Who's going to play for Cuba? Jose Contreras and Livan Hernandez come to mind, but who else?

Neither or those two will be playing for Cuba. None of the players that defected are eligible to play for Cuba. Since Cuba and Castro are running the Cuban team, they're obviously not going to let defectors play. The Cuban team will be made up of the players on the Cuban National team. Other things include Majestic and MLB NOT providing Cuba with their uniforms, as the Cuban national team has a deal with Adidas for their uniforms.

No, he's gonna skip the Caribbean Series, which matches the winners of the winter leagues in the Dominican Republic, Puerto Rico, Venezuela and Mexico in a round-robin tournament. But he will still compete in the WBC.

 

If selected, Ortiz has agreed to play for the Dominican in the upcoming World Baseball Classic.

Every day, I see another star run across the screen, followed by "withdraws from the World Baseball Classic".

 

Is this a joke, or what? It is getting to be a daily event across the ESPN ticker...

I remember a lot of people saying no big names would play in the game. Then all of the sudden every big name signed up ... now slowly they're all pulling out. For anyone who is pulling out for a reason other than injury, or your MLB team not wanting you to play, was in it from the begining because it's a good PR move. Now it looks like they wanted to go ... but something came up ... and now they can't. But people will still remember that they were going to go ... it doesn't even matter that they're not going.

 

It's sad but most players just don't give a damn about baseball, and only play because they can get rich doing it. Much like Curtis Martin in football who used the football to get him into college, then to the NFL, and openly admits he doesn't like playing, and doesn't like football.

i wouldn't be shocked to see this tournament a one and done thing.....not saying it will be but you never know.

By chance, I could only get SEATS for the last 3 games of ST....so whoever plays in the WBC will be back w/ the team so I'll get to see Manny, Papi and Tek....sweeet!

 

I think I heard wrong though, I think Papi pulled out of the Carribbean Tourn.

 

I did hear that Gagne won't pitch for Canada, but Adam Stern will be playing for them.

I dozed on ordering tickets, so by the time I hit up the website the D.R. vs. Venezuela game on Tues. March 7th was sold out. I ended up getting tickets to Friday's D.R. vs. Australia matchup. I doubt the game is competitive, but there will be some beer drinkers in that crowd if the Aussie's travel to see their boys play, so it should be a hoot.

After this year they need to switch the Classic to November, following the World Series. Makes much more sense.
