Blue Jays Trying to Bust NY's Playoff Bubble

Randy Johnson has learned pretty quickly that you're only as good as your last start in New York. That's why he'll try to avoid a letdown following his biggest win as a Yankee when New York opens a three-game series with the Toronto Blue Jays at the Rogers Centre. Johnson, acquired this past offseason to help New York bounce back from last October's ALCS collapse to Boston, had not lived up to his billing as one of the sport's most dominant and intimidating pitchers -- until Sunday. The 42-year-old left-hander pitched seven innings of one-hit ball in a 1-0 victory over the Red Sox, giving New York the decisive game of its weekend set with the AL East leaders.

Johnson struck out eight and walked two, and probably could have gone the distance if not for a cramp in his left calf. The win was the third in a row for Johnson, who appears to be heating up when the Yankees need him most.

"That's the pitcher that everybody expected, and that's the pitcher that I'd expected,'' said Johnson, who improved to 4-0 against the Red Sox this season. Johnson is 10-8 against the rest of the AL, including an 0-2 mark with a 4.85 ERA in two starts against the Blue Jays this year. The Yankees need the Big Unit to come up big in the series opener after they swept three games in Tampa Bay to climb within 1 1/2 games of first-place Boston in the East and a half-game behind Cleveland in the wild-card race. The Yankees have made 10 consecutive postseason appearances, winning the East in each of the previous seven years.

Rookie Robinson Cano hit a grand slam and Alex Rodriguez added a two-run shot, his 42nd of the year, as New York rallied past Tampa Bay 9-5 in Thursday's series finale. Cano added an RBI triple to give him a career-high five RBIs, and Bubba Crosby had a career-high three hits and two RBIs for the Yankees, who have won four in a row. The Blue Jays had Thursday off after dropping two of three to Boston, including Wednesday's 5-3 defeat. Shea Hillenbrand drove in a pair of runs for Toronto, which has lost three of four and is 1-2 on a 10-game homestand.

score is now 3-2 from John Flaherty hitting a double to drive in Robinson Cano. Jeter was later hit by pitch (was this intentional by Bush from Reed Johnson getting hit in the 1st inning or just by accident?)

Dave Bush, 2 innings: 39 pitches, 3 Hits, 2 Runs, 1 Walk, 1 K

I'm so angry right now. These umpires are f***ing ridicules it cant be put into words. They think they are just as big as the players on the field. No one comes to the game to see them. Its a f***ing pennant, every pitch matters, you have to have thicker skin then that. Grow up and call a good game which the HP ump wasnt doing anyway.

Wow these annoncers and everyone complaining about this ejection are ridiculous. You have no idea what Randy said to the ump. Technically I believe they are allowed to toss you for any profanity, so all he had to do was say f***, and the ejection was justified. So until we know why he was ejected I don't think it's fair for you guys, and these annoncers, to get on the umpire.

Exactly! The ump felt his little (obviously) ego being challenged so he threw a hissy fit. Disgusting. Umpires are like judges...a damn monopoly of power.

I hope this team is as angry as I am.

You have no idea what was said. How can you make false assumptions about the umps ego?

The Toronto crew picked up what he said and he said "You missed the one before too" This is according to the Toronto broadcasters not YES. Is that grounds for being kicked out?

How could they hear what he said? And how on earth do you have RSN?

Syuzan Waldman asked the Toronto booth during the break and they cought what he said on camra. I'm the messenger.

Well complaining about calls is basis for ejection. So it's justified.

see how we felt when David Wells was ejected for saying something to the umpire, come to think of it, it was against the Blue Jays

I agreed with Wells on that one also. I dont feel you should be ejected from games ESP games like this unless you pull something outragous.
