Boomer out to suspend O's bats

Baltimore (64-71) at Boston (79-55), 2:05 p.m. ET

For the second consecutive Sunday, David Wells will take the mound for the Red Sox. Both the pitcher and the team are looking for the same result, as Wells led Boston to victory exactly one week ago.

This is the first time he has pitched since then, thanks to a six-game suspension that caused Wells to utter some inflammatory statements regarding Major League Baseball.

But Wells apologized, and now he looks forward to pitching again. He'll need to be in top form, as Orioles right-hander Rodrigo Lopez has made it a habit of pitching superb games against the Red Sox.

"Rodrigo Lopez is pitching and he's been tough on us since I've been here in '03," said Red Sox first baseman Kevin Millar. "We've got to find a way to get to him and find a way to have his 'B' game against us instead of his 'A' game."

Pitching matchup

BAL: RHP Rodrigo Lopez

• 13-8, 4.85 ERA in 2005

• 2-1, 2.96 ERA vs. BOS in 2005

BOS: LHP David Wells

• 11-6, 4.44 ERA in 2005

• 1-2, 4.58 ERA vs. BAL in 2005

Player to watch

It's a safe bet that John Olerud will start at first base on Sunday, as he is 9-for-21 lifetime against Lopez, while Millar is 5-for-28.

Quotable

"[Mike] Timlin's been our best pitcher the past couple of years, including this year." -- Johnny Damon

Quick hits

The Red Sox are 7-2 as they head into the home stretch of this 14-game homestand. ... David Ortiz leads the Major Leagues with 119 RBIs. ... Edgar Renteria is hitting .357 in his last 14 games. ... The Red Sox have made seven errors in their last four games. ... Bill Mueller is hitting .350 with runners in scoring position.

What's up with Tek?

I wonder if they will give Tek off tomorrow as well in order to give him 3 days rest with Wake to pitch on Tuesday?

Posted
I think they are just giving him the day off since it is a day game following 2 night games. I'd be surprised if he isn't catching Schilling tomorrow.

It's September and Tito is still resting starters? And he's resting a player who's had every 5th day off this season. And to top it off he's resting Millar. The Blonde Bomber finally gets his s*** together at the plate and Tito gives him a day off.

Tito pretty much has to, the Sox are in the midst of playing 30 straight games--The starters need to be at full health as possible

Monday was supposed to be an off day, so I'm sure he's trying to squeeze an extra off day in for everyone. Millar has poor career #'s against Lopez, and Olerud is a lefty against the right-handed pitcher. Makes good sense to me.

I really don't buy into the argument that Tito has to rest starters. Zito is pitching tonight and this is an opportunity to put more distance on from the MFY. How many starters will Torre rest tonight, oe even LaRussa?

Gibbons pulled that out of his ASS. On the replay, his head was looking out toward left-field when he hit the ball.

Mosox, they are people not robots. Get over it.
