I don't know if anyone has been keeping track but 24 year old David Murphy is really starting to turn it on in the Arizona Fall League. He is now batting .319/.364/.528. As far as I know his hitting is the only thing stopping him from making a run to be on a major league team. I hear he is a fantastic defensive outfielder and if he can get his swing under control and put up numbers he could become our top OF prospect. It is possible Murphy could be our next Trot Nixon.

David Murphy went 3-for-5 with a triple and two runs scored today for the Saguaros of the AFL.

Murphy is batting .319/.364/.528 in 72 at-bats. He started off 3-for-21, so he's played very well the last three weeks.

Murphy hits a 2-run home run in his 1st Triple A at bat
The kid has deceptive power. I saw him hit 2 Homers in ST with a very easy swing that looked like he was just trying to make contact.

There's something about Portland( Hanley, Murphy ) that makes very good prospect look mediocre .

Murphy = Future .280, 15-20hr type :)

2-4 with a home run and a walk for pawsox tonight. .339avg, 1.083 ops in 55 ab since being called up to AAA ...
We desperately need a 4th OF. It would be better if he was a righty, but he can chase down flies, and if he can hit a little, he can spell Manny when his Hammies act up and Nixon when his back acts up.

Gabe Kapler is set to come back by late this month. New reports on Wily Mo Pena have him coming back around the all-star break. Cant wait to have this outfield

Manny

Coco

Trot

Gabe

Wily Mo

Good to hear that David Murphy is doing very well this season, he could be valuable to the Sox as trade bait.

I think Murphy will be our 4th OF next year, seeing some time in RF when Willy Mo needs a day off.

Manny

Coco

Willy Mo

Murphy

Kapler (if he comes back and is healthy next year)

I could see that, plus he can play all 3 OF positions, and could be a late inning defensive replacement.

Ellsbury is much, much better then Murphy. Murphy is good, but not better then Wily Mo, Coco or Manny I see Murphy as a 4th outfielder for us in the future. When Manny's contract is up this is what I would like to see if we let Manny walk:

Wily Mo

Ellsbury

Coco

Murphy as the 4th outfielder

Murphy hits his third HR of the year as the PawSox beat Richmond 5-2.

Van Buren struck out two for the save, yet it only counts as one, because he fanned Crespo.

True because some team might see him as a potential starting outfielder. We're all set here, that he would just be a reserve on the bench.

With Crisp (26), Willy Mo (24) and Ellsbury (22), Murphy has no spot in the starting OF of the future. Especially with the Sox drafting Place. Murphy would be a pretty good OF to have on the bench tho.

I have just as much AB's as Jason Place does in professional baseball. Let's let the guy show us what he can do, before we annoint him better than Murphy.

PawSox outfielder David Murphy has been selected as the International League’s Player of the Week for June 5-11. In seven games last week, he batted .400 (10-for-25) with three doubles, two triples, two homers and eight RBIs. Murphy has a .339 average with three homers and 13 RBIs in 16 games with Pawtucket since his promotion from Portland.

True, but he has more talent potential than Murphy does at this point. I also forgot about Soto on that list of young OF.

We are loaded with decent outfield talent for the future:

Coco Crisp

Willy Mo Pena

Adam Stern

David Murphy

Jacoby Ellsbury

Luis Soto

Brandon Moss (he may still come out of his struggles)

...however, I'm not sure how the Red Sox will function when it comes time for these guys to make a stab at the majors. Right now David Murphy (24), Dustin Pedroia, and Adam Stern are the most ML ready. We obviously don't have a spot for a couple of those so I would look for them to be traded.

I am not so sure I would term this group as loaded with talent.

I'd say about four of those players have starter potentials. The rest are bench players.

Coco Crisp--starter

Willy Mo Pena--starter

Adam Stern--bench player

David Murphy--could start for a bad time or be a good 4th OF

Jacoby Ellsbury--starter

Luis Soto--starter

Brandon Moss--same as Murphy

There was speculation at baseballprospectus.com that the Sox may be showcasing Murphy. If he keeps hitting like this, the Sox could get great value for him. If you look at his AA stats, they weren't jaw dropping, so there wasn't a really good reason to promote him. About Moss, I think Murphy is much better, I think Moss won't be more then a 5th outfielder if his bat doesn't come around soon. I wouldn't be surprised to see the Sox package him in a deal around the deadline. Or maybe the Sox want to trade Murphy, not Moss. The reason for that thought is that they didn't promote him, but I don't think his AA stats were as good as Murphy's.

Yeah, there was good reason to promote him. He started the season in a terrible slump, but when he pulled out of it, he was white hot. I think the split is from like April 20 on. Three hot weeks for a player in his second year at a level warrants a promotion.
