Cincinnati Reds are sending first baseman Sean Casey to Pittsburgh for right-handed pitcher Dave Williams. The deal could be announced later on tonight.

Good Young Lefty who I didnt think the Bucs would trade.

 

 

About a half-hour ago I heard this was close....I think it is stupid for the Pirates. They trade away one of their young arms for an overpaid, overrated 1Bman.

 

I guess this means the reds will retain all of their Outfielders now that they can move Dunn or Pena to 1st

exactly what I'm thinkin, the Bucs are in no position to win next year, so why trade your young guns for old power hitters who only take up a roster spot.

I would of really liked to see Sean Casey in Boston, he seems to have a good personality while not in your face all the time like Millar, he is a very consistent hitter and is good in the field. Maybe we can get Pittsburgh to trade him.

OK as I Pirates fan I can clear this up and explain why it's an excellent move for the Pirates.

 

Dave Williams is likely going to be pushed out of the rotation this year due to Van Benschoten and Burnett both coming back from injury, so he was expendable. Not to mention we have 5 capable(Burnett, Van Benschoten, Maholm) to great(Perez, Duke) lefty starters and a 6th on the way(Gorzelanny)

 

We have a 1B who was a late season call up, Brad Eldred. He needs 1 more year in AAA to cut down on his strikeouts, and improve his fielding.

 

Casey has 1 year left on his contract, so the Pirates will likely trade him at the deadline and call Eldred up for the remander of the season. I think if Casey is having a good year he could fetch something worth much more than Dave Williams.

 

So in the end this trade gives us time to let Eldred get ready, and will also return, hopefully, another piece more important to us than Dave Williams.

 

BTW Casey is not overrated in any way. If anything he's underrated.

Exactly! Most fans have ZERO idea that the Pirates are loaded with starting pitching talent, and the trading of Redman tothe Royals for a reliever SOLIDIFIES their staff. It's about god damn time Dave Littlefield has FINALLY delivered on his promises.

Players haven't passed their physicals yet so it's not quite official.

Redman being traded and the 2 Mill the Reds are reportedly sending us will mean we're only spending about 400 thousand more than we were before adding Casey. Look for more pitching to be on the move. Kip Wells, Josh Fogg, John Grabow. There hasn't been any talk yet but I could see the Pirates potentially either moving Sean Burnett, or John Vanbenschoten as well. Littlefield said only 3 pitchers are untouchable Oliver Perez, Zach Duke, and Paul Maholm.
