Payton said when he was traded to the Sox from San Diego last December in the Dave Roberts deal, he was told he would have 350-400 at-bats because of assumed injuries to Ramirez and Nixon.

350-400! Who expected Manny and Trot to be out that long? That sounds like we just told Payton what he wanted to hear in order to get him.

Trade him for a bag of balls, who really cares. Just as long as someone else pays the remainder of the $3.5 million he's owed.

It would be nice to get out from under that contract, but didn't the Padres give us some cash in that deal as well?

How close is Adam Stern? I realize he won't be quite the player Payton is, but he's faster, and should have no problems being the 4th outfielder.

What other options do we have for outfielder #4? Folks who hate Bellhorn for his K's would probably try to assasinate George Lombard.

You're a hick.

Didn't know they made hicks from Boston.

I like Payton. He deserves better than being the 4th outfielder in any case.

Hate to rain on the Jay Payton love parade, but he hasn't earned diddily. He was a below average CF for the Padres last season and the only time that he's ever been good was with the aid of Coors Field. He's filling the role he's capable of. Again, sorry to rain on the lovefest, but that's my job.

Kapler is hitting terrible this season.

And Payton almost always does something good when he bats. Which is why I like him. I don't really care much about his past numbers.

In any case, trade him somewhere he can play. He's right, he's wasting away here and not living up to his potential obviously.

Joe Kennyde and preston wilson are on the market. Keep him till the deadline and then trade him and damon for both.

Are you insane? Why the hell would either teams do that deal??

Denver Post speculated this morning that the Rockies may be interested in re-acquiring Jay Payton. The article mentions that they would be willing to part with Dustan Mohr, while it doesn't mention if the Red Sox show any interest in Mohr, it says that Mohr chose Colorado over Boston in the offseason.

i really do like what jay payton brings to the table when he serves as backup, doin good so far this season with 4 homeruns and 19 runs batted in. I think Sox had signed him as a safety net in case what happened to trot only bein limited to 48 games last season. Maybe jay payton could be traded to another team for a new relief pitcher as alan embree's days in boston are lookin truely hazy, dont get me wrong i respect him wholeheartedly. in the beginnin in the season he was called upon every 2 or 3 games that go by, so far its been since the 10th of june that we lost to the cubs. in that last game he pitched in, gave up 5 hits and 3 earned runs

Even if payton stays with the sox and damon does indeed unfortuantely leave for another team, payton would still be used as a backup cuz he doesnt have the speed prowress that damon holds to himself. still holdin out hope damon signs a long term contract to stay with the sox, just best to not worry about it until end of 05 which will the decision will then come :dunno:

The Rockies may be willing to do a Payton for Dustan Mohr swap. I would love that trade. Mohr is a good player and would be a great platoon partner for Trot.

A few interesting rumors from Gammons' column today.

- Says Sox have inquired about Jason Schmidt but do not like what they have seen from him.

- Sox are going to try to oblige Payton's requests to trade him, says that the Sox have offered him to Atlanta but they have shown no interest

- Sox think Ambres might be able to fill the role of 4th OF, but he thinks that Gabe Kapler will return to the Red Sox this year

- Padres asked the Red Sox about the availibility of Mueller for bullpen help (not Akinori Otsuka) but Sox don't want to trade Mueller partly because of clubhouse intangibles

Thanks Stocker! You made my day right after that tough loss to the Pirates! I liked everything I heard except for the 4th, no way we give up mueller. I would like schmidt, even though he is already 32...I wouldn't be at all surprised if Kapler came back since he is having trouble baseball-wise in Japan....

anyone want to take a shot at what we would have to give up to get schmidt?

I mentioned Mueller to the Padres last week as something I made up. See, I don't pull everything out of my ass.

I know Kapler isn't the best player in the world; but he knows his role as a 4th outfielder off the bench and a clubhouse presence. Plus, I think the guy really enjoyed playing on a winning team in Boston. It would be great if Theo could trade Payton for a lefty arm out of the bullpen and plug Kapler back into his old 4th outfielder slot.

Kapler was deactivated by the giants...could we just trade kapler for payton? hahhahaa...then jay could play every day

Why the hell would you trade DAMON?

Its a stupid idea but im thinking he said that because of Damon's contract situation and fear that he will go to the yanks.

payton needs to suck it up. he gets a lot of playing time. he may not start but he gets a lot of time. i'd hate to see him go cuz he's one of my new faves but whats the sense of keepinmg him if he doesnt want to be here. and plus did he not know what his role would be before he signed on?

Agreed -- any time you agree to terms based on assumed injuries you're setting yourself up for a lack of playing time.

What was Payton expecting when he came to the Sox. It appeared obvious to everyone I know that he was going to do little different than Kaplar has done in recent years, and for 3.5 million, that seems like a pretty good deal. Come on man! You should be able to wait for a year; however, if it gets us a good reliever or helps get us a starter, then that's better than a disgruntled payton.
