prefer we keep manny, but should we deal him I hope we get Markakis, and not Matos. Matos would be serviceable though.

There is no way that anyone will want to see Nixon playing CF he doesn't have the speed to catch upto the balls hit out there. You need someone who has alot of speed out in CF. The only good thing about having Trot in CF would be the fact that his arm is strong and he could make the throws to home from there.
Posted
I don't think anyone is saying put him in center. I think for the most part its just talk about Marte going to either left or right. I think left. Which I personally would love.

There is nothing good about having Trot in CF. He is a below average RF as is. He doesnt have a good arm. He has never recorded 10 assists in a season while other RF's with guns who teams usually dont run on annually rack up 10+ per year. In 90 career games in CF his RF is well below league average. Nixon is at 2.01 and average is 2.41.
