You won't back Gomes off. He plays with a chip on his shoulder. Actually, most of the D-Ray team does.

Does anyone remember Major League when Willie Mays Hayes tried to steal 2nd and he was out by a mile and he didnt even make it to the bag? Well we just saw that in the Yankee game as Jason Giambi tried to extend a single into a double. Yes Jason Giambi.

Of course you wont back Gomes off the plate with that big elbow pad that he has. Anyone could have a chip on there shoulder when they hit with that. RJ should pull a Clemens and hit him on that pad all night (Just in case you dont know....Roger hit Barry Bonds twice on the elbow pad when Bonds came to Yankee Stadium in 02)

Good for Roger, why don't you bake him some cupcakes. Gomes has some fire. Pad or no pad, he's not the type of guy to stop digging in.

Give me a recipe and I will. Fact of the matter is Gomes is among the league leaders in HBP's. Why? because hes not afraid to get hit. Why? because chances are he wont get hurt. Why? Because he has the huge elbow pad on. You throw one up and in and no matter who you are you will get a wake up call and you will not be hanging over the plate. Frank Robinson is the only player i've ever heard of to get knocked down and dig an even bigger hole and hes not Frank.

Thank you Mr. "I explain way too f***ing much". I'm aware of the benefit of the pad. He's going to be wearing it and that won't change. So if you can't scare him, as you say, what is the benefit of throwing at him? Free baserunners for the Rays?

I never said he'd dig in more, just that you wouldn't back him up.

That is so untrue it isn't funny. I've seen several players that hug the plate (Ortiz, Everett, Sheff) get brushed, get pissed, hold their ground, and drill the next ball into the seats. The only person I've seen it have a noticeable effect on in recent memory was Matsui after game 3/4(?) in last year's ALCS.

Who said you HAVE TO hit him. Throw one near the ear hole and hes not leaning out over the plate. As far as I'm concered if you have an elbow pad on you then the chip on your shoulder gets much larger. All I'm saying is take a page out of the Pedro Martinez textbook.

I'm talking about legends and Gomes isnt even on there level anyway.

EDIT: Game 4 btw

Tom Gordon needs a new nickname, I'm thinking the "Anti - W." It's an almost certainty that if he goes out there with the tying run anywhere near home, the starter is not going to be getting a W.

You don't have to be a legend to have that attitude. Its a state of mind and isn't a function of ability. I've watched a lot of D-Ray games this year and Gomes is a tough nut.

and all I'm saying is hes a tough guy with an elbow pad on. I admire his courage though, he came back from a heart problem and look where he is now.
