Good stuff but here is the thing...you cannot compare Derek Jeter to Mark Bellhorn (please!). Was Bellhorn big for us in the playoffs..YES!. He came out of slump to help us win a few games with big HRs. I've focused on Kevin Millar and Alan Embree most of the year but will always remember Embree for his game 7 fist pump. I will remember Millar as Millar obviously. I loved the team last year and what they all did....however.....this is not the team from last year

Pedro, Roberts, Lowe, Meintkewicz, Reese, Leskanic, Cabrera, Embree...will all be remembered from that team along with the rest who are present....

There will be another hero, there will be more victories, the Boston Red Sox will move on with or without players and where Mark Bellhorn left off last season....someone new will crush one another day. I will still cheer for them and hope they come out of it and play well....im cheering for Pedro to win the Cy Young and if Arroyo was traded I would cheer for him to lead the Marlins or whoever.

I hope Bellhorn snaps out of it again but if he doesn't....how long can you wait before you need to move along??

You miss the point.

You may talk all the s*** about Bellhorn you want, but

Booing him is unacceptable. Considering possible alternatives to him that may improve the team on a message board is acceptable. Cheer for who you have on your team, but don't do it with blinders on.

No I didn't miss the point read closely...I said I'm cheering for him to come out of it....but you need to realize at some point Mark Bellhorn will leave Boston...you can't expect him to end his career here can you?? if you do you might be sadly disappointed.

People will "boo" players..always have and always will. That is the only way to voice your opinion to them. Some players look at it as a challenge. Derek Jeter got his share of "boos" as did Jason Giambi (he still deserves to get those "boos"). They came out of it just as I hope Mark Bellhorn will. Everyone was "booing" Keith Foulke and he was a monster in the playoffs. What are you going to do go around and tell everyone in Boston to be nice?? Dream on this is baseball. Don't live in the past as so many Yankee fans do....prepare for the moment and let the players know when its time to turn it on. It is time for Mark Bellhorn to turn it on. Thanks for everything you did Mark but if you plan to lead us again you need to get your act together and the longer it takes you the more people will let you know your time is running out.

I will always love the 2004 team but if you are not at your top this year....thanks and you will go down as a Boston legend for your heroics. That was Mark Bellhorn of 2004 and this is the Boston Red Sox of 2005....the fans are allowed to voice there opinion and will continue to do so.

Don't act like a bunch of babies "don't boo poor Mark"....he is a big boy and can take it....lets see if he can embrace it and how he responds to it

i was just reading the mailbag for Tom Caron on the NESN website, heres his thoughts on when Mark Bellhorn comes back:

I'm anxious to see how this plays out. You're right, Francona's track record shows that he is loyal to his players to the end. It was clear when he stayed with Kevin Millar on a nightly basis while John Olerud hit .405 in his first 24 games with the Red Sox.

My point was that Graffanino SHOULD be the nightly starting second baseman, and his play on both sides of the game back that up. He's been hitting better than .300 since coming to town, and turned in a couple of tremendous plays in the early innings Tuesday night against the Devil Rays. Bellhorn will be back in the next week or so... but I haven't seen any reason why Graffanino shouldn't be in there even after Bellhorn returns.

Riverside, this is beneath you. The Bellhorn situation has been discussed from every possible combinatiion. You must be bored. Then again it is an off day.

oh sorry i didnt realize I had to put my posts to be processed by you. "this is beneath you" what the f*** ever dude, I was just posting an email from a NESN announcer who is more in favor of Tony G getting the start even when Bellhorn is back

wow, so things are getting heated in the bellhorn thread...go figure.

anyway, I definitely agree. The sox timidity in the current trade situations is partly based on uncertainty of guys like Lowell and such. Tony G just jumped in and did his job. The whole bellhorn thing is a no brainer.

wow, this is still going on. bellhorn sucks and anyone is better. case closed.

to think someone in here actually blames his awful playing on the booing...unbelievable.

does that mean when a guy does well the fans can take credit for cheering him..

only in redsox nation..

if he cant play because hes getting booed :( than he shouldnt be playing on this team at all. Hes not a good everyday player, he never was and never will be

Ya know either way....Bellhorn and Tony G.....neither will be the determining factor of this teams success. I know we gotta talk about every player and the slumping ones but...

