um edgar in the outfield??? that wouldnt be a smart idea at all, no offense, edagr is an infield type of guy really. besides with gabe kapler coming back possibly, i see adam stern being sent back to pawtucket. and if uanble to get damon back. it be kapler and stern next spring goin for the center field spot, with the latter getting the backup spot. trust you anything dude, edgar in center field is on nobodys minds for next spring. i like asam sterns speed very much so, his stolen base in his first career game was top notch. pitcher even had him in the corner of his eye and he took off, johnny damon speed, even before that he was able to beat out the double play. i got high hopes for this one

Edgar Renteria is a terrfic athelte, what makes you think he can't make the transation? No offense? Edgar Renteria hit .333 two years ago, and is hitting .280 right now. I wasn't saying he WILL be our CF next year, I was saying it MIGHT be a possiblity, because Renteria has said he'd change postions for Hanley so he'd be up in Boston.

We can't send Stern back, we'd have to offer him back to the Braves because Stern is a Rule V pick.

hey i never ripped dude on edgar's offense. quickly became a fan of his, he is a clutch hitter. all im saying i think he will only be playing spots in the infield at times. yes i know renterria said he would change positions, but the most likely as jerry remy had pointed out would be 2nd base---you got perplexed when i said no offense, as i would say to theo I dont like embree, no offense

Then you're saying Kevin Millar should be the bench coach? I'd be OK with that.

Either way, get his bat out of the lineup and stop giving the other teams outs for free, and get him out of the field and stop giving the other teams outs for free.

Great idea. Let's have a SS who has won three consecutive gold gloves learn to play CF so we can please some Double A prospect.

Wouldn't it make more sense for Hanley to learn a new position in the minors than for Edgar to change from a position where he's excelled at in the majors?

Uh, you might want to check your stats there about Renteria.

It wouldn't be to please Hanley Ramirez, this guy is a future star, and it would be easier to get him into the lineup as a SS. Renteria has said he'd change postions for Hanley.

Once again, I didn't say this was going to happen, this is just an idea to get our top prospect into the bigs smoothly.

I can see both sides here. First of all, the transition for a young kid like Hanley Ramirez would be much easier if he wasn't forced to make adjustments both at the plate, and in the field. I can easily see the merit of playing the kid at short because that's what he's familiar with. On the other hand, are you hurting the team in the long run replacing a sure handed shortstop with a player who's a bit erradic defensively, and putting your shortstop at a new position?

I say we cross that bridge when we come to it, because Hanley won't be ready to start for the big club in 06. He still hasn't figured out AA yet.

On the subject of Stern as an everyday man, right now the Red Sox aren't convinced that he'll hit enough to be qualified to play everyday. Obviously you won't know unless you give him a shot, but the Red Sox have been very reluctant of late to just hand over the everyday job to an inexperienced player... so I wouldn't count on that. I expect them to make every effort to retain Johnny Damon or another veteran before they resort to a Hanley Ramirez/Adam Stern option.

Can someone explain to me why you'd designate someone for assignment? Can't you just trade him whenever instead of giving yourself 10 days? Does it have to do with roster spots?

Yes, if you want that roster spot for someone else. Also, like the Boone situation, if you can't trade him, and have to relese him. It is the teams last chance to trade that player.

a few reasons. Payton got nasty in the clubhouse and got in a shouting match with the coaches, and also it gives them time to look for the right trade and not have him just sitting around, and they want to trade for chad bradford, and he is on the DL so it gives us 10 days to wait for him to come off.

I think in this case Payton forced the Red Sox hands. Apparently there was a blow up in the dugout between Payton and Francona over where Francona put Payton into the lineup as a defensive replacement. The trade has supposedly been in place for a while even before Wednesday, but it wont be made official until Bradford is off the DL. So designating Payton for assignment, the Sox made their side of the deal happen a few days earlier and were able to bring up Stern.
