I'd like to see a way to get Delcarmen and Hansen onto the roster BEFORE 9/1 so they can pitch in the playoffs if they do well in September.

Mantei is on the 60-day DL and Miller is on the 15-day. I think they may shut Miller down for the year. If they are going to shut him down for the year, then they will put him on the 60-day before September 1. This gives the Sox a chance to replace their playoff eligibility with anyone in the system (as long as they are in the system by August 31).

Now, before anyone goes and pencils them in, there are is something to consider. We are in the middle of a tight pennant race, and the WC race is very tight too. Therefore, none of the games are "throw away" games where you can experiment with young talent. Tito has already shown that he doesn't really like to use rookies that much (see Delcarmen throwing very well in his debut, then not getting the ball again for over a week). If Hansen and Delcarmen are given opportunities, and if they perform well, then the Miller and Mantei injuries would allow them to be eligible for the playoffs.

Great all our minor leaguers get injured right before we call them up. Fantastic.

That's a bit Draconion isn't it. Hansen may still come up ( I'd rather have the FO be may it safe ). Shoppach's injury has not been diagnosed yet, and I doubt he would very much time in a tight play-off run.

It was a bit of sarcasm, but it just seems like our luck with injuries have been horrible as of late.

Shawn Wooten this season for the Paw Sox has had committed 9 errors in 109 games. And has 109 hits in 408 at bats (.257 avg) 19 Doubles, 15 HRs, 58 RBIs, 42 Runs scored, 34 Walks, 71 Ks with an OBP of .414

left-handed Matt Perisho (a former Marlin) has been doing extremely well since joining the Paw Sox in 13 games (13 innings) has a 2-0 record with a 2.08 ERA giving up 3 runs on 6 hits, 6 Walks, 7 Ks

right handed Chad Harville, our new #43, has been lights out since the All Star break in 14 games (15.1 innings) an 0-2 record with a 1.76 ERA giving up 3 runs on 8 hits, 6 Walks, 12 Ks

this just in Alejandro Machado will also join the team tonight, a 23 year old infielder. He is having a great season in Pawtucket, in 117 games has had 115 hits in 383 at bats (.300 avg) 17 Doubles, 2 Triples, 3 HRs, 43 RBIs, 60 Runs scored, 32 Walks, 47 Ks, 21 SBs. He has an obp of .359 and on defense has made 7 errors

Sounds like a quartet that could really help us out. Having Harville and Perisho as warm bodies in the bullpen certainly helps, and like TEK_ME_etc said we can replace any pitcher who's on the DL with anyone in the SYSTEM. It's the same loophole (I believe) that allowed K-Rod to join the Angels in 2002.

Having a third catcher is a luxury you can't afford with a 25 man roster, but Wooten's availability could be key in a pennant race. I think often times the team doesn't put Varitek into games that Mirabelli starts because then you leave yourself with no options if Varitek gets hurt.... but with that third guy, you could pinch hit for Mirabelli and pinch run for Varitek in the same inning if you needed to because you've got Wooten waiting on the bench to catch. VERY important.

Machado I don't see getting a lot of playing time, it seems Graffanino/Cora/Renteria have the middle taken care of, but at least he looks like a good base stealer, which is something we haven't had since Dave Roberts. Should be invaluable down the stretch.

There will be more additions once Pawtucket's season is over. No doubt DiNardo, Alvarez, and Delcarmen will join the staff in mid-september, and I wouldn't be surprised to see at least a cameo from Hanley Ramirez and/or Dustin Pedroia after their seasons end. Of course, adding Pedroia would require a roster move, so that's a lot less likely.

after rumors abound, Boston.com has just released the final confirmed call ups for Sept 1: Chad Harville will also be joining the team today

Moving on up

Teams can expand 25-man rosters to as many as 40 today, and the Sox today are expected to add three players from Triple A Pawtucket: righthander Matt Perisho (12 games, 2.13 ERA), infielder Alejandro Machado (.303, 21 steals in 26 attempts), and lefthander Lenny DiNardo. DiNardo last started Sunday for Pawtucket, meaning he'd be available to pitch in Wells's spot in the rotation tomorrow on normal rest. Manny Delcarmen, optioned back to Pawtucket Tuesday night, must wait until Sept. 6 -- the day after Pawtucket's season ends -- to be recalled.

Kelly Shoppach also would have gotten a call today, if he hadn't been injured on a play at the plate Tuesday night in Ottawa. Shoppach stuck out his left leg, steered Tim Raines Jr. off the plate, and applied the tag for the out. But Shoppach sustained a left ankle sprain in the process. He experienced swelling in the ankle and, as of yesterday afternoon, was listed as day-to-day. The Sox could call up Shawn Wooten as a third catcher, though Wooten isn't on the 40-man roster.

of course more callups will follow during this month

With Pawtucket's season ending today, the Sox might be in the market for a few more callups. Look for catcher Kelly Shoppach (as soon as he recovers from an ankle sprain), Manny Delcarmen, and possibly second baseman Dustin Pedroia to join the major league team. Sox general manager Theo Epstein said he expects one or two more callups by tomorrow
