Yankees, Farnsworth agree to 3-year, $17M contract

NEW YORK -- The New York Yankees agreed Friday to a $17 million, three-year contract with reliever Kyle Farnsworth, moving quickly to replace Tom Gordon as the primary setup man for Mariano Rivera.

A source told ESPN The Magazine's Buster Olney that the Rangers offered Farnsworth a three-year, $16.5 million contract with a vesting option that would have taken the deal to $21 million, plus incentives. Meanwhile, Atlanta proposed a three-year deal worth close to $15 million.

The hard-throwing righty, who will be 30 in April, split last season between the Detroit Tigers and Atlanta Braves, who acquired him at the July 31 trade deadline. He combined to go 1-1 with a 2.19 ERA in 72 games, striking out 87 in 70 innings and walking 27.

Farnsworth allowed only five home runs during the regular season, but had a meltdown in Game 4 of the playoffs, when Atlanta wasted a 6-1 lead. He gave up an eighth-inning grand slam to Lance Berkman and a tying homer to Brad Ausmus with two outs in the ninth, and Houston went on to win in 18 innings and earn a spot in the NL championship series.

Gordon, who spent the last two seasons as Rivera's main setup man in New York, reached a preliminary agreement late Thursday night with the Philadelphia Phillies on an $18 million, three-year contract.

New York had wanted to sign both Gordon and Farnsworth but would not offer more than a two-year deal to Gordon, a 38-year-old right-hander.

Prices for relievers have escalated this offseason, with B.J. Ryan getting a $47 million, five-year contract from Toronto and Billy Wagner accepting a $43 million, four-year offer from the New York Mets.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

This was bound to happen, and the overpaying for relievers continues.

Farnsworth can be as good as Gordon was this year, or he could be a flop.

Playing in Comerica and Turner field sure didn't hurt at all. His ERA was 2 whole runs worse on the road last year.

I prefer this then giving Gordon 3 years. There is still alot of work to be done.

I agree, though I would have liked to have Gordon back.

that whole thing about NL pitchers going to the AL really only applies to starters. Relievers in the NL dont face pitchers, they face pinch hitters. So its not like they get a free out or something.

Farnsworth is a good reliever and he will fill the void left by Tom Gordon. Good, albeit expensive, signing for the Yankees.

Yea, it should fill the void...but there still will be a void in the BP, I think we still need a few more trusty relievers..then were looking good.

YagMaster....idk...that name sounds familiar, were you in slugfest??

If you were....I was Maynard13 in that

well so far its looking like you could get my boy Mike Myers :(

He is a reliable reliever to get the lefty outs the team needs him to.

If he is signed, just hope Torre doesnt keep him in there to face righties.

Farnsworth isn't something to get all excited about. He is a mediocre reliver and he was the one who chocked in Game 6 against the Astros and let them tie the game. He is an incosistent pitcher with half decent stuff. So he doesn't make the Yankees any more dangerous.

Kyle Farnsworth > Tanyon Sturtze

Kyle Farnsworth > Scott Proctor

Thats why this is a good move.

I would really prefer if we fixed our remaining bullpen problems from within, but I don't really see it happening.

I agree, I would love to see Matt SMith on the opening day roster. BUt fact of the matter is, he's not proven yet, so I think the Yankees have an obligation to sign Myers (or someone else). But of Matt Smith outplays them in Spring Training, I give it to him all the way. Drop the other guy.
