Whew, looked quickly and thought they took out Ortiz for a moment. Unfortunately Nixon has been our hottest hitter lately.

He took your job stocker! :o

NY Yankees (47-41) at Boston (50-39), 1:20 pm EDT

BOSTON (Ticker) - After the Boston Red Sox trampled the back end of a depleted rotation, the New York Yankees hope that ace Randy Johnson can reverse the momentum Saturday when the long-time rivals continue their four-game series at Fenway Park.

With rookie Chien-Ming Wang joining fellow starters Carl Pavano , Jaret Wright and Kevin Brown on the disabled list, the Yankees were forced to turn to Tim Redding , who was acquired from San Diego on July 2.

The results were not good as Redding could not make it out of the second inning. Boston coasted to a 17-1 victory, avenging Thursday's 8-6 loss.

Trot Nixon hit a three-run inside-the-park homer and David Ortiz delivered a grand slam for the Red Sox , who defeated the Yankees by the same score May 28. Johnny Damon went 3-for-4 to extend his hitting streak to 27 games, the longest in the majors this season.

Boston figures to have a harder time against Johnson (9-6, 4.16 ERA), who has won his last two starts and four of his last five decisions. The five-time Cy Young Award winner allowed three runs and nine hits in six innings Sunday, striking out eight in a 9-4 victory over Cleveland.

Johnson has faced the Red Sox three times this season, going 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA.

Boston counters with All-Star Matt Clement (10-2, 3.85), who is starting for the first time in 10 days. The righthander allowed four runs and nine hits - including three home runs - in 8 2/3 innings of a 7-4 triumph over Texas on July 6.

Clement is 1-0 with a 1.74 ERA in two starts against the Yankees this season.

(Sorry, needed the head shots)

Consider this my obligatory cursing of day baseball. No one watches, and the game threads are significantly less fun here. :(

Yeah. Who watches day baseball?

This is the worst thing that could happen today. Have a huge advantage in fresh arms after last night and Clement can't throw strikes except for the fat part of plate.

Dumb McCarver statement #1 - The architects of the ballpark in 1912 had the wherewithal to put the bullpens far enough from homeplate so that the pitcher on the mound couldn't hear the pop of the ball in the bullpen.

Should someone point out to him that he bullpens were only put out there in right field when Williams joined the team?

Clement seemed to have a decent cutter early and then he just loses it. Put a pitching machine out there, at least it will throw strikes.

McCarver is a total idiot. Hearing the popping glove in the bullpen doesn't tell a pitcher he is doing poorly, it's watching all those runners cross homeplate right in front of him that tell him he's not doing well. I can't stand listening to these two.

Agreed. They try to dramatize everything.

He's probably still on a rush from using a word as tough as "wherewithal".

Hey, NDfromNY, have you ever heard of relief pitcher? I mean really, if you hear the popping in the bullpen, you know you will be taken out soon.

I didn't say anything about that... Mosox did. (read the thread before you start yelling)

I was agreeing with the fact that those two are annoying to listen to and sometimes really S T R E T C H to make a dramatic point.
