I don't think you'll want Damon back to much when you see the length and money he's looking for on his next contract. If you're complaining about Manny being overpaid just wait.

what a way to break out of a slump, first inning off of yanks other new ace chacon working a full count on 2 outs and blasting one off to left field, give Sox the lead theyd never relinquish ;) overall he had 3 RBIs, HR with raking an RBI single in the 4th. September has always been the best month for Manny, hopefully this is the start of great offense by him in this pennant push...

well yes that was yesterdays game. We are talking about todays game where he hit hard off of yankees pitching, your point being?...

My point being don't be surprised if in the not too distant future, maybe next year, we see him declining. He may not be on the sox next year though.

There isn't any evidence I can find that supports a claim that age slows down a players bat. Manny is only 33, and there are several players either over 40 or close to it that can still catch up to MLB fastballs.

Yes, he has been behind on some pitches during his little slump, but that has nothing to do with age. Players go through stretches where they aren't picking the ball up as well, but good players usually break out of that situation. Manny is one of the most prolific and productive hitters of his era. He will have hot streaks and cold streaks, but he will, as long as he stays healthy, be a pain in the ass for MLB pitchers for years to come.

Just look at bernie. His dropoff from 03 to 04 was definitely due to age. I agree this slump doesn't have anything to do with age, but I think he's nearing the end of his prime.

I don't think Bernie's offensive dropoff can be explained by age. He is still hitting for comparable power to previous years (just a lot less AB's now). I think it has more to do with being dropped down in the batting order (those FA sluggers are going to fill the heart of the lineup) and a change of approach at the plate. If you look at his career numbers, his strikeouts and walks are significantly lower than during his best years. That, to me, suggests that he has expanded his strikezone and is swinging at more pitchers pitches near the edge of the strikezone. Beyond a statistical analysis, I have noticed that he seems less patient at the plate than he was a few years ago.

He's long past his prime, I mean he's near the end of his career, but I think you can definitly contribute his offensive dropoff to age.

Let's not go drawing those lines so closely. Bernie is 37, Manny is 33 ... theres a world of different between those ages.

I still don't see this power slide that everyone sees Manny having. I understand he's only hit 1 HR is so many weeks, but he's still on pace to hit just about his average number of HRs. His SLG % is down a little but it's far from terrible. I dunno I think this whole thing is being over hyped.
