The Houston Astros declined to offer salary arbitration to Roger Clemens on Wednesday, a move that means he can't re-sign with the National League champions until May 1.

The seven-time Cy Young Award winner spent the last two seasons with his hometown team and hasn't decided whether to pitch next year or retire. At 43, he led the major leagues in ERA at 1.87, going 13-8 to help the Astros reach the World Series for the first time.

He made $18 million, and the Astros didn't want to risk going to salary arbitration while they awaited his decision whether to play. Clemens still intends to pitch for the United States in March during the inaugural World Baseball Classic.

"We expected this because we talked a great deal about this," said his agent, Randy Hendricks. "It's no surprise."

Clemens had an injured leg and back late in the season and was forced out of his start in Game 1 of the World Series against the Chicago White Sox after only two innings.

Houston's decision could lead to other teams trying to lure Clemens, such as the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox, two of his former clubs.

"If anybody calls, we'll listen," Hendricks said.

He doesn't expect Clemens to make a call about pitching next season for at least a month.

"Nothing has changed about his plan to decide in late January, early February," Hendricks said, adding that Clemens' performance in the WBC could play a part in the decision.

"I expect that will be a form of a litmus test to see how feels about playing mentally and physically," he said.

Love to get Clemens back, As you all know, Rog is one of my heros.

Sad to see that Houston wont even OFFER him arbitration. Now he cant go to Spring Training with his son or anything. Too bad, I never thought this would happen.

Come Home Roger, we miss you here!

Home? New York? I don't see how that makes sense.

if his home isnt boston (the team that started with and the team he pitched for the most in his career) than it would be houston.

You guys are taking that statement too literally, I was a semi-joke. Only reason I said it is because of how much Roger says he wants to be remembered as a Yankee, go into the Hall as a Yankee, etc... I was considering it his baseball home....just a joke sort of (dont really know how else to describe it)

If I was a baseball player, I'd definetly wear Red Sox cap in the HOF, even if I never played for them. I'm good at baseball, really good actually, but I'm to good at Basketball, so I gotta stick with that ;)

Jesus christ, of all the bad things Dan Duquette did, this tops all of it, he HAD to ruin the relationship between the Sox and Roger. Idk why but his wife once said of us fans "They treated him like Hitler".

More on the subject, if we only have 10 mill left then we would need to get rid of Manny to get him back here, otherwise we'll get outbid by the Yankees.

theres probaly a 5% chance he comes back to the redsox and a 10% chance he signs with the yankees. Hes 43 and wants to spend more time with his family (which live in texas). His agent already said that if he had to decide now whether or not he would retire, hed probaly would. If he goes anywhere it would be back to the astros in the spring or maybe the rangers make an offer for him.

With the lack of "activity" in this off-season for the Yankees and the fact that the Red Sox made a "big splash" already trading for Beckett I highly doubt Steinbrener sits by and lets the Red Sox out bid him for Clemens(thats if he even would go to either team).
