Stocker 323 Sorry about the bold tried to edit and correct but guess it didn't work. But there were three base running errors, killing at least one possibly two rallies. Sorry, just really pissed. I'll calm down in an hour or two. Love my Sox. Hate those Yanks !!!!!

This has always puzzled me too, especially since they got Johnny Damon, who has wings on his heels.

Any time and every time Damon is on first base, he should get more attention from the opposing pitcher than the guy at the plate does. Even if he's not going to run, he should be grimacing and doing a "I'm gonna run, watch out, boy, I'm gonna run" dance to drive the pitcher berserk.

Remember Kenny Lofton in the mid 90's?

I have no clue why Damon doesn't steal more... he has 10 stolen bases on the year and has only been caught once. You'd think we'd recognize that. And Renteria has stolen eight bags and has only been caught once. I know we are into the whole Moneyball thing, and taking the risk of making an out isn't supposed to be the way to go, but c'mon Terry.... choose to send 'em sometimes, not just on hit and runs.

Yeah I totally agree on the fact that they need to steal a lot more then they do. I think I have only seen one game this year where they have stolen a base (I am in Tallahassee, so I only get the games on ESPN and FOX). Damon and Renteria are easily capable of stealing bases. Renteria alone had 34 stolen bases in '03 and 17 last year as a Cardinal, so he is definitely able to steal a few. But I guess since Manny and Papi are driving in so many runs, they just decide to stick with the hit runs. I mean it is kind of hard to steal when you have to those two hitters after our only real stealing threats. Hopefully with that new Adam Stern kid they might steal a few more bases with him, but overall I do think there needs to be more stealing.

Well Moneyball does say steal so long as you have a success rate of 85% or some high numberlike that. Damon and Reneria have achieved that, but if they tried to steal more consistantly they probably wouldn't so I don't know if we should be stealing that often.

Also the only two guys that we have who could probably steal bases are Damon and Renteria, and we shouldn't be running into outs with Ortiz and Manny on deck and in the hole.

If Damon and Renteria had more stolen bases and were more of a threat to do so -- theoretically, wouldn't that lead to more fastballs to Ortiz and Manny?

I do agree on the fact tht they need to steal some bases more, tito should also think about hit and runs, with damon and renteria cuz damon will probably get on his first at bat and renteria makes good contact. So once renteria sends one threw the middle or hits it the other way damon could reach third or even score.

That's part of the idea. Even if they have no intention whatsoever of running, they should be rearing up like a greyhound on a lead just to keep the pitcher off balance.

sure, there have been missed opportunities but run support has definitely not been a problem for the sox this year

yea, there was that one game earlier this year, I believe against the Blue Jays where I recall two Sox being gunned down at home either in the same inning or consecutive innings. and the fact that both were out by a mile made it pretty brutal

Happened in Yankee stadium the night before we crushed them 17-1 the first time

First of all, lets not jump on Dale. A third base coach, especially in fenway, has one of the toughest jobs in MLB. I doubt anyone posting here can do a better job than he has done, although I'll admit he has made many errors. What Belli did the other day was completely his fault, and not Dale's.

The reason the Sox aren't trying to steal with Johnny and Rents is because there are so many bats in this lineup. Why take the chance of running out of innings, or taking runners off base, when you have a capable hitter at every spot in the lineup(except where bellhorn is batting)?

A stolen base should definitely have more importance than the Sox currently give it.

Without Dave Roberts' SB, the Sox would have been sweeped last year.

Yes. This pseudo-moneyball crap just doesn't work.

Welcome to the site, by the way.

The Redsox dont run the bases well because baserunning is not one of their main offensive objectives as much as I disagree with their approach at times. Baserunning has never been a priority for the redsox. There is a reason why damon doesnt run much no more. Same can be said of renterria. They dont believe in running into outs and believe that walks and slugging is a more efficient way of scoring runs. As far as smart baserunning, or lack of.....coaches SHOULD be blamed. Remember a few years back when Sveum claimed that Baldelli didnt have a very strong arm after the sox were nailed like 3 times in a series against the Drays? Then he doesnt send Millar on a basehit to Bernie in CF....I can only think of maybe one outfielder in all of baseball who has a weaker arm, which is Rondell White. I venture to say Damon has a better arm. I think maybe Sveum doesnt do his homework, because its inexcusable for him to not send Millar. Williams wasnt even trying to throw him out at home, and MIllar was held. Sveum shoulda been fired last year, and we are still paying for his mistkaes, he is now gunshy and alot of times hold runners up, or seems to be in between decisions instead of making a decision and sticking with it.

If it doesnt work, then why did the Redsox lead all of baseball, and break the 1927 NYY runs scored record last season? Why are they putting up runs at a staggering pace again? Obviously it does work, but the stupid baerunning blunders are costly.

Then why do the A's suck?
