Might as well put this thread out there....

I know a lot of rumors have hit about the potential of the Red Sox trading for Schmidt. First off, I like Schmidt and think he would fit in well (he has a little of that Red Sox look). I also think he's as good a pitcher as he's been the last couple years. He is ace caliber which would give us 2 aces when Schilling comes back. Put that together with Matt Clement, David Wells...and one of the other 3.....thats the best starting rotation in baseball.

On top of all this....we need help in the bullpen BUT this may be what we need. It sounds like the Sox really want to put Bronson back in the bullpen....love him as a starter but I bet he would be dynamite coming out of the bullpen. Next you could put Wake in the pen too and have Miller as your 5th starter.

Schilling

Schmidt

Clement

Wells

Miller

Foulke

Timlin

Arroyo

Wakefield (2.82 ERA vs. LHB)

Myers

Mantei

Embree

Halama

The Schmidt situation should be interesting to monitor, because there isn't a contender in baseball right now who wouldn't benefit by adding him to their rotation. Obviously, the rotation hasn't been much of an issue of late, which makes the acquisition of a guy like Schmidt seem pointless, but SchillingIsTheNatural brings up a good point-- that this would inadvertantly strengthen the bullpen because one starter (probably arroyo) would join the bullpen.

The issue with acquiring Schmidt would be the asking price. If San Fransisco puts Schmidt on the market officially, he should get a lot of phone calls, and that could drive up the price of talent. Plus, he's still got another year on his contract after 2005, meaning the Giants don't HAVE to trade him. I see this as getting out of hand very quickly, and I hope Theo doesn't mortgage the future on Jason Schmidt by giving up the team's best prospects.

I just think Steinbrenner likes to play with us, everytime there is a hot prospect out by the trade deadlines or at end of season, Boston goes to try to get them, but George takes out his checkbook and gives these guys a blank check. In the recent past its been A-Rod (glad we didnt get him tho), Carl Pavano, Randy Johnson, Beltran who later passed up both teams to go with the Mets though. I wont be surprised if someday soon see Schmidt or AJ Burnett signing a multi-year multi-million dollar contract with them. Yankees by now are desperate enough anyway. Just completed 75th game of the season, and just one game above 500. The Sox would be at 15 games above 500 if able to hold down Cleveland again

A rumor going around Chicago quickly that Schmidt will be dealt to the White Sox for Ryan Sweeney and some other top Sox Prospects. A Sporting News guy was on CLTV yesterday saying that it was going to happen. I'm not sure if it will happen or not. He did say that McCarthy was untouchable which was the guy that the Red Sox would've gotten in the failed A-Rod trade.

The CWS would be devastating to go up against if they acquired Schmidt. All they need to do is land another "ace" caliber/solid pitcher to only strengthen their incredible rotation. If they do land Schmidt, I have a feeling the CWS get a free ticket to the ALCS.

I actually got to watch Schmidt pitch and was not 100% impressed. Don't get me wrong though I think you add him with Garcia, Buehrle, Garland, and Hernandez.....well damn....congrats White Sox you put together a lethal rotation. I won't give you the ALCS though cause you will have tough pitching matchups with players and teams who have been there.

You and just about all the other scouts. From everything I've read, the Red Sox and Yankee scouts were both unimpressed by Jason Schmidt. Gammons was quoting "An AL Assistant GM" who said he was "good, not great" this season. That, coupled with the fact that the Giants will be asking for a ton of talent for him, makes it seem like he'll be pitching for San Fransisco in August.
