His numbers this year are decent and hopefully he can help the pen. He was once a top 100 prospect. I don't see how this can hurt at this point anyway with our bullpen being as overused and bad as it's been lately.

Rotoworld says he has a live arm that can set up/eat innings in the pen. Low risk (e.g better than Remlinger), high reward.

Remember, Harville was one of the Astros pitchers involved in the no-hitter vs. the Yankees a couple of seasons ago

Claiming him off waivers doesn't mean he's on the team. If we have claimed him, and Houston doesn't recall him, and nobody with higher rights to him (since he's from the NL, NL teams with weak records get first shot at him, then AL), then he is on the team.

Harville was DFA'd, so this is a different situation I believe. I know that he is officially a member of the Red Sox organization though.

Oh, I didn't research it. So many waiver wire claim threads already that I figured this fell into the same category.

Harville has been pretty much lights out in his last 15.2 innings with the Astros giving up just 2 runs

Which makes you a little curious as to why they would just release him... maybe a trade is in the works that hasn't been announced yet?

dude, cmon i was just pointing out what he has done-- who knows maybe a "nomar" type trade deal is in place

I wouldn't be surprised. Especially, with the the early reports on Foulke and the most recent news on Hansen ( sore arm ).

Boston.com has just indicated Foulke is in place to come back Sept 1. In other news Chad Harville will join the team for tonight's game, and don the #43. maybe alvarez gets moved back down

That's a great number to have especially after it's last owner.

He is a righty correct??

I think I'm just getting really really really really frustrated with the guys in the bullpen. Just when Abe Alvarez does well he stinks the next day. Papelbon looks good in the rotation then struggles in the bullpen. Keith Foulke, Matt Mantei, Alan Embree, Mike Remlinger, Cla Meredith, Curt Schilling, Blaine Neal, John Halama....FIND A FREAKIN SOLUTION ALREADY

After claiming right-handed reliever Chad Harville off waivers from the Astros on Monday, the Red Sox expect the pitcher to arrive on Thursday.

What do they like about Harville?

"He's got a great arm. He brings velocity to the table, mid-90s [mph]," said Epstein. "Hard slider that will be a good pitch for him at times. He's been inconsistent some in his Major League career, but he's been on a hot stretch of late. He's performed very well over the last 12 games.

"The way our bullpen has been, this will be a good opportunity for us. If he gets on a roll, and throws strikes, he has a chance to really help us. We don't have a lot of strikeout-type stuff up and down our 'pen. This is a chance to add a guy with a great arm."
