Papelbon finishes four-game set

Red Sox (70-51) at Angels (71-52), 4:05 p.m. ET

A day after the Red Sox were positively perplexed by a rookie pitcher, they will throw one at the Angels, hoping for the same result.

Ervin Santana baffled Boston en route to a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. The Red Sox will trot out the promising young arm of Jonathan Papelbon in Sunday's series finale.

This is Papelbon's third Major League start, and he's been impressive in the first two. He is coming off a no-decision against the Tigers, a start in which he surrendered six hits and two runs over five innings while striking out six.

The Red Sox, who hold a three-game lead over the Yankees in the American League East, need a win in this one to salvage a split in the four-game series.

Pitching matchup

BOS: RHP Jonathan Papelbon

• 0-0, 3.48 ERA in 2005

• First career appearance vs. LAA

LAA: RHP Paul Byrd

• 9-7, 3.88 ERA in 2005

• First appearance vs. BOS in 2005

Player to watch

Red Sox DH David Ortiz can be held down for only so long. After going 1-for-12 in the first three games of this series, Ortiz could be primed to break out in this one.

Quotable

"These guys are great pitchers. They're hitting their spots. They're a championship-caliber team. When you face teams like that, those teams know how to pitch, play defense, play small ball, long ball. They're a very good team, and you're seeing it right now." -- Johnny Damon, on the Angels

Quick hits

After scoring five runs or more in nine consecutive games, the Red Sox have scored under five runs in the first three games of this series. ... Damon has hit safely in 20 of his last 21 games. ... While Edgar Renteria continues to be in a prolonged home run drought (196 at-bats), he has 13 RBIs in his last 19 games. ... Bill Mueller is hitting .428 (9-for-21) on this road trip.

Papelbon has been impressive in his first two Major League outings, striking out 13 batters in 10 1/3 innings. In his last start, a no-decision against the Tigers, Papelbon held Detroit scoreless over four innings before allowing two runs in the fifth. Aside from throwing heat in the mid-90s, Papelbon also has a terrific splitter.

Byrd was scratched from his scheduled start Tuesday as a precaution because he suffered back spasms following his Aug. 11 start. However, a visit from the team chiropractor got him back on track. Byrd is 0-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two starts this month.

I like him too but he is a free agent after this year and depending on how much money he's looking for, they might need Papelbon to replace him in the rotation
