What is up with renteria? HE LEADS THE LEAGUE IN ERRORS! His production is average and his fielding sucks! I'm not so sure we should have given renteria the 4 year 40 million dollar contract. He is not worth it. He almost cost the sox the game tonight when he bobbled an easy grounder! I think this was a mistake by Theo signing this guy.

I don't. I've liked Renteria from the beginning. His errors are a concern, but his production has been good. He'll be great for the next few years.

Please, please, please don't turn this place into the YES boards (the Yankee Entertainment Station message boards). There are currently at least two Renteria threads where you can vent your frustration. Over at YES, at the end of each Yankee loss, there are 20+ threads created complaining about the offense, the defense, Torre, Stottlemyer* (sp?), Mattingly, Steinbrenner, etc. Please look beyond the first page to ensure that you are creating a unique thread.

EDIT: See!

Why does Renterria take so much crap? He plays the game the right way, he hustles, he runs, he bunts, he can hit and run and he has great range. His offensive numbers are right around his career averages. You know, it wasnt long ago when Boston fans adored a SS (Nomar) who year in and year out made 25+ errors a season. Would you rather have him around for 14 million a season sitting on the DL? Would you rather have Cabrera who has produced nothing from the dish this season? I mean, christ....the guy even said he would be willing to change his position to make room for Hanley when his time comes. He is an ultimate professional who thinks of team before himself. What will it take for Boston fans to embrace the quiet class act that Renterria is?

Renteria has been good, I don't know what you are talking about. Like I said before Tejada led the league with 20 something errors last year and he was in discussions for the MVP award.

lay off rent, he has really cut down on his errors lately.

For the record. Renterria has 12 Win shares this season. Cabrera has 11.

What is really disturbing is the constant sanctimonious complaining about complaining. Plus, the constant attempts to define what a real fan is..part of being a fan for some of us is liking and dis-liking some players its as simple as that. For others its liking everyone. Big Deal. Stop with the judgemental crap and just state your piece about the particular topic and spare us the lectures. If poeple want to worry about edgars defense fine, that doesnt mean they are less a fan than anyone else. I dont agree with them but i certainly dont think twice about their right to say anything.

We all want the sox to win, isnt that the point. some people cheer..some people boo...so what.

In this case, however, I have never said a bad word about renteria and probably wont.

He is, as my friend sweet chin, says a class act and I respect him enormously. He gets clutch hits..he runs the bases better the most guys, has a few steals and his average has been going up and up all season and he has had a 20+ error season before and is still one of the best SS's in the game. he has tremendous range and gets to balls that most guys wont, and as a result he gets some errors.Big deal, we won right?

The comparisons to OC are pointless. Renteria is a much better playere and we are fortunate to have him.

rent has come around with the offense numbers and could be a .300 hitter by season's end. I just think also he had to get used to the quirky dimensions of the park, afterall he only had played at Fenway several times before this season. The errors have mostly come from him just charging the ball too much at times

His fielding errors are a concern, but his production has been actually good since late May. He struggled in April and most of May, so his Bat Ave=.288, and his OBP=.348 only.

I like him a lot better than that "flamboyant Nomar". Most of his fielding errors are because he is rushing to deliver the ball prematurely. He is trying to do too much.

The solution to these problems is for the manager to calm him down, something I am not sure if his manager is doing.

At least he does not have "swing problems".

I hope he calms down during the playoffs, there is no room for errors then.

Renteris does a great job as a #2 hitter. He gets to balls that most guys won't and didn't Tejada lead the league in errors two years ago? Would sigining him be a mistake?

I don't why so many people bash on this guy. Manny makes worse errors than this guy and no one bashes on him about his Fielding when he is clearly a DH and not a LF but because the guy hits 30 + HR's and drives in 100+ none says nething. Well last time i checked Renteria has been driving in his fair share of runs this year. And just because he makes errors and doesn't hit 30 Hr's doesn't mean he is a bad choice as SS. This guy makes plays that half the SS in the leagues would never make. I don't see why people need to bash Rent so much.

Errors are an overrated stat. He makes a ton of "range errors" going for balls a lot of other short stops would give up on. I've seen him make a lot fof those. He also is playing in parks hes never played in before, so hes not used to it. I know that when you play at different fields it takes time to get used to it and at the major league level it probably takes some time as well. When cabrera first came over last season, he wasn't the best either, remember how he kicked the ball away that lost us that first game he played in? He made a lot of errors like that but picked it up pretty quick. Renteria will pick it up, he'll get used to AL ball parks and you'll realize that this guy makes plays most guys don't. He gets to balls that most guys don't, makes throws that most guys can't, he's solid. He's a beast.

I didn't like Edgar to start the year, but the more i watch him play, the more i respect him. He is a above average defensive short stop, he has really cut down his errors, and he is very offensively sound, this was not a mistake by Theo.

A real fan does not bash a player only to jump back on his bandwagon again, only to hop back off and stab him in the back ... only to jump back on. You're either with a guy or your not. You can't pick and chose when you're going to cheer for a player. It's fine to question a players motives, or his talent after a tough patch. I'm fine with that, but when you completely throw someone under the bus, and then all the sudden you start cheering for them when they turn it around pisses me off to a new level. It's the very definition of being a fairweather fan.

The funny thing about Rents is that he had like 20 errors 2 months ago ... now he has 24. He's improved every area of his game over the last few months ... now is not the time to start bashing him again.

I'm going to go off topic for a second, because I have liked renteria from the start and have always and am glad he has come around. So I have not been at all off again on again.

I am just curious though why that defines a real fan..?

I was always under the impression fairweather fans are those that show up when a team is winning and disapppear when a team loses.

I am not quite sure why liking, disliking or booing any one guy defines your fan-dom? as I have said before as long as you want the sox to win..who cares what anyone says. I mean I have been extraordinarily vocal about my distaste for kevin millar, but now he is hitting I still dont like him as a player or his big yapper and hijinks...but I cheer if he hits a homerun, how does that make me any less of a fan. For a rare post I am not trying to be argumentative or stir anything up, I promise, but I'm just curious why you all think this way. Historically the fans around this town have been tough, they booed ted williams, Yaz, rice you name it at some point in their careers a lot of very popular players have gotten jeered. so what...?The bottom line is as long as you're a sox fan...you're okay.

That's pretty much exactly what I said except this pertains to players and not a whole team. It's hard to disappear on a player so people bash them instead, but the second they turn it around they're behind them.
