I think it's a bit premature to use our prospects from a second baseman. Granted, his offensive stats are down from last year, but he did make significant contibutions to our WS win last year. I belive we have enough resources available to solve Bellhorn's defeciences ( call ups ). But what we really need is more pitching.

THe Bellhorn situation is alot different than the Millar situation. Millar can play 1B/OF, and if hes on the bench, hes a decent pinch hitting option. Bellhorn has zero versatility, I dont want to see him at SS for more than an emergency inning, and would be a terrible pinch hitting option, and doesnt run as well as stern. If they decide to bench him, they should just give him a pink slip out of town, he would be virtually useless.

Oh, I see. So those big hits he got in the postseason last year got us how many games in the standings this year?

Can't trade him , zero value. If you realease him we gotta eat his salary.

Because he had some playoff heroics doesnt mean he should be starting this season. If we had a better option Bellhorn would be gone, the point of the thread is to discuss whether or not we currently have a better option, and the importance of acquiring a better option. Regardless of what the rest of the lineup is doin it is a problem. Its the second biggest problem on the team.

Not thta many, yet.

That 'yet' suggests you think it's worth waiting for. I have some advice. Don't hold your breath, lest you end up taking a dirt-nap.

Are you somehow implying that Millar is somehow use-FULL? I'm sorry, but Kevin Millar playing the outfield scares the s*** out of me. As if his bad defense at first wasn't bad enough, it's 10X worse in the outfield.

I don't consider Millar in the outfield a viable option.

He's not but if he were benched he could have some use as a pinch hitter. Example Trot Nixion against a tough lefty reliever like B.J Ryan, pinch hit Millar, if he gets on pinch run Stern and let him play the outfield.

I guess he's slightly more useful than Bellhorn off the bench.... but thinking about Millar off the bench makes me miss Gabe Kapler. Aah, Gabe....

Didn't someone say he'd be available on the 15th? Today's the 15th.... Theo, get on it. DFA fatass Millar and get Gabe a uniform.

Exactly, I should have been more clear. Millar is a better option off the bench than Mark Bellhorn. That is what I was trying to elaborate on. He is scary in the OF, BUT he can do it on a rare basis, and would be a good RH bat off the bench. Assuming we acquire someone to play second base Alex Cora who isnt good enough to replace Bellhorn as the starting second baseman all of a sudden becomes MUCH more valuable than bellhorn on the bench. Bellhorn becomes the odd man out, Cora can play both Middle infield positions, runs better, defends better, and is a better sacrifice bunter.

Please god don't tell me you expect Gabe to play first base. We have no one but Olerude, and he can't play every day, as sad as it is, we need Millar to play first.

Why does everyone expect Gabe to come here and light it up like he is some savior? What can he provide that Payton didnt? Must I bring up he hit .153 and was released from a Japanese team? Dont understand where the fascination is. He is a good backup OF yes, but its not like hes a sparkplug offensively.

Sizzlin. You are very correct btw. Unless they decide Petagine is deserving of innings at the big league level (I think he is, hes tearing the crap outta the ball and putting up big .OPS numbers in Pawtucket) Millar has to stay on the team, I would not be oppsed to him spending more time on the bench, however we do need Kevin Millar, and Millar hasnt been nearly as bad as bellhorn.

Id rather watch millar line balls into the stands than watch bellhorn buckle at curveballs.

Good news, according to WEEI, Gabe is in Ft. Myers working out. He will probably be signed to a minor league deal.

Yep, I got my question answered again.

Mark Bellhorn: Will I still be the starting 2nd basemen for the Red Sox in August?

Jerry Crasnick: (12:36 PM ET ) Mark,

Geez, you're really getting hammered in Boston (although I think the bullpen is a much bigger problem than second base). Alex Cora is an option, but his numbers this year are worse than yours. Calling up Dustin Pedroia from Triple A is another alternative. The Yankees brought up Robinson Cano, and it's worked out pretty well for them.

I still think Ortiz can play 1st base....he really isnt as bad as some believe

You can't compare the numbers in Japan to what he could do in the states. In Japan the fastball is virtually non existant, they focus on quick moving breaking balls all day long, reports were that Gabe just couldn't adjust. No one's expecting him to come out and hit .340 but he would be a help.

Everybody thinks Ortiz has a good glove because he had a few good games in interleague Ortiz is the last person we want playing first.

Isn't this exactly what I said in another thread (or perhaps this one a few pages ago?)

No, of course I don't expect Kapler to play first, but I strongly believe that between Olerud, Youkilis, and Ortiz we can have first base covered.

Why is everyone so hard on Ortiz defensively? Sure, we haven't seen him play there a lot, but if Mo Vaughn can do it, why can't David?

Posted
That's the problem Mo couldn't do knees totally shot ( Mets - the place were former Sox go to die are still paying ). David with bad knee and weight would be on DL in a very short time .

whats the difference???? i saw him make some nice catches and isn't that what counts?? how about the throw in the World Series last year to get Suppan out.....David Ortiz is the f***en man and can do the job....he would just be a backup and I dont know where all this crap came from about Olerud....we only have half a season left...i think he can play for half a season

He wouldn't have to play every day. We'd have Youk and Olerud to share the defensive duties and save Ortiz' body.

Ortiz at first base would be a train wreck. What if he got hurt playing in the field. Its unnecessary to have him playing 1B considering we have other decent alternatives.

Who do you consider a 'decent alternative?' Please don't say Kevin Millar.