The 2005 Boston Red Sox will be determined by the abilities of Curt Schilling to take back his role as ace of the staff and Keith Foulke to get back to form as a dominate closer. The rest of the pieces will come together in some shape or form....but Foulke and Schilling are the major factors (unless players are added)...not Mark Bellhorn

well he did have the d-lowe syndrome, played as an all star in the October playoffs--but thats about it, lets see how it will turn out be in mid-August

Wow, how quickly we forget. Mark Bellhorn played like an allstar for a period of about 4 games (the last two in NY, then the first 2 in Boston) last October. This is the same guy who couldn't hit a damn thing against Anahim or while the Red Sox were losing early in the ALCS. So saying that he "Played as an all star in the October playoffs" is giving him a little too much credit.

I really like Mark Bellhorn, and even though a lot of folks have critisized him this year, I've been consistent in my assertion that he was not the team's biggest problem, and that they did not have a better solution. I was wrong about one thing: Tony Graffanino is a BETTER solution. He plays very well and is exactly the kind of solid ballplayer you want as your second baseman. Despite all the hype about how Bellhorn works counts and takes walks, Tony G gets on base more often, doesn't strike out nearly as much, and he is capable of working some deep counts. He's just as good as Bellhorn if not better defensively....

exactly, this pitching staff as is stands right now is far too much of a liability to go too deep in the playoffs

Schilling needs to come back to the rotation right now. I really don't like him coming into a game at the most hightened pressure situation where if he gives up a hit or a double, it gets magnified not only because it's potential tying runs for the other team, but because his name is Curt Schilling.

Schilling needs that opportunity to start a game, give up his single or double in the first inning when it means next to nothing and get into the groove of a game

and if indeed Miller is out because of his shoulder situation and Clement's status is by no means a certainty, we desperately need that rotation help

I don't think Schilling is ready yet. One or two innings isn't the same as 6 or 7.

By that logic he will never be able to come back, and will jsut be the closer untill next season. If we don't at least try it than he will be useless. He needs to be back in the rotation.

and this applies to bellhorn, how?

It doesn't, no one cares abot Bellhorn any more, he'll play one or two more games in a Sox uniform.

Posted
I think Tony G as well to start the rest of the season at 2nd base, and have bellhorn and cora as defensive replacements. The games that Wade Miller pitches should be the games Cora starts because for some reason he had played the best defense during Wade's shutout of the White Sox. Chris Snow of the Boston Globe had said that for a couple of weeks Tito will be starting Bellhorn and Tony on different days, basically a competition
Posted
I really want Tony G to be the starting 2B going into the playoffs, but there is an unwritten rule which may prevent him from starting when bellhorn gets back. You're not supposed to lose your job because of injury, no matter how well your replacement does. So I assume Tito is going to give Bellhorn every chance to keep the job.
Posted
He is going to let him earn his job back. If Bellhorn comes back and does what he did last year, he'll be able to keep his job. If he sucks as bad as he did last half, then little by little he'll get less playing time.
Posted
my gut feeling is that he will go wiith bellhorn, but tony g. is the better option...and why would he use bellhorn as a defensive replacement when tony g. and cora are both better defensively?
Posted

I would love to see Bellhorn get back to form....get that OBP back up there which would be very important to the #9 spot. You gotta see that at this point he can't hurt us. With a quality backup in Tony G....if things dont work out there is a backup plan unlike before.

If Bellhorn can get back to what he did then Tony G would still be of huge importance cause the guy can play almost every position in the infield. Every time a backup goes in for us we don't miss a beat.

This team didn't make any moves so they have faith in Foulke, Bellhorn, and Schilling to all get back to what they did before.

Posted
Obviously they have faith in those guys and rightly so since all 3 did tremendous things for the team, including in the post season. I also have faith that all 3 of them will get back to form. And Tony G is useful since he can play a whole lotta positions.
