Depth

One of my biggest concerns about the 2005 Red Soz is depth. Last year we had incredible depth with guys like Reese, Kapler, Mientkievich (or however you spell it), Roberts, And that SS we got from the Guardians or something i forgot his name. Anyway, we lost most of those guys, and while it may not seem like a bid deal, you cant deny those guys contributions to the team last year. And I know we added Jay Payton who is phenominal but i just wanted to see what you guys think about this

I'm not too concerned...the Sox are building up for the future with bringing in some younger guys. We have the stuff to compete this year, but what you'll see over the next few years with the Yankees is that you can't just go out and buy older guys and expect to win. The Red Sox management is thinking about the long run with these guys, but as far as the present goes, the talent we have brought in is very good and will hopefully lead us back to the World Series.

Roberto Petagine and Dave McCarty = Doug Mientkiewicz

Adam Stern = Dave Roberts

Roberto Pertagine? Ive never heard of the guy and also there is no way in hell he is as good of a defensive 1st baseben as Mientkievitch... no way in hell!

 

and adam stern? again another guy I havent heard of (And ive been to every spring training game, and Ive heard of none of those guys (well odviously ive heard of Payton but the other 2))

If you have never heard of them, then you don't really know if they're worse than our other players.

Ok thats a good point, my only counter is, if they are good, why arent they getting much playing time this spring?

Petagine and Stern are both hurt. I know Petagine had knee surgery I believe. I'll have to look up what Stern has.

 

EDIT: Stern has a broken thumb.

Youk is also a very good stick of the bench, McCarty plays defense almost as well as Mientkiewitz, and Petagine could be a huge steal.

 

Stern however isn't equal to Roberts, Roberts is a much much smarter basestealer then Stern is.
