I was looking at stats today and realized that Nixon is doing good against leftys this year, and i was wondering why he is not starting more against them. look at this:

Nixon against Leftys.

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS

25 2 8 0 0 0 2 3 1 6 0 0 .320 .414 .320 .734

and against rightys he is hitting .290!

NOw payton:

Leftys,

AB R H 2B 3B HR RBI BB HBP SO SB CS BA OBP SLG OPS

55 11 15 3 0 2 9 5 0 6 0 0 .273 .328 .436 .764

SO if Payton wants a trade, deal him and get some stuff and let Trot start against leftys. Its not bad actually.

He's not getting extra-base hits and it's probably just some good luck for the time being. He really looks lost against lefties. Last time I saw him face one (Randy Keisler, I believe), he chased a first pitch curveball that bounced in the dirt and then sat on the next pitch, a curve, that hung right over the middle of the plate screaming to be hit. He just can't see the ball well against them at all.

It's not like he wants to be traded. He wants to play more. But Theo said the other day they won't be trading Payton. So I don't know what the deal is.

I still think he's going to be traded. The Sox like to grant players' wishes (see Dave Roberts), obviously everyone would love to have Roberts but he wanted to be traded and Theo obliged. I think the same thing will happen with Payton probably for a middle reliever. Especially since we have Stern or Ambres hoping to take Payton's spot.

We're not going to trade Payton. He's too valuable. What happens if one of our three OFers go down? Do we want Stern playing everyday out there? Actually, thinking about it... we could trade him. Millar could be a backup OFer is someone goes down and naturally Olerud could play first.

Good riddance Payton, I say. I guess $3.5 Million to fill in a few times a week on a playoff and potential World Series contender could be considered a rough life.

As for Nixon, I think he should be allowed to bat against lefties more. He can only get better, and he doesn't seem to be that bad of a hitter against them now. Zenny, you commented on an ugly at bat of his, but everyone has them. I've seen Manny look at pitches he could hammer onto the Pike as well as swing at pitches that Vlad Guerrero would lay off of. Plus, if Nixon stays hot, he will probably be confident enough to hit anybody, no matter which way they pitch.

For a time now Tito has shown no faith in Trot against lefthanded pitchers. I was not glad to see Payton pinch hit for Trot Friday night in an RBi situation. With the game on the line I'd rather have Trot at the plate against a lefty rather than Jay Payton.

Tito has shown no faith in Trotter versus LHP's because Grady Little showed no faith in Trotter versus LHP's because Jimy Williams showed no faith in Trotter versus LHP's. This all goes back to Jimy. If Trot hadn't been platooned in his early seasons ('98, '99, '00) and gotten more exposure, he would probably be much more competent now and wouldn't need to be platooned.

Still that's the classic "win now" versus "win later" train of thought. There was pressure to win then in pennant races, so he was platooned for the benefit of the team but not the benefit of the player. It's a tough situation to be in.

It's also a bit late for Trot at age 30 to finally develop that consistency. It has to be done in the minors and early in the major league career. He really does need to be platooned now.

I would not trade him for the sake of trading him. Sure he has asked that he'd like to start if that meant playing elsewhere. But you do not give up a terrific #4 outfielder for a bunch of crap just because he wants to go.

People wonder why lefties suck against lefties - its not because they can't do what righties do against righties... its because of that ******** myth that lefties can't hit lefties, and if ANY lefty struggles against lefties, they get sat down, and can't develop any skill at hitting lefties... so they continue to struggle, and continue to sit vs. lefties.

Its ******** - there is nothing different hitting a lefty if you bat left than hitting a righty if you hit right. Only difference is a struggle gets you sat if your left handed, and "he'll work it out" if your right.

I have ZERO doubt Trot could hit lefties just fine if he played against them regularly.
