ok guys, a game Sox need after their late inning rally was ended in the 5th double play of the game.

Hendrickson squares off vs. Yankees

New York (65-53) at Tampa Bay (47-73), 7:15 p.m. ET

After beating the Yankees, 4-3, in 11 innings Tuesday, the Devil Rays will try to take the final game in the series at Tropicana Field on Wednesday at 7:15 p.m. ET.

The Rays won on a walk for the first time since 2000. It came on four pitches to Jonny Gomes after the Yankees' Scott Proctor loaded the bases. Eduardo Perez hit two home runs earlier in the night. He now has four career dingers against Yankees' left-hander Randy Johnson in just 25 at-bats.

Mark Hendrickson will start for the Devil Rays on Wednesday. The left-hander allowed 12 hits and four runs in his last outing on Aug. 12, but the Rays still managed to beat Cleveland, 8-6. Hendrickson has picked up wins in each of his last three starts, despite accumulating just five strikeouts over that span. Left-hander Al Leiter will start for the Yankees. He pitched five innings and gave up three earned runs on seven hits while striking out seven as the Yankees beat Texas, 6-5, on Aug. 12.

Pitching matchup

NYY: LHP Al Leiter

• 3-3, 4.80 ERA in 2005

1-0, 6.35 ERA vs. TB in 2005

TB: LHP Mark Hendrickson

• 7-7, 6.77 ERA in 2005

2-0, 3.60 ERA vs. NYY in 2005

Players to watch

Jorge Cantu and Damon Hollins both have gone deep against Leiter this season.

Quick hits

The Rays have won eight of 12 games against the Yankees this season. ... Alex Gonzalez had his second multi-error game of the season Tuesday. He had three errors against Boston on July 20. ... Tuesday's starter, Doug Waechter, was the first Devil Ray to pitch a complete game since Rob Bell on Oct. 1, 2004 ... Julio Lugo did not play Tuesday because of a sore left hand but is expected to return to the lineup Wednesday. ... The Rays improved to 2-67 when trailing after eight innings

I would be ecstatic if Leiter could give the BP a break.

''I think it's fun winning - bottom line,'' Perez said. ''We already know what it is to lose, and we were pretty good at it the first half of the season.

''Right now, we're learning how fun it is to win, and we're learning how to win in many ways.''

Winning against the Yankees, nothing beats that. <_ tb dropped against nyy last year.>

Torre soundbite:

''(Al's) very stubborn when it comes to throwing strikes. He just doesn't bite off a big enough piece of the plate,'' New York manager Joe Torre said. ''The one thing he has right now -- that he's always possessed -- is a lot of grit. He's not going to stop competing.''

1-0 bad guys....dont want to hear any yankee fans complaining about the umps because sheffroids got away with a strikeout

They could come up with a call far worse than that later that costs us the game. Can't let the umps off the hook because they gave us something borderline. It wasn't one of those blatantly obvious things.

it just doesnt look obvious to you because your a yankee fan

i guess the umps could be thrown off cuz of sheffs violent swing.

and thought it was kind of funny that a yankee fan reached over and caught that ball last night...hahaha

Nah, he was right on the plate it could've been argued either way more or less. A check swing isn't nearly as damaging as blowing a call at the plate (like how Tino was safe last night).

Yeah, I was pissed at that guy. Dumbass
