So what does everybody think of Schilling's return? I think he's done just fine. That first game against the Yankees he had was ugly in terms of his numbers, but he looked like he had everything down. Today against Toronto, he looked excellent. Even though his pitch count went up early, he could have had some more help from his defense *cough MANNY cough*...but whatever, it's fine. You have to give the Jays some credit...they battled off some sick pitches from Schilldawg...including some nice split-fingered fastballs that they fouled off. But from how he looked today, I would expect him to make one hell of an impact in his next outing.

Anybody else wanna share their thoughts?

Toronto worked the counts well today and got his pitch count up. Manny's D in left and that foul ball Bill Mueller dropped helped up it too. Luckily we smashed the ball today and the game was never really in question.

Curt will be fine though hes a beast. He had 10 Ks in 5 innings. Thats great and I cant wait for his next start. Hopefully we're working on a 10 game streak by then.

You know, for someone coming off experimental ankle surgery and not really getting his training in this spring, Schilling is looking mighty fine. More than his actual performance, I am impressed by the amount of thought that goes into each one of his pitches. When his brow furrows prior to the wind up you can tell he's deep in thought in the midst of the chaos of the ballgame. Makes me feel there is hope for the world yet.

What always surprises me is how hard it is for players to come back from the offseason and return to their true form. I went to spring training about 5 years ago and saw what players look right after they arrive - not a pretty site.

I'm thinking Schilling has not hit his stride yet - this is going to be a good summer.

118 pitches in his second start is worrisome, but if that simply comes from being a strikeout pitcher and trying to make the exact pitch in each situation. At this point with any other guy, I'd say it was too much too soon in an April game that was in the bag... but I trust in Schill. In his next start, 6-7 IP and 4 runs would still be all right with me. He doesn't have to be perfect right away, he just has to stay healthy.

Let's not forget that he struck out 10 through 5 in his second start of the season. 2 of his runs were unearned, due to the bad combination of the sun and Manny Ramirez. Without that prolonged inning, he could have gone 6 with the same pitch count.

Techsoldaten made a good point in mentioning that Schill had next to no spring. I'm certainly not freaking out about Schilling, especially not after having attended both of his first two starts (I just need to keep rubbing that in :D). StrassRI's prediction is probably right, provided Schill can keep his pitch count lower than he has been.

If anyone saw the press conference directly after the game, Schill said he's still working on the kinks. The only positive thing he felt out of this start was the win. He doesn't know why his fastball was moving between 87 and 94, but he's working on it. He also said that his next start should be much more sharp.

yea I noticed that too... the velocity of his fastball was reallllllyyyy off that worries me since he's a power pitcher and he aint becoming a Maddux anytime soon.
