Someone wrote to the Red Sox mailbag asking whether or not they will retire Wade Boggs' number 26. The writer said the Red Sox would give it some thought, but why would they need to think about it? I can't see why they wouldnt if he met the criteria (10 yrs. , Hall Of Fame). Does anyone know why he would not get his number retired?

The Red Sox have a criteria, I think, that a retired player has to have played his entire career in Boston. This is due to change in some years time because of the changing face of the game, but for now the rule still stands. They made an exception for Carlton Fisk because he was such an iconic Boston athelete. I don't think you can make the same exception for Boggs, especially because he played for the Yankees.

I think finishing your career with the Sox is another criteria that the website forgot. Isn't the reason why Fisk got his number retired because he came back to a front office position? I'm not positive, but that's word on the street.

It's true.

Here's something from the Sox website by Ian Browne:

Wade Boggs now has the credentials to have his number retired (election to the Hall of Fame and a decade with the Red Sox). Are there any plans to retire No. 26? -- Kellen M., Woonsocket, R.I.

I'm sure the Red Sox will give it some thought. And I would expect there to be a Wade Boggs Night at Fenway Park in 2005, just as Dennis Eckersley had one during his Hall of Fame season. At this point, I haven't heard any talk about the Red Sox retiring his number, but you never know if that might change.

i think that if they loosened the criteria for the retired numbers then it would take away from the honor of having your number retired.. it would make it more common

He went to the yankees and then wanted to go in as a Devil Ray because he was taking money. I don't think the Sox love him and don't need to retire his number.
