Does anybody else think they might be re-grooming Pedroia for SS? He did play some games there at Pawtucket this year, and there was talk of the sox liking him better from shortstop because he has some arm for a little guy, and then they trade for a 2B. Who knows, maybe he just needs one more year of AAA

i would love to have Pedroia practicing ss, that way if mark loretta has a mark loretta year and if edgar has a 2005 year, we can trade edgar, resign loretta, and have a very promising, cheap ss coming up

he played SS at Arizona State and was drafted as a SS. I think he will start at Pawtucket playing either 2B or SS and Machado will play whichever pedroia doesnt play.

I think the only reason he was moved to 2b was because the organization already had Hanley Ramirez and Edgar Rentaria blocking him at SS. Hanley is already gone and Edgar might be following him out the door. I think it was Edes that speculated Cora and Rentaria could platoon at SS instead of 2b next year.

The trade gives Loretta a bonus for 2006, so he'll earn $3.75 million before becoming a free agent next winter. The Red Sox will use him as their second baseman and bat him second or maybe leadoff if Johnny Damon leaves. Loretta slipped to .280/.360/.347 during a 2005 season in which he was limited by a thumb injury. In 2004, he was one of the 10 or 12 best players in the NL while hitting .335/.391/.495. He should show a little more power at Fenway, making him an above average regular

this means renteria could be expendable

i actually like loretta providing he is completely healthy. when he went out of the lineup injured, san diego took a real dive. he can't possibly be worse than anything else we have.

Yea but the truth is, he isnt that great anymore. I was watching epsn news and an analyst said that nomar would be a utility infielder, at best.

just agree with whatever TV says, those guys know only marginally more than the average fan, and they get paid for it.

Actually most of the analysts on ESPN know less than the average fan. When you higher 2 mediocre ball players, a mediocre coach, and one of the worst GMs in the history of baseball what do you expect? ESPN flat out sucks. They have no more than 3 employees that know anything about sports. The rest are either mildly entertaining, crazy, or they flat out suck.

I could not agree more. Most of them are so rediculous but none are worse than Sean Salisbury for an NFL analyst. At least other stations have guys who were successful like Dan Marino, Boomer Esiason, Jim Kelly, etc....ESPN even has Steve Young and Ron Jackson.....but Sean Salisbury??? I hate it when he does an analysis on a QBs play....like he was anything special

I disagree. Ron Jaworski and Merrill Hoge do an excellent job analyzing film on NFL Playbook (or whatever the show they do is called), and neither of them will be on the steps in Canton, OH in a gold jacket any time soon. Success on the field doesn't necessarily correlate to success as an analyst.

You're right you don't have to be a great player to be a great analyst but you do have to have a knowledge of the sport. 1 Michael Irvin cancels out anyone good they have on the channel.

I totally agree with you Loretta is a good player who suffered through injuries last year. Why don't we try and shift Pedroia to Short for the 2007 season, sign a 1 year deal to a half descent SS and see what we get. That way we can keep Loretta and put Pedroia into the mix.

I dont think they will do that; keep in mind that hes only been out of college for a couple of years and the sox are probably not going to trade straight up for a 2b who is sure to start like they did with loretta if they wanted pedroia at 2nd. It doesnt make sense to shift Pedroia around AGAIN back to SS for a 2b who they only have on contract for one year. It seems to me that Loretta is here to give Pedroia some more time to develop.

2B and SS are not that different. Throughout local and HS baseball I switched between 2B and SS and the transition is fairly easy. A 2B has several responsibilities so assuming the responsibilities of the SS is not very difficult. The only change is on the double play and longer throws. As long as he has a strong arm he'll be fine moving to SS.

I'd be shocked if Pedroia doesn't start the season as Pawtucket's SS to show what he can do. I'd expect us to bring in a low cost veteran, like the rumored alex gonzalez or royce clayton, as a short term solution and if Pedroia shows hes capable defensively while also proving himself offensively in AAA then he wins the job either by midseason or the start of next season.
