I'm not placing much interest in this because it was such a small line in a paper I was reading but there is a chance the Phillies would look to shake things up and trade a core player. This guy is one of the best all around baseball players in the game today (defense, speed, power) he has it all.

I haven't put any real thought into a possible trade proposal or looked at the money but maybe a chance of switching core players in Manny for Abreu. If they want to dump Thome we could dump Foulke (big risk on both players). Bobby Abreu and Jim Thome for Manny Ramirez and Keith Foulke. I'm sure Manny would veto though cause he wants to go west coast style.

Just thought I would mention it

I am not sure if those trades would work. But if we could get him for some kind of a trade how about to replace nixon in right? I am not sure about his defense but a lineup of ortiz, manny, and abreu would be pretty interesting.

But if the Phils trade him it will most likely be for a real good starter or a closer. So I don't see the sox as a good match.

However Jim Thome interests me because you woulnd't have to give up a lot to get him and he has the potential to be a stud batting behind manny.

I think the Sox should try and get a player like Casey Kotchman or go for someone like darin erstad. Erstad may not be the best offensive player but he plays good defense and his attitude and how hard he plays every play would be a great influence on other sox players.

But I have faith that the Sox are looking at all there options and will hopefully find the right fit

you want jim thome? an aging player who is being shopped around because a rookie can play his position better than he can? bad idea.

Thome isn't just old he is injury prone, and also under the cloud of steroids. I don't want him anywhere near the Sox, or any other team for that matter.

you know, at first my gut reaction was the same, but i'd be willing to listen if the asking price was too attractive to pass up. assuming of course we get a guy like erstad to play first in case he's a bust, i'd seriously take a look at it if philly was to pay for most of his salary.

damn talk about improving the Jays offense

Inquirer columnist Jim Salisbury says new Phillies GM Pat Gillick has chatted with the Blue Jays about swapping Bobby Abreu for Vernon Wells and has begun preliminary talks with Seattle about a trade involving Jim Thome.

My bet would be that Wells really turns it on in Philly. Facing some weaker teams, easy ballpark, and lots of protection in that lineup. On the other hand, I think Abreu is the more complete player and would improve the Toronto offense more than Vernon Wells could.

Interesting move....time will tell who would come out better in that deal if it goes down

That would help the Jays a lot. Hillenbrand and Koskie will have great seasons not to mention Halliday. Abreu will make them even better.

trade ideas from foxsports.com

Bobby Abreu to the Red Sox.

Abreu's teammate, Phillies left fielder Pat Burrell, would make more sense as a right-handed hitting replacement for Ramirez, but Abreu is a superior offensive player. The Sox could acquire right-handed hitters like Cameron and Huff for Ramirez and also pursue other options. No one player could replace Ramirez, barring the addition of Konerko.

Abreu, 31, boasts a .411 career on-base percentage,.372 against left-handed pitching. His statistics would appeal to the Bill James element in the Red Sox's front office, though his remaining salary- $28 million combined in 2006 and '07, plus a $2 million buyout or $16 million option for'08, might not. Abreu also has a complete no-trade clause and might require an extension to waive it.

New Phillies GM Pat Gillick then could re-invest his savings in other players, the way White Sox GM Ken Williams did last off-season after trading outfielder Carlos Lee.

Why would the Phillies want to trade Abreu? Not to move first baseman Ryan Howard to the outfield, a ridiculous idea. But financial relief would be one motivator, and fair or not, some in the industry question whether Abreu is a winning player. Gillick, a strong believer in chemistry, maintained powerful clubs with the Mariners even after losing Ken Griffey Jr. and Alex Rodriguez. He would not be afraid to trade Abreu though, of course, any concerns about Abreu's makeup might also deter the Red Sox.

The Phillies surely would want one of the Red Sox's young pitchers in a package for Abreu. Red Sox right fielder Trot Nixon would figure to be part of such a deal, as might right-hander Matt Clement.

Bobby Abreu For Erik Bedard And Jay Gibbons http://www.mlbtraderumors.com

The Phillies are apparently talking to the Orioles about sending them Bobby Abreu for Erik Bedard and Jay Gibbons.

Abreu was the third-best hitting right fielder in the game in 2005, and the second-best in '04. He'll make $13MM in 2006 and is strangely unpopular in Philadelphia. Abreu is also on the hook for $15MM in 2007 with a $16MM club option for 2008. The '08 option has a $2MM buyout attached. Abreu will be 32 when the '06 season begins and may be ticketed for the Hall of Fame.

Lefty Erik Bedard has been plagued by injuries, undergoing Tommy John surgery and a sprained knee ligament. He's still only 26 and is many years away from free agency. Bedard improved upon his control somewhat in 2005, and had a nice showing in 24 starts. He flashed his ace potential before the All-Star break, going 5-1 with a 2.08 ERA. Interestingly, Bedard has Bob Gibson (circa 1962) buried among his otherwise pedestrian comparables.

Jay Gibbons is a young, powerful right fielder who would be an adequate replacement for Abreu. He'll be 29 when the '06 season starts and made a little less than $3MM last year. Gibbons slugged .516 in 2005, second only to Vladimir Guerrero among regular right fielders. While comparable to Abreu in power, Gibbons has far less plate discipline and a worse health record.

i think if we lose manny, which we prolly are, we should be alot more involved in this

Completely agree. With all the crappy trade scenarios for Manny i think one good way to go about it is tell the Mets We'd do Milledge plus a guy like Abreu for Manny if they can find a way to trade for Abreau without giving up Milledge. The Phillies may be reluctant getting involved in helping the Mets get Manny though.

I don't think that the phillies would have any interest in trading Abreu here for Clement or Nixon. I don't think throwing youkilis in makes it any more attractive to do so either. Throwing Abe Alvarez in might make it less attractive for them, a half blind pitcher who tops out at like 83. Kidding, but seriously, to land abreu would take much more. If they rejected Wells for Abreu, they won't accept youk and clements contract and nixons bad back all in one deal. Break it down into pieces though and something could work out.

Perhaps a package like Brandon Moss, Jed Lowrie and Clement could work. We won't give up any more untouchables, like lester, delcarmen, pedroia, etc. but is Edgar Martinez untouchable? Bullpen pitchers are available regularly, and if we can move Arroyo into the pen perhaps we could use Martinez as a heft bargaining chip.

i saw that to. I dont trust the New York papers though because they are never right. If this is true, it is the best proposed trade yet. Abreu is the best replacement for manny available unless the angels decide theyd give up Vlad.

Why trade Manny for Abreu. You can get so much more than Abreu for a guy like Manny. I don't see this deal going down at all.

manny for abreu and burrell.. there both on the trading block. Burell could help us at first and abreu in the OF.

the phillies are defenitaly going to want someone else if we want burell too, and are the salaries equal? how long are abreu and burell into their contracts?
