The Red Sox and John Flaherty have reached a preliminary agreement on a one-year, $650,000 contract, according to the AP.

At least Ken Huckaby is a truly strong defensive catcher. Unless he has some juicy tips about Yankee weaknesses, Flaherty brings nothing at all to the table these days. He's certainly not worthy of anything more than a minor league contract. Dec. 22 - 7:36 pm et

either Flaherty or Huckaby will probaly be gone by the end of spring training

Screw Huckaby. Lets go Bronx fans. Tell us what Flaherty is good for. If he's used to being a personal catcher it's worth it.

To be honest, I like Flaherty and all. He did a fine job with RJ but outside of that he was crap. He cant hit anymore and his defense declined severly. If he didnt hit it off with RJ he might have been released last year.

It's a good thing that back up catcher position is settled before Christmas. I was beginning to worry. Now all that's left is centerfield, first base, shortstop and Manny.

This signing makes absolutely no sense, IMO. I think Shoppach deserves a shot and is worth more to the team on the roster than in the trade market. Huckaby signed to a MiLB contract made sense because he could be injury insurance in case either of the 25-man Cs got hurt. At least it isn't going to cost much.

Hes good for absolutley nothing. Huckaby is much better defensively. Hitting they both suck

Did Huckaby in fact sign? I remember a while back it being close but never hearing any confirmation on that one.

NOOOOOO!!!!!

i loved Johnny Flaherty. He was a nice Irish kid from New York City. Hes pissed that we let him go. :(

I like Flaherty and I think you guys arent appreciating his worth. The only thing you guys ever look at are stats. Stats wont tell you how good he is with young pitchers, they wont tell you how good a baseball guy he is, they wont show his quiet leadership, they wont tell you that he is very good when it comes to preperation. Granted, he didnt hit much last year, but the year before I remember him coming through with some big hits for us. All 3 years he spent here he played a solid defensive backstop and was always OK with the bat (except last year of coarse), nothing that really hurt us.

At least his career will have come full circle, retiring with his original team and I wish him all the best.

Thanks Johnny Flaherty (I love saying that hahah...the word Flaherty with the New York accent sounds so cool  hah )

You recently asked the same question in another thread, and I posted a link to a Boston Globe article with the details. I don't remember the thread.

Awesome move Larry! Damn Larry you know how to fight a war. When your enemy hits you hard, you strike back fast and harder. Hit em in the gut. Yankees are reeling now! You showed them!!!

YEAH, THAT'S RIGHT YANKEES! HOW YOU LIKE ME NOW?

But seriously, Flaherty is a very good and experienced defensive catcher who should have no trouble catching Wakefield. He's not much of an offensive threat but niether was Mirabelli. Wakefield needs someone who knows what they are doing. I like Shoppach but he wasn't going to manage. He will probably be traded at this piont. It does make one thing clear. The sox are commited to Wakefield in the rotation next year.

what does this have to do with managing a baseball game...no doubt shoppach can hit, but these stats don't prove how he can manage a game.

No, they don't. But scouting reports have Shoppach catching a good game, a quick throw to second, and a good athletic build for the position. I don't understand why you want either of the complete wastes at the plate instead of Kelly, nor why you say Shoppach won't "manage" based on his grand total of 29 innings caught.
Posted
I'd rather groom along Shoppach, personally. Call him up to at least to see if he's worth holding onto for the future. Flaherty and Huckaby are throwaway players.
Posted

nothing against flaherty, but I really wanted to see shoppach as our backup catcher.

:o

edit: lol I haven't posted in so long and I have a millar quote in my sig. oh well. it's staying

if shoppach has any trade value in which you can either fill centerfield, shortstop or firstbase then you have to move him because you already have a starting catcher.

Red Sox signed catcher John Flaherty, who had been with the Yankees, to a one-year, $650,000 contract.

The Red Sox wouldn't be giving him the major league deal if they didn't see him catching Tim Wakefield regularly next year. There are worse solutions, such as having no one at all behind the plate. Still, if the Red Sox are going to keep Kelly Shoppach, then they at least need to give him the opportunity to compete the job. Dec. 23 - 1:45 pm et

Now they have 4 possible MLB catchers and only have room for 2. One of them is Varitek, so Huckaby and/or Flaherty will be cut after spring training and shoppach could be traded or dominate AAA for another year
