I really hope they still go after Huff, because as I've said before I really think the guy is going to be a star, but I don't want to give up Manny for him. Huff can play 1st, 3rd, OF, and he swings a pretty good stick. He would be very good pick up to replace Trot short term, and replace Millar long term.

YA look at huffs stats in 2003--

BA-.311 HR-34 RBI-107 47 2B 198 hits and 53 BB and played in all 162 games

he has a lot of potential and hes only 28 years old. i think hes slumping this year because he is sick of losing in TB

I am feeling really really reluctant about giving up any of our good pitching prospects right now. I don't know why, but I don't feel like we need to give up much this year. Other teams are basically holding the sox for ransom because we have some very specific needs (good hitting outfielder, relief pitcher, maybe Starting Pitcher). But in a few years we may be kicking ourselves for going out to get someone like Heilman, who, as far as I can tell, is a mediocre prospect at best, or Cameron who has had year after year to prove that he's a star and continually does not get to that level. We currently have a tremendous team, no need to make any huge changes.

Think about it this way: a year ago we were very close to trading Manny for Alex Rodriguez. Now, after he has become a WS MVP, spent a year of his contract value (something like 18 million), won a WS, and continued to put up HUGE numbers, we are talking on here (9 pages worth) about trading him for Huff, Cameron and Heilman. You've got to be kidding me. I don't think Theo could have ever been really consisdering this seriously.

Also, the dude who said that "the money is agreed upon its just the players that need to be ironed out" is missing the fact that the money would ALWAYS have to have been agreed upon in this deal. The Sox want to get rid of manny without paying ANY of his contract and I don't imagine they would sit down with any teams unless that were unnegotiable.

That's what happens to buyers every single deadline every single year. You get held over the coals, because the team you're trying to make the trade with knows that you need that player to make your run. No matter what team you are, and what players you're trying to trade for, if you're a buyer you're going to over pay at the trade deadline.

Last year's trade of Nomar to the cubs, involving the Twins and Expos was three buyers and a seller. There are good deals to be had.

I'm not feeling any desperate "need" to win this year. How about a grace period for doing it last year? I'm not suggesting we accept a s***** team, but those pitching prospects could make our rotation excellent in a couple of years. Look at the A's. They keep their young pitching prospects and seem to just keep reloading with good arms and making a run every year. We operate with a bigger budget, so we could take the same approach and supplement it with free-agent bats.

EDIT: I would, however, be in favor of trading one of those young arms for a similar type major league talent. Like AJ Burnett, who did this today: 7 IP, 4 H, 1 BB, 8 K

Agreed, although I do feel a desperate need to win this year. I want a dynasty, but I hope that this years team will be a down year compared to last year and (hopefully) compared to years to come.

I think a guarenteed way to grant success to our young pitchers is... having Manny and Ortiz in the middle of your lineup. You just can't replace those numbers. We're talking about the guy who has hit in the #3 spot in the ALL START TEAM the last few years for crying out loud. We can surround him with lots of Muellers, Nixon's, Tek's and Damon's, but those guys are much more available than Manny's. Even without making ANY trades right now we stand an excellent chance of winning again. Especially if Foulke is able to come back and pitch effectively. That would make a world of difference.

Bill Madden this afternoon on the NY Daily News is reporting the front office is actually divided on trading Manny. This is really starting to go bad, especially if the FO can't agree on this.

http://www.nydailynews.com/front/breaking_news/story/332894p-284491c.html

"The initial driving force behind the spirited discussions had been Red Sox CEO Larry Lucchino, who had been incensed by Manny Ramirez’s recent behavior, from refusing to play last week after Trot Nixon suffered an oblique strain because he needed a day off despite the shortage of outfielders, to his latest annual trade request. Lucchino’s willingness to part with Ramirez, the AL’s home run and RBI leader entering the weekend, who was booed at Fenway Park on Friday night during each plate appearance, had created a division within the Sox hierarchy. GM Theo Epstein and other front-office personnel were against trading Ramirez, realizing that would be the start of a need to retool the entire team."

You can have a dynasty without winning every year. You just have to dominate a decade or so and rack up a few championships. Trust me we aren't going to have to wait another 86 years for another WS, but we're not going to win every year.

Would the Braves be considered a dynasty? Some people have knocked Cox and Mazzone for not winning the postseason every year - 1/13 good enough?

And that's 13 consecutive division titles, working on number 14.

And Yankee fans want Torre's head despite 7 consecutive division titles. A word comes to mind.....

SPOILED!

Not for sure yet, but hopefully, I have to say i think the team has a better chance in the future if we aren't stuck with his massive contract.

Ortiz? and if the deal sends us Huff then he is a legitimate 3 hitter and cameron is no slouch either. He hit 30 home runs last year. The lineup will still be pretty potent.

Sorry to double post but, Huff may have had his struggles this year, but hes been having his struggles in the middle of the worst lineup in baseball, imagine him in the best lineup in baseball? He would have ample protection with ortiz behind him.

potent and way less expensive

Yes, and i think giving cameron some protection could boost his average to go with already good power numbers. He would definetly fit in here too, he plays a nice right field and can move to center when damon is gone probably next year. This deal makes a lot of sense.

Hes solid period, I want to hear somethign soon, Cameron is in the lineup in houston and huff is playing tonight as well so i don't know whats going on.

man mike cameron sucks... he's never hit over .275, never had more than 30 homers, and has never had over 110 RBIs... Manny AVERAGES over that a year... :harhar:

acording to jayson stark, manny is sitting out because the sox dont want manny to be distracted over all these trade talks. he also said that the devil rays are pretty much out of this trade and most likely going to send huff and baez to the white sox
