Yankees hire Bowa

With Joe Torre having finally decided to return to the Yankees in 2006, he moved quickly to overhaul his support staff, hiring Larry Bowa as the Yankees' new third base coach. According to a major league executive, Bowa agreed to a one-year, $500,000 contract Thursday afternoon.

Bowa's hiring is a controversial one, since he replaces Luis Sojo, who was popular with the club's Spanish-speaking players. It is unclear whether Sojo will be retained in any capacity. But Torre called Bowa directly Thursday, indicating the manager may indeed have the input he was promised by George Steinbrenner.

Once Bowa expressed interest, general manager Brian Cashman followed up with a second call, after which the deal was quickly finalized. Cashman's involvement with Bowa's hiring may indicate he's leaning toward reenlisting with the Yankees as well.

Although the GM continues to tell industry peers he's still undecided, there's a growing consensus that Cashman's return is all but assured now. An announcement will come next week, well before the Oct. 31 deadline before his contract expires.

Bowa, known for his intense, driven personality, worked part of last season as an ESPN analyst. His last managerial job was with the Phillies, from 2001 until the last two games of the 2004 season.

Sources say Lee Mazzilli, who was fired as the Orioles' manager midway through the 2005 season, is also being strongly considered to join Torre's coaching ranks.

woahh...ive been following this all day, but when I got home about 3 i fell asleep and just woke up, looks like i missed it all.

...........good move, Larry Bowa has been credited as "the best 3rd base coach in the majors" and I would love to have him there. Its likely that Sojo will move over to first and White will be booted, but I would like to leave both White and Sojo on the staff, maybe let Sojo coach first and let WHite play the Rob Thompson/Rich Monteolone "special instructor" role.
